#OpSafeWinter: Generosity Goes Viral

Inspired by the real-world experience and skill sets developed on the ground during Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Sandy, folks involved in these two previous relief missions came together to address another problem threatening more and more people during the economic crisis: homelessness. An #OpSafeWinternyc contact describes mutual aid as a two-way street. Not only do the homeless and hungry receive relief in the form of coats and food, but those doing the relief are developing contacts and getting the chance to use their skills. Everyone gets an expanded sense of what's possible by learning to interact with their neighbors, homeless or not, in an informal setting.

UN: International Year Of Solidarity With Palestinian People

Three initial observations: those governments that are willing to stand unabashedly with Israel in opposition to the tide of world public opinion are increasingly isolated, and these governments are under mounting public pressure from their own civil societies that seeks a balanced approach that is rights-based rather than power-dominated; the West, in general, is dominated by the abstaining governments that seek the lowest possible profile of being seen as neither for or against, all in countries where civil society should now be capable of mobilizing more support for the Palestinian struggle; and the non-West is, as has long been the case, rhetorically in solidarity with the Palestinian people, but have yet to match their words with deeds, and seem ready to be pushed.

US Border Patrol A Police State, US Deaths In Custody

"The problem is that obviously, there is a real lack of transparency and accountability within" the Border Patrol, the San Diego ACLU's border litigation attorney Mitra Ebadolahi said. Ebadolahi told Al Jazeera that since 2005, 42 people have died while in Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection custody — according to an investigation by the Arizona Republic — "none of which have led to a transparent investigation by the government." Of those who died, 13 were American nationals like Keith. Christian Ramirez, human rights director of civil liberties group Alliance San Diego told Al Jazeera that because people aren't allowed to use cell phones or take flash photography at many border crossing checkpoints, it's difficult to document alleged abuses.

How LI Food Not Bombs Alleviates Hunger

One by one, cars pull through the Hempstead train station parking lot in a massive caravan of free food; and one by one, our volunteers unload their contents and bring their donations to the appropriate distribution sections. It’s really an unbelievable site, seeing dozens of people moving back and forth with boxes of tomatoes or bags of pies dropping them off at the produce section or the bakery section and coming right back for more. Together we unloaded as quick as we could, but it still took us roughly 25 minutes to unload the 33 filled vehicles we had for the day. By the time the last box came out of the last car we had over 176 boxes of produce piled taller than the height of most of our volunteers; over 2,568 loaves of bread in our bakery section; over 27 garbage bags filled with bouquets ready to be given out in the back of our crowd; and so much more! At this point, our volunteers were just about ready to start, and the crowd coming for groceries had swelled to a little more than 500 people.

2013 Resistance Report Year In Review

What an amazing year for the movement of movements that continues to develop here in the United States and around the world, and what an amazing first season of The Resistance Report. In this week’s special expanded episode, we take a look back at some of the most amazing stories of the year. In addition to coverage of Edward Snowden, the Acronym TV 2013 Person of the Year, we also remember 2013 as a time when people took power and reversed what seemed like the inevitable march to war with Syria. In 2013, The Resistance Report served as an antidote to the hear-no-evil see no evil attitude of mainstream media outlets here in the United States about the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima nuclear facility in Japan. In the attempt mitigate future catastrophic damage; the global community is faced with challenges unique in the history of humankind. While The Resistance Report launched this year on July 29, 2013, and so our review of Resistance Reports is but a half year old, but there is still enough Manning, Snowden, Greenwald, Keystone X-L protests, Stop the TPP Protests, Dream Defenders, Fast Food Strikers, Hunger Strikers, and neo-liberal shenanigans to jam pack this 60 minute year in review.

We Will Not Be Silent: Over 100 Messages To Financial District

[NEW YORK, NY] For three days this December (12/19, 12/23, 12/31), creative and concerned people in New York City will carry over one hundred unique messages on large, hand-held black and white placards to Wall Street. The activists, members of the arts and activism collective We Will Not Be Silent, will create a visual arresting presence from 9am to 5pm each day, organizing a People’s Picket at significant locations and handing out to the public a series of 20 different postcards containing facts, statements and poetry to provoke thought and conversation about the socio-economic impacts of Wall Street.

Why Won’t West Call Out Saudi Persecution Of Democratic Activists?

Saeed is a member of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (Acpra), an organization documenting human rights abuses and calling for democratic reform. He is its fourth member to be sentenced to prison this year. In March, co-founders Mohammad Fahad al-Qahtani (who I have met in the past, and previously wrote about) and Abdullah al-Hamid were sentenced to prison terms of 10 and 5 years on charges such as "breaking allegiance with the ruler" and running an unlicensed political organization – despite repeated attempts to obtain a license. Not surprisingly, there has been no strong public statement from the Obama administration regarding Saeed's sentencing. Following the conviction and sentencing of Qahtani and Hamid, the strongest language came from the obscure United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. It took a direct question at a press briefing to prompt a canned statement from the State department, claiming "concern" at the arrests and sentences, and asserting that the US makes "strong representations for human rights activists" wherever our diplomats are.

Guantanamo Inmate Shaker Aamer Holds Hope For Release And Healing

Detained without charge since November 2001, Saudi-born Aamer, 45, is the last British citizen to be held at Guantanamo. He is described by his lawyers at Reprieve, a London-based legal action charity, as a “natural leader who is known for his concern for others.” He has spent most of his time in solitary confinement, despite being cleared for release by both President Obama and President Bush and despite U.S. authorities now accepting that there is no case against him. According to documents published in the Guantanamo Bay files leak, the U.S. military Joint Task Force on Guantanamo believed in November 2007 that Aamer had led a unit of fighters in Afghanistan, where he was captured in 2001. However, he has never been charged with any wrongdoing or gone to trial.

Support Movement Analysis: Real Democracy Requires Independent Media

We often use the Popular Resistance website to raise money for organizations, campaigns, artists and art collectives and others who are working in the resistance movement. In the article below we are urging support for ROAR Magazine. One of the critical fronts of struggle for developing a mass movement that can challenge the current power structure is media. Independent media, citizens media and social networks are keys to challenging the corporate mass media. Understanding our movement and constantly evaluating where we are going and how we get there are essential. ROAR is consistently strong in its analysis of the resistance movement around the world. They have excellent writers who put forward analysis you do not read anywhere else. We urge you to support their fundraising campaign on indiegogo.

Study: In Recent Years, World Shaken By Protests

In recent years the world has been shaken by protests. From the Arab Spring to the “Indignados” (outraged), from Occupy to food riots. There have been periods in history when large numbers of people rebelled about the way things were, demanding change, such as in 1848, 1917 or 1968; today we are experiencing another period of rising outrage and discontent, and some of the largest protests in world history. Our analysis of 843 protest events reflects a steady increase in the overall number of protests every year, from 2006 (59 protests) to mid-2013 (112 protests events in only half a year). Following the onset of the global financial and economic crisis began to unfold, there is a major increase in protests beginning 2010 with the adoption of austerity measures in all world regions.

The 8 Stages Of Successful Social-Political Movements

Long-time political activist and social change agent Bill Moyer, who developed the Movement Action Plan Model of how successful progressive movements evolve makes his last public presentation in this video six weeks before he died at the age of 69. Moyer worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference on poverty campaigns, and also worked to stop the Vietnam War and nuclear energy, worked with the American Indian Movement, as well as on housing and disarmament, among other causes over his 40 year career in social movements. In this last public presentation he summarized the insights of a lifetime of experience about how social movements grow and succeed, as well as his vision of a new culture emerging through the cracks of a declining empire. Moyer’s work is heartening for social justice activists because it shows how movements grow, recede and change their functions at different stages and that this is a natural process. By knowing the stage of development we can better define the work that is needed to achieve success; and predict how the power structure and public will react to our actions.

Merry Crisis And A Happy New Fear

When Charles Dickens waxed poetic about death, greed and misery in his classic Christmas Carol, he very much had in mind the societal dislocation wrought by early industrial capitalism. Of course the Dickensian critique of capitalism lacked a thorough political economic analysis and ultimately failed to move beyond moral outrage at poverty and the decline of human virtue. But, that said, even Karl Marx opined that Dickens in his lifetime “issued to the world more political and social truths than have been uttered by all the professional politicians, publicists and moralists put together.” A Christmas Carol was published in 1843, just five years before The Communist Manifesto and the revolutionary wave of 1848. If we were to write A Christmas Carol for our time, would the story really look so different? The character of Scrooge still seems omnipresent — from wealthy Wall Street investors who haven’t paid a penny for the financial mess they created in the lead-up to the current crisis, to the power-hungry politicians who literally surround themselves with gold while announcing an Age of Austerity for everyone else.

The Health Of Our Earth Is Waning

As keepers of knowledge of the original intent, the Native indigenous peoples are gravely concerned with the health of our Earth Mother. Mankind with his exploitative technology is giving her great disrespect and great hurt, physical and otherwise. These unfortunate realities that we live with are the reasons why the environmentalists, the grassroot advocates/activists do and say as we do. We want to live, we want our Earth to be healthy, we are in favor of a continuum of life on this Earth. After all we have children, grandchildren and expect that there will be generations to come after we are gone. We demand that there be a serious and deliberate change to slow down and hopefully avert these inevitabilities. It is our great dilemma that as Native Nations rich in natural resources, we participate in the exploiting of those resources for jobs and revenues. By our participation and allowing the unchecked exploitation of our lands, resources and people, we are willing contributors to this unfortunate condition of our world.

Snowden Ally Says Berlin Apartment Subject To Raids

Applebaum described strange scenarios which have been haunting him. “When I flew away for an appointment, I installed four alarm systems in my apartment,” Appelbaum said. “When I returned, three of them had been turned off. The fourth, however, had registered that somebody was in my flat - although I'm the only one with a key. Some of my effects - the positions of which I carefully note - were indeed askew. My computers had been turned on and off,” he added. “The monitoring pressure has ultimately destroyed my relationship with my girlfriend,” he mourned. The internet activist, journalist and cybersecurity specialist is a core member of the Tor encrypted network and has well-documented ties to WikiLeaks. Appelbaum believes that the intention behind the incidents is to make him feel uncomfortable - so that he knows they “care” about him “while leaving no possible evidence.” He reiterated his commitment to internet freedoms and the right to privacy. “It's about protecting our core values against a totalitarian surveillance state - whether in analogue or in the digital world,” he said.

Pollution-weary Students Stage A March To Protest Incinerator

The protesters were going to walk to the site – a former chemical plant less than a mile from their school – where Energy Answers wants to build the 160-megawatt trash-to-energy Fairfield Renewable Energy Power Plant. “Let’s show Energy Answers, the governor and everyone else that we’re not going to take it,” Watford said. “Let’s show them that Curtis Bay is not a dumping ground.” English teacher Kelly Klinefelter Lee also addressed the gathering of about 200 people in the school auditorium, saying she was proud of the students. “There is much to object to. . . mercury and lead and greenhouse gasses,” she said. “These students already breath some of the dirtiest air in the state and their young bodies bear a terrible price.”
