US Imperialism

Mass Mobilizations Needed To Protect Bolivian And Venezuelan Revolutions

On August 17, in the Bolivian presidential elections, the leftwing candidates lost for the first time in twenty years. Some are calling this a continuation of the US-backed coup there. Just days before the election, the Trump administration announced that it was sending naval destroyers and 4,000 troops to Latin America that could be used in 'targeted strikes' against Venezuela. Clearing the FOG speaks with William Camacaro, a senior analyst for the Council on Hemospheric Affairs and a co-founder of the Venezuela Solidarity Network, about divisions within the left in Bolivia that led to their current demise and how Venezuela is mobilizing millions of civilians to defend their sovereignty against US aggression.

The Cartel Of The Suns: Leftovers That Were Never Edible

The US narratives about the Cartel of the Suns and the alleged connection of President Nicolás Maduro with drug trafficking are nothing more than a reheated dish that was never edible, not even when it was first cooked. However, the poor quality of this stew does not make it any less dangerous. The imperial power has used even more rotten pots as excuses to invade countries, bomb cities, and exterminate entire pueblos. In fact, just days after US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the doubling of the reward Washington is offering for Maduro’s capture, military forces were deployed in the Caribbean under the pretext of repressing drug trafficking by “Latin American cartels.” The Venezuelan government and the Bolivarian National Armed Force (FANB), with their long experience confronting all kinds of aggressions—military, paramilitary, mercenary—from abroad, have remained on high alert.

Is Venezuela The Next Target Of The US Empire?

President Donald Trump has deployed several warships and thousands of Marines to the southern Caribbean – just miles off the coast of Venezuela. The provocative mission was launched under the guise of an anti-narcotics crusade, but risks disastrous outcomes for both countries. While a war with Venezuela might seem unlikely, the move is sure to radically escalate tensions with the Latin American state, and in the worst-case scenario could become a trip-wire for direct conflict with Caracas. According to a recent New York Times report, the president has signed a secret directive authorizing military action against drug cartels designated as “terrorist” groups, having added several drug gangs to the terror blacklist since February. The new operation in the Caribbean is almost certainly based on that order.

When The Empire Chokes, The South Breathes

The story they sell is that “order” was built by reasoned men in sensible suits. The story we live is different. Multipolarity did not grow out of seminars or summits; it is the aftershock of five centuries of plunder, the recoil from wars and sanctions, and the refusal of the colonized to keep paying for someone else’s civilization. Its genealogy runs from the Bandung Communiqué (1955)—the first great gathering where the majority of humanity spoke in its own name—through the long detour of debt, structural adjustment, and counter-insurgency masquerading as “development.” Bandung’s promise was simple and subversive: sovereignty, peaceful coexistence, cooperation, and a say in the world economy for those who actually make the world economy run.

Venezuela Mobilizes 4.5 Million Militia Members As US Deploys Troops

President Nicolás Maduro announced on Monday, August 18, that he is activating “over 4.5 million militia members across the entire national territory” of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in response to the US deployment of three Navy guided-missile destroyers and 4,000 military personnel to the Caribbean. The White House has described the deployment as an anti-drug trafficking operation in the region, while some analysts have called it a new threat against Venezuela – the country with the largest oil reserves in the world. The US military deployment comes after Washington raised its bounty on the Venezuelan president from USD 25 million to USD 50 million, alleging links to drug cartels.

Declassified: CIA’s Covert Ukraine Invasion Plan

On August 7th, US polling giant Gallup published the remarkable results of a survey of Ukrainians. Public support for Kiev “fighting until victory” has plummeted to a record low “across all segments” of the population, “regardless of region or demographic group.” In a “nearly complete reversal from public opinion in 2022,” 69% of citizens “favor a negotiated end to the war as soon as possible.” Just 24% wish to keep fighting. However, vanishingly few believe the proxy war will end anytime soon. The reasons for Ukrainian pessimism on this point are unstated, but an obvious explanation is the intransigence of President Volodymyr Zelensky, encouraged by his overseas backers – Britain in particular.

Washington Prepares For Troop Withdrawal From Baghdad

The US army is preparing to start withdrawing troops from several sites in Iraq, including in the capital Baghdad, and will relocate them to the northern city of Erbil in the country’s autonomous Kurdistan region, according to Al-Sumeriya. An Iraqi government source told the outlet on 17 August that "the international coalition will withdraw from Ain al-Assad base, Baghdad airport, and the Joint Operations Command toward the city of Erbil." The source added that "the withdrawal of coalition forces will take place in September, in implementation of the agreement between Baghdad and Washington," noting that "the military trainers will remain in the country and have nothing to do with the withdrawal of international coalition forces."

Mercenary Boss Erik Prince’s Private Army Moves Into Haiti

In the coming weeks, hundreds of militants from the US, Europe, and El Salvador are expected to be deployed to Haiti to allegedly confront the country’s gangs as part of a mission overseen by Erik Prince, the controversial founder of the mercenary organization Blackwater and a known supporter of US President Donald Trump. According to Reuters, Erik Prince’s new security firm, Vectus Global, which has been operating in Haiti since March amid escalating violence in the country, is gearing up to expand its operations in an alleged effort to assist local authorities in reclaiming critical roads and territories from heavily armed criminal groups that have long held control over them.

Peruvian People Reject Neocolonial Boluarte Coup Regime

On July 28th, Perú celebrated its 204th anniversary of the independence of Peru from Spanish colonial rule. Inside Congress, the most unpopular president in the world, Dina Boluarte, gave a five-hour-long speech in which she claimed, among other things, to launch an array of infrastructural projects to boost the economy.  The scenes outside were a vastly different world. Protestors, delegations of farmworkers and families of martyrs and victims from the south, organizations representing neighborhood unions and others gathered in the center of the city to hear the message of ousted President Pedro Castillo, from the Penal Barbadillo prison, where he is a political prisoner held under pre-trial detention since December 7, 2022.

Trump Is Sending Thousands Of Troops To Latin America

The Department of Defense has ordered the deployment of air and naval forces to the southern Caribbean Sea. On August 15, CNN reported that Trump is deploying 4,000 U.S. sailors and Marines to Latin America, and that various military assets are being allocated to the U.S. Southern Command including a nuclear-powered attack submarine, several destroyers, and a guided missile cruiser.  This operation comes after Donald Trump secretly signed an order last week directing the Pentagon to use the armed forces in the supposed “fight against drug cartels” in countries where groups declared “terrorist” exist, such as in Mexico, Haiti, El Salvador, and Venezuela. The operation was confirmed by Secretary of State and National Security Advisor, Marco Rubio.

What Lies Behind Trump’s Attacks Against Venezuela?

As if President Trump intended to meet professional US mercenary Erik Prince half way, US Attorney General Pam Bondi increased the existing US bounty on President Nicolas Maduro — originally set at $15 million — from $25m to $50m for anyone providing “information leading to his arrest or conviction.” In late 2024, Prince, a professional mercenary, alongside Venezuela’s far right, promoted a plan to deploy a private army to Venezuela. He suggested that if the US raised the bounty on Maduro’s head to $100 million, targeting not only the president but also Diosdado Cabello and the entire government, they could “just sit back and wait for the magic to happen.” Prince and Venezuela’s far right even launched a crowdfunding campaign, Ya Casi Venezuela (“Almost There, Venezuela”), to collect the $100 million.

Will The United States Invade Mexico?

Donald Trump is proving time and again to foreign leaders that counting on friendly relations is senseless. Most recently, India, Canada, Ukraine, and Brazil discovered that, contrary to expectations, Trump is not influenced by historical ties or long-term common interests. He will treat them like adversaries if there is immediate advantage to doing so. Now Mexico joins the list. Trump has long had the idea of pursuing drug dealers into Mexico. The New York Times reports that he has signed a secret directive to the Pentagon that could lead to the dispatch of US air and ground forces into Mexico, or other countries, on the pretext of fighting terrorism, a designation the State Department began using once Trump took office.

Tariff Pressure Under Trump: A New Economic Colonialism

The current US administration is determined to abandon multilateral frameworks, favoring instead the resolution of trade disputes through bilateral negotiations, one by one, in pursuit of maximizing US interests. It has openly declared its intention to replace multilateral agreements with bilateral pressure, believing that the US holds stronger leverage in one-on-one negotiations. Under this approach, the US unilaterally launched a global tariff war on what it called “Liberation Day”, using threats of high tariffs as a bargaining chip to force its trade partners into submission. This strategy led to a series of bilateral trade agreements, in which individual economies – including the United Kingdom, Japan, and the European Union – were pressured into making compromises and concessions to the US.

Iran Security Chief In Baghdad For Talks On ‘Next Phase’ Of Resistance Axis

The Secretary-General of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, arrived in Baghdad for two days of meetings with Iraqi officials regarding the future of the Axis of Resistance and the political stability of Iraq and the region, Shafaq News Agency reported on 11 August. An informed source told Shafaq that, “Gathering the so-called Axis of Resistance in the region and rearranging its cards, along with Iraq's political role in calming the situation in the region during the next phase, are among the most important files that Larijani brought with him to Baghdad.” The secretary-general “stressed the need to employ tools and redistribute tasks after the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq according to the agreed-upon withdrawal schedule, and to find an official and protocol-based formula for this,” the source added.

A Quartet Of Nicaragua Critics Sings From Washington’s Songbook

In recent weeks, a motley crew of writers has found common cause in attacking Nicaragua’s Sandinista government: Jaden Hong, a high-school student from Sammamish, Washington, who has never visited the country; Jared O. Bell, a former USAID Foreign Service Officer; Barb Arland-Fye, editor of a Catholic newspaper in Iowa; and Gioconda Belli, a 76-year-old Nicaraguan novelist in self-exile. Writing in outlets ranging from The Teen Magazine to the New York Times, they have produced a string of biased, ill-informed pieces that repeat the same well-worn falsehoods about Nicaragua’s elected government. Their attacks on Nicaragua’s revolution reflect Washington’s talking points as it pursues its regime-change agenda.
