Tracing The Rise And Fall Of New Orleans Working Class

On October 24, 1892, nearly 3,000 New Orleans Teamsters, Scalesmen and Packers—known as the Triple Alliance or Triple A—walked off their jobs on the levees to demand overtime pay, a 10-hour-workday, and a closed shop. Representing merchants, railroad owners, and commodities exchanges, the Board of Trade announced that it would sign an agreement with the unions representing the white Scalesmen and Packers’ unions but under no circumstance would it enter into an agreement with “niggers,” as they referred to the Black Teamsters. The New Orleans Times-Democrat did its part to put its thumb on the scales by fabricating front-page stories with hysterical headlines such as “Negroes Attack White Man,” and “Assaulted by Negroes,” but nothing took.

Sumud, The Largest Flotilla To Sail For Gaza, Prepares To Set Out

Barcelona, Spain – Volunteers from across the world have come together in the main hall of one of Spain’s oldest labour unions, the UGT – once a registration centre for international volunteers who came to Spain to fight fascism during the Spanish Civil War. Now it has trained the nonviolent international volunteers – Palestine supporters, activists, journalists and politicians – who will sail on the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza on Sunday. “We are not heroes. We are not the story. The story is the people of Gaza,” organiser Thiago Avila, a lifelong activist for Palestine and environmental justice, told the crowds gathered for a news conference before the ships set sail. Their goal is to deliver humanitarian aid, which is the flotilla’s only cargo, and open a humanitarian corridor for Palestinians facing being starved and killed by Israel.

People’s Conference For Palestine Draws Thousands Against Genocide

The second annual People’s Conference for Palestine opened Friday afternoon, August 29, bringing together thousands of people of conscience in Detroit, Michigan. “Through this conference, I invite all of you to take part in the rich revolutionary tradition of Detroit,” said Nelson Garay, a member of Detroit’s People’s Assembly, a grassroots coalition fighting back against Trump’s policies. “In one voice, let us declare that we will not stand for the dehumanization of the Palestinian people, and we will not stand for anything less than their true liberation from a genocidal, apartheid state.” Taher Dahleh, an organizer with the Palestinian Youth Movement and an activist in the labor movement through his membership in the Communication Workers of America, opened the conference by describing the major milestones in the Palestine solidarity movement since last year.

Microsoft Sacks More Employees For Protesting Gaza Genocide

Microsoft announced on 29 August that an additional four employees were fired for participating in on-site protests against the company’s deep ties to Israel, including its role in providing surveillance tools used in the occupied West Bank and Gaza. The protest group “No Azure for Apartheid” said on Wednesday that Anna Hattle and Riki Fameli received voicemails notifying them of their dismissal after staging sit-in protests inside the office of President Brad Smith this week A day later, it reported that two more workers, Nisreen Jaradat and Julius Shan, had also been fired. The group stated that all four had been involved in protests, including recent encampments outside Microsoft's headquarters.

Labour Just Banned Israel From The UK’s Biggest Arms Fair

The Labour Party government has now confirmed that it has decided to bar Israel’s official delegation from taking part in the UK’s largest arms fair. Israel had been planning to attend the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) in London this September. While campaigners have welcomed the news, they’ve also slammed the UK government for its “cowardly” handwringing – since it was actually the Israeli government that pulled its country pavilion from the event. The Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) opens at London’s ExCeL centre on 9 September. DSEI takes place biennially. Its website has been indicating the presence of a dedicated Israeli country pavilion.

Yemen Confirms Prime Minister Killed In Israeli Strike On Sanaa

A Houthi official has vowed “vengeance” against Israel after the Yemeni group confirmed that an Israeli air strike earlier this week killed the prime minister of the Houthis’ government in the capital, Sanaa. Ahmed al-Rahawi was killed in a Thursday strike on Sanaa along with “several” other ministers, the Houthis said in a statement on Saturday. Al-Rahawi, who served as prime minister in areas of the divided country that the group controls, was targeted along with other members of the Houthi-led government during a workshop, the statement said. The Houthis did not specify how many other ministers were also killed in the Israeli attack.

A Funny Thing Happened To US Warships On Their Way To The Caribbean

The USA has deployed two warships, an armed nuclear submarine and 4,500 troops to the Caribbean Sea. According to Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, their supposed mission is to combat drug trafficking and a drug cartel called “Cartel de los Soles” [Cartel of the Sun’s]. Rubio claims that it is led by President Maduro, and he insists that it is intent on “flooding” the US with narcotics. He stated that this cartel is one of the largest criminal organizations that exists in the hemisphere. Military experts, however, point out that two warships and a nuclear submarine is overkill and ineffective to combat smugglers’ boats, for which helicopters and coast-guard-type ships would be more effective.

Prominent Ukrainian Fascist Shot Dead In Lviv

Earlier today the Ukraine Member of Parliament Andriy Parubiy was shot dead in Lviv (aka Lvov, Lemberg). Parubiy was walking down a road near his home when a man with a motorcycle helmet and a delivery bag came up behind him. The man lifted a pistol and shot Parubiy seven or eight times before walking away. About a year ago another prominent rightwing person, Iryna Farion, was also killed in Lviv. Parubiy was the organizer and commander of the fascist militia during the Maidan coup in February 2014. During those days several snipers from Georgia, stationed at the Hotel Ukraina which was under opposition control, fired and killed policemen as well as protesters.

Weapons Of War Don’t Belong In Our Schools And Sacred Spaces

As the school year resumes across the United States, so too has the tragic recurrence of school shootings. Since August 1, there have been five such incidents nationwide. On Wednesday morning, a devastating attack unfolded at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. Just before 8:30 a.m., during morning Mass, a 23-year-old former student opened fire outside the school’s chapel. The shooting lasted only a few minutes but left lasting and tragic consequences: two students were killed, and 18 others were injured — including 15 students between the ages of 6 and 15, as well as three elderly parishioners in their 80s. Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan (White Earth Ojibwe) issued a statement that read: “My heart goes out to all those affected by the terrifying act of violence at Annunciation Catholic school this morning.

Medicare Pilot Hands Denials To Private Algorithms

The Trump administration is launching a pilot program in six states that will allow artificial intelligence to help decide whether elderly Americans can receive certain medical procedures under traditional Medicare. The move has been likened by critics to the creation of “AI death panels,” with experts and advocates warning it risks importing the most unpopular practices of private insurance into the federal health program. The pilot, officially named the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction Model, is scheduled to begin in January and last six years. It will run in Arizona, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and Washington. Under the program, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will hire private companies to use A.I. tools to make “prior authorization” decisions—determinations about whether Medicare will pay for particular procedures.

AI ‘Slop’ Websites Are Publishing Climate Science Denial

At the start of June, MSN, the world’s fourth-largest news aggregator, posted an article from a new climate-focused publication, Climate Cosmos, entitled: “Why Top Experts Are Rethinking Climate Alarmism”. The article – by “Kathleen Westbrook M.Sc Climate Science” – cited a finding from the “Global Climate Research Institute” that “65 percent of surveyed climate professionals advocate for pragmatic, solution-focused messaging over fear-driven warnings.” But there were a couple of major problems: the Global Climate Research Institute doesn’t exist, and nor does Kathleen Westbrook, whose profile on Climate Cosmos has now been renamed to ‘Henrieke Otte’. The article accused those who advocate for climate action of overstating the harms caused by burning fossil fuels.

Antarctica On Alert!

Over the past year, several studies about highly dangerous signals of Antarctica on the edge of major abrupt change have appeared in scholarly publications. These studies in premier publications expose rapid changes, e.g. (1) discovery of the western Antarctic Peninsula as one of the fastest warming places on Earth (2) ocean currents threaten to collapse Antarctic Ice Shelves (3) present day mass loss rates are a precursor for West Antarctic Ice Sheet collapse (4) an unexpected ice collapse hints at worrying changes on the Antarctic coast. The new scientific narrative has scientists very nervous. Abrupt changes have become more common in the climate system, but Antarctica is one region that nobody wants to hear about “abrupt change,” especially with the potential impact nearly impossible to analyze with certainty.

Why We Remember Katrina

Hurricane Katrina first struck the United States on August 25, 2025 making landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane, the least powerful storm in that designation. But after being downgraded to the category of tropical storm, it gained strength as it traveled into the Gulf of Mexico and again reached hurricane status, making landfall again in Mississippi and Louisiana on August 29, 2025.  Residents of Mobile, Alabama, Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi, and New Orleans and other Louisiana cities were all devastated by the storm surge. Twenty years later when we think of Katrina it is the images from New Orleans, where large portions of the city are below sea level, which come to mind.

European Dockworkers And Medics To Join Global Sumud Flotilla

Delegations from at least 17 European countries are preparing to join the Global Sumud Flotilla, which will set sail on Sunday, August 31, in a new attempt to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Many of the crew members taking part in this effort to deliver urgently needed supplies have already been active in Palestine solidarity campaigns in their own countries over the past years. For them, joining the flotilla is a logical step in confronting Israel’s ongoing genocide. Belgian physician Hanne Bosselaers, active with Medics for the People (MPLP–GVHV) and the People’s Health Movement (PHM), emphasized that it is impossible to remain idle while a genocide unfolds in Palestine. Like other PHM members who will also be on board, including British emergency doctor James Smith and Moroccan health activist Aziz Rhali, Bosselaers has long worked with Palestinian health organizations and highlighted the resilience and determination of Gaza’s health workers.

Washington Blocks Palestinian Leaders From Attending UN General Assembly

In an unprecedented move, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on 29 August revoked visas for Palestinian Authority (PA) leaders scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly in New York in September. The State Department justified the move by citing PA payments to the families of Palestinian martyrs, President Mahmoud Abbas' plan to use a "constitutional declaration" to declare an independent Palestinian state at the General Assembly meeting, and Palestinian efforts to hold Israel accountable for war crimes in international courts. "The Palestinian Authority must also cease its attempts to circumvent the negotiations through international legal campaigns, including appeals to the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, and efforts to secure unilateral recognition of a possible Palestinian state," the State Department said in a statement.
