Green Goals, Dirty Fuel: Europe’s Fertiliser Industry Bets On Shale

The coastal city of Freeport, Texas is a dense tangle of metal pipes, tanks and towers. Located 60 miles south of Houston, it’s home to a sprawling petrochemical complex – one of the largest and most polluting in the United States.    Among its facilities is a plant dedicated to the production of ammonia, a colourless compound of nitrogen and hydrogen, and a key ingredient in fertilisers widely used on industrial arable farms – including on fields of barley, wheat and maize across Europe. Chemicals giants Yara and BASF opened the “world-scale” factory to great fanfare in 2018, promising “cost-efficient” and “sustainable” ammonia production.

15 Years Ago I Was On A Gaza Flotilla Mission That Ended In 10 Dead And 50 Wounded By Israeli Commandos

Fifteen years ago, in May 2010, I was one of approximately 700 persons that sailed on 7 unarmed civilian ships to break the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza and bring needed food, medicines and materials to Palestinians in Gaza who were suffering under the brutal, inhumane policies enacted by the Israeli government, which included a naval, land and air blockade of Gaza. These policies included “putting Palestinians on a diet” by reducing the caloric intake of persons living in Gaza by allowing a much reduce number of trucks carrying food into Gaza.  I don’t think 15 years ago, we could have predicted the cruelty of the Israeli government as it now conducts the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians living in the West Bank.

Serbia’s Organized Chaos

Serbia is a small country which used to be a favorite of Western Allied powers like France and Britain for its heroic resistance to Austrian and German invasion in two world wars.  They liked it so much that in redrawing European boundaries at Versailles in 1918, they enlarged it into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes which later became Yugoslavia. Some Serb leaders at the time felt that this was too much, but at the time, Croat and Slovene leaders were glad to leave the Austro-Hungarian Empire and join the winning side.  All this changed abruptly in the 1990s. Germany had been reunited and began to drop its humble post-World War II foreign policy.

Think Tank Behind Project 2025 Just Published Trump’s Iran War Plan

Flying under the media radar, the Heritage Foundation—a think tank widely viewed as the intellectual engine behind the Trump administration’s foreign policy agenda—has published a brief that appears to map out the president’s prospective approach to Iran. The six-page document advocates ending nuclear negotiations and pursuing joint U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. Though thinly veiled as a policy analysis, the brief reads more like a soft launch for a war strategy. Heritage has long played a predictive role in Trump-era foreign policy. Its reports and recommendations often find their way into official doctrine, especially on issues involving Israel and Iran.

Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful’ Cuts To Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid And More

The MAGA movement claims to support health care for vulnerable Americans, but their budget tells a different story. 13.7 million people will lose Medicaid — nearly 1 in 5 current enrollees. Nationally, 72 million rely on Medicaid, including 1.6 million in Louisiana and 180,000 in New Orleans. Another 500,000 low-income Louisianans get subsidized ACA coverage. Everyone on Medicaid or ACA plans will suffer from these cuts. This isn’t “saving money” — it’s a war on the poor, sick, and vulnerable. Millions will suffer, hospitals will close, and families will be bankrupted — all to fund tax cuts for the wealthy. These cuts are cruelty by design.

FBI Visits Journalist For Publishing Alleged Shooter’s Manifesto

Last week, U.S. journalist Ken Klippenstein was visited by the FBI. The Feds showed up at Klippenstein’s place because he published the so-called manifesto of Elias Rodriguez, who is suspected of killing two Israeli Embassy staffers, on his Substack. As Klippenstein points out in his post about the incident, any mainstream outlet could have published the manifesto, but has chosen not to. “The media just doesn’t want to publish it,” he notes. “And the FBI doesn’t want the media to think it can.” He says the agents were “aggressive and threatening.” They asked him 11 questions about the manifesto, most of them connected to how he obtained it and whether he had any additional knowledge about Rodriguez.

Chris Hedges: Trump’s Useful Idiots

The media, universities, the Democratic Party and liberals, by embracing the fiction of “rampant antisemitism,” laid the groundwork for their own demise. Columbia and Princeton, where I have taught, and Harvard, which I attended, are not incubators of hatred towards Jews. The New York Times, where I worked for fifteen years and which Trump calls “an enemy of the people,” is slavishly subservient to the Zionist narrative. What these institutions have in common is not antisemitism, but liberalism. And liberalism, with its creed of pluralism and inclusiveness, is slated by our authoritarian regime for obliteration.

Amid ‘Catastrophic’ Food Insecurity, Child Illness In Gaza Turns Deadly

Before the war, conditions like scabies and lice were manageable. Treatment required basic medication and hygiene. Now, overcrowding, shared living spaces, and limited hygiene supplies have made containment nearly impossible, the doctor says. Secondary infections, fever, and pneumonia are becoming more frequent.  By mid-2024, recorded cases of scabies and lice surpassed 96,000, mostly among displaced children. Chickenpox cases rose to nearly 9,274. “Amidst the massive numbers of affected people, we suffer a serious deficiency in access to medicines,” a pediatrician in Gaza told Mondoweiss. “We’re forced to treat patients with whatever limited quantities we receive from the Ministry of Health.”

Starving Palestinians Storm US Aid Facility In Gaza

Palestinians clamoured for aid and gunfire rang out in chaotic scenes, as a controversial US-Israeli aid distribution scheme turned to shambles. Journalists in the besiged Gaza Strip said hungry and beleagured residents forced to stand outside a facility holding aid rushed inside because of delays conducting detailed security checks on recepients. According to Israeli army sources cited by Israeli media, Americans affiliated with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation had to be rescued once they lost control of the facility. The Israeli military denied firing on the crowds but gunfire was heard at the scene, possibly as a result of warning shots fired by American mercenaries securing the facility.

Rubio, Cuba And The Zionist Model

Marco Rubio has turned into one of President Donald Trump’s “go to” guys. Appointed secretary of state at the beginning of Trump’s second term, and recently appointed acting national security adviser, he has proven effective in translating Trumpian goals into policy practices. It is not that difficult for Rubio because he shares many of those same biases. For instance, a seemingly absolute belief that the Israelis must be supported even as they lay waste to humanitarian principles and international law. To this end, as secretary of state, Rubio dedicated himself to revamping the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. Why?

Get Ready To Pay In ZuckBucks

Amid a flood of industry lobbying in Washington, D.C., and Democrats’ capitulation, the Senate is set to pass the GENIUS Act, a sweeping cryptocurrency law that could spread fraud-ridden, destabilizing digital currencies across the banking system. But lawmakers and consumer protection experts warn that the bill has an even more serious problem: It would allow Elon Musk and other Big Tech tycoons to issue their own private currencies. That means we could soon live in a world where all online transactions will require us to pay for goods in billionaires’ own made-up monopoly money, for which tech giants will be able to charge exorbitant transaction fees.

Carbon Capture And Storage: The Frivolous Gamble Of Climate Policy

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has become an essential part of European and global climate policy. The logic is simple: we capture CO2 emissions from factories and store them deep underground. This way we save the planet and the industry. Industrial emissions account for about 25% of European emissions. To become climate neutral by 2050, they must disappear. CCS is also being counted on to green some of the energy sector’s emissions. Governments are willing to provide supportive regulation and invest heavily in it. However, there are fundamental concerns about the feasibility of the technology, both technically and economically. Its failure could prove disastrous and undermine Europe’s climate strategy altogether.

Prescient Warnings About Helene Didn’t Reach People In Harm’s Way

When Hurricane Helene plowed over the Southeast last September, it caused more inland deaths than any hurricane in recorded history. The highest per capita death toll occurred in Yancey County, a rural expanse in the rugged Black Mountains of North Carolina devastated by flash flooding and landslides. On Monday, we published a story recounting what happened in Yancey. Our intent was to show, through those horrific events, how highly accurate weather warnings did not reach many of those most in harm’s way — and that inland communities are not nearly as prepared for catastrophic storms as coastal ones. No one in Yancey received evacuation orders.

Spain: International Conference To Call For Arms Embargo On Israel

The Spanish wire service EFE reports that delegations from 20 countries met Sunday in Madrid in a push to pressure Israel to halt its total war on Gaza and to establish a Palestinian state. Convened by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, the conference sought to move to concrete actions. Israel had blocked all humanitarian aid for two months beginning in March, provoking a crisis of malnutrition in Gaza, almost all of whose people have been made internal refugees several times over by the Israeli military. Israel began letting a small amount of aid in last week, apparently under the pressure of the Trump administration, but United Nations officials decried it as “a drop in the ocean” compared to the urgent needs of 2.2 million Palestinians.

Why We Must Reclaim African Liberation Day

Our generation is living through a seismic shift in the struggle for African liberation. We are witnessing the rise of a new revolutionary Pan-Africanism that challenges imperialism not just in words, but in action. On one front, Captain Ibrahim Traoré stands as a living embodiment of our ancestors’ dreams. In the spirit of Kwame Nkrumah, he is leading Burkina Faso through a profound dialectical transformation – reclaiming land and resources, dismantling neo-colonial dependencies, and ensuring the wealth of the soil serves the people of Burkina Faso. It is a rupture with imperialism, a bold step toward a dignified and sovereign Africa.
