On Sunday August 17, 2025, the first round of presidential elections in the Plurinational State of Bolivia were held in the small Andean nation of 12 million people. Now the country is headed to an October 19 run-off between centrist Christian Democratic Party Senator Rodrigo Paz, the son of a former president, and former right wing President Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga of the Libre Party. The election results on Sunday ended twenty years of MAS-IPSP (Movement Towards Socialism - Political Instrument for the Sovereignty of the People) in power with MAS candidate and current Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo polling at between 1-2%, effectively completing the objectives of the 2019 coup.

The Black Alliance for Peace, an African internationalist organization committed to peace and opposition to war and imperialism, and Cooperation Jackson, which is building a solidarity economy anchored by worker-owned co-ops in West Jackson, are co-hosting several Black August events with Fanon’s eldest daughter. Mireille Fanon Mendès-France is a jurist, an educator, and an anti-racism expert who passionately shares her father’s commitment to rebellion against colonialism in its many forms.

When Israel initiated plans to evict Palestinians from their homes in occupied East Jerusalem to make way for illegal settlers, millions of young people around the world got involved in a high-profile social media campaign to raise awareness. Using the hashtag #SaveSheikhJarrah, more than 40 million people joined in, forming part of a wave of online organising that set the stage for a new era of pro-Palestine digital activism. That trend continued as Israel launched its ongoing genocide in Gaza in October 2023 with activists dedicating their instagram feeds and TikTok reels to spreading awareness of Israeli atrocities. But mounting censorship on social media, digital fatigue and a hunger for deeper forms of engagement, are forcing organisers to shift gears and adopt new modes of activism.

Microsoft Launches Formal Review Into Gaza Surveillance Claims

Microsoft announced on 15 August that it has opened an independent review into the reported use of its Azure cloud technology by the Israeli military's Unit 8200, following detailed investigations published by The Guardian, +972 Magazine, and Local Call. The company updated a blog post originally published in May, saying it does not always have visibility into how clients deploy its software once installed on private servers and devices. “Microsoft appreciates that The Guardian’s recent report raises additional and precise allegations that merit a full and urgent review,” the company said. It pledged to release its findings once the review, led by Covington & Burling LLP, is complete.

Last Tuesday, I went for the second time to observe an immigration hearing in downtown Manhattan, as part of a coalition of groups whose work seems inspired by Central American accompaniment strategies. Besides providing a friendly presence to people in horrible circumstances, the point of going is to collect names and emergency contact numbers — so that if someone ends up disappeared, they won’t disappear as completely. When I entered Courtroom 7 on the 14th floor of 26 Broadway, an Ecuadorian refugee — I’ll call him Andrés — was sitting before Judge Deborah Klahr (who, like all Immigration Court judges, is actually an attorney appointed by the Justice Department). Klahr was in the process of informing Andrés that the government had recommended he be deported.

Could Poor Countries Hold The US Accountable For Climate Chaos?

The verdict is in: Rich countries can be held responsible for their contributions to climate change. And that decision could leave the United States more isolated than ever. In late July, the UN’s highest court — the International Court of Justice (ICJ)—unanimously ruled that countries have an obligation to prevent catastrophic climate change by transitioning from fossil fuels and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The ruling specifically condemned governments that subsidize fossil fuels and license their expansion — and said that these actions may make states liable for harmful climate impacts. In the last year, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) and International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) have made similar rulings. The overarching conclusion: mainstream global institutions are calling for an end to fossil fuels.

The news industry has undergone a sea-change in the last two decades. Print readership of newspapers has declined sharply, while their digital readership has edged up slowly. Local newspapers have consolidated into ever larger chains controlled by private equity and vulture funds. Newer digital-only media sites have multiplied. Into this changing news landscape has come an influx of new journalists who bridle at the poor working conditions and low pay inflicted by media moguls building their empires on the cheap. Thousands of these media workers are finding a home in the NewsGuild. The Guild has transformed itself in recent years, thanks to rising rank-and-file militancy and innovative organizing tactics. Since 2020, the Guild has organized 210 workplaces, including some of the largest media organizations in the U.S.

As an educator, to me, it’s so important that students are part of the struggle. I know when I was in high school during the Vietnam War, anytime I asked about it, I was shot down and told, “What does that have to do with education?” It has everything to do with education. It has everything to do with growing new leadership and teaching students or helping students, assisting students take the leadership in terms of being involved in the movement for justice. In a sense, Trump and the policies of the federal government have done a lot of the organizing for us because there’s lots of young people who just really want to know what’s going on and want to be involved in stopping it, whether it be Palestine, fighting ICE, or actions against the terrorism of the police.

The famous quote by Italian Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci seems to have been written for the moment humanity is currently experiencing: “The old is dying, and the new cannot be born. In this interregnum, monsters arise.” The world is going through a civilizational crisis in which the neoliberal capitalist order, although mortally wounded, continues to impose its predatory logic, that of the use of force and the resurgence of fascism, while emancipatory alternatives fail to consolidate. In this vacuum, monsters proliferate: wars and attempts at recolonization, climate crisis, structural hunger, collapse of multilateralism and international law placed at the service of the world’s powers that be.

How Finance Wrecked Democracy

Michael A. McCarthy’s The Master’s Tools is about the power that finance exerts over people. He inquires into the problem and how it could realistically be solved: Why has finance capitalism left people worse off and further wrecked democracy along the way? Why does the financial sector increasingly determine our lives and politics… ? [H]ow might an alternative to investment for profit leave people better off, reinvigorate the demos, and rebuild democracy? (xii) When I started reading the book I thought maybe McCarthy’s response to these questions could be better reviewed by someone whose work is directly related to them. Still it seemed like an excellent resource for someone who is seeking to learn about the subject. It soon became apparent that the point of his book — ‘democratizing finance’ (9) — calls for responses from outsiders to the author’s field.

As thousands of people took to the streets of Los Angeles to defend their communities against state-sanctioned abductions of immigrants this June, the Senate Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism (SSCC) put three organizations—Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), and the independent political organization Unión del Barrio (UdB)—on notice. Led by Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, the SSCC normally oversees anti-terrorism enforcement and policy, and directs the work of the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Justice Department Criminal Division.

Palestinian Youth Movement Makes Genocide Support Costly For Maersk

After two years of continuous effort in research, agitation and direct action, the organizers of the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) celebrated a landmark organizing victory in late June. Their “Mask Off Maersk” campaign had sought to prove the complicity of the Danish freight-logistics titan A.P. Møller – Maersk A/S in the genocide in Gaza. Maersk, as it’s generally known, was found by PYM to be contributing to the ongoing crimes against humanity in Gaza by shipping arms transfers to the perpetrating Israeli military; these shipments included critical parts for the F-35 fighters that have been used to bomb Gaza’s civilian population.

REI Union Members Win A Major Victory

Union members at REI won a major victory when REI Co-op, the outdoor recreational gear specialty store, agreed to the demand to establish a national bargaining structure for the 11 unionized REI stores. The REI bargaining committee hailed the agreement as “a tremendous step forward in negotiating a first contract.” Workers at the 11 REI stores are represented by United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Locals 5, 663, 700, 1208, 1445 and 3000 and the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) Locals 379 and 1102. First to unionize was the Soho store in New York City, followed by the store in Berkeley, California, in 2022.

A wind of despair blows relentlessly across the world. This wind of panic is the result of poverty and social inequalities. This has given rise to widespread wars that take various forms depending on the reality. Faced with the ravages of this phenomenon, Haiti is not spared (in fact, it is one of the biggest victims). Haiti is plunged into insecurity in all its forms: poverty, arms trafficking and trade, organ and drugs trafficking and a lack of transportation, all of which have plunged the country into total financial insecurity. For many, Haiti has never experienced such a chaotic situation in history. This critical situation is not without consequences for society. It forces the population to adopt a different understanding of life; many essential sectors in the society including the universities, the media, organizations and political parties, etc. have suffered an unprecedented state of discouragement.
