The New McCarthyism Was Started By Liberals

The censorship of radical voices is an old story that’s become much more dire—and current—with the detention by immigration agents on March 8 of Mahmoud Khalil, a former student activist and permanent resident of the United States who has been at the forefront of protests at Columbia University against the Israeli onslaught in Gaza. In a statement to The Free Press about the case, a Trump administration official said, “The allegation here is not that he was breaking the law.” Rather, the official continued, Khalil’s activism was “mobilizing support for Hamas” in addition to being antisemitic and “hence, contrary to the interests of the U.S.”

Over 4,000 Factory Workers Laid Off As Tariffs Spark Economic Chaos

More than 4,000 American manufacturing workers lost their jobs this week, the latest evidence of mounting economic instability tied to former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. Congressman Ro Khanna and labor leaders are raising urgent concerns as layoffs sweep across the industrial sector, hitting plants in more than a dozen states and leaving thousands of union workers without employment or clear prospects. Automaker Stellantis announced Thursday that it would temporarily lay off 900 workers in the United States due to production disruptions at its Canadian and Mexican facilities—disruptions directly linked to recently announced tariffs.

Palestine Missing From ‘Hands Off!’ March

On April 5, protesters will converge on Washington to hold a massive march in support of Palestine. The President has changed since the last big event in DC, but many of the demands have not. Activists are calling on the United States government to stop bankrolling the genocide in Gaza and sever ties from apartheid Israel. The additional element this time around is the Trump administration’s vast deportation program, which has targeted multiple university students for participating in protests. “This movement is made of students, workers, teachers, artists, activists, healthcare workers, tech workers and people of conscience all over the world who will not back down in the face of repression and intimidation, and will never back down so long as Gaza is under attack,” reads a statement on the march’s website.

Why Are Hands Off Rallies Supporting NATO?

We are passionate supporters of all but one of the items on the Hands Off agenda for the April 5 rallies. We couldn’t agree more that the corrupt U.S. government should stop destroying, privatizing, firing, and giving away the post office, schools, land, Social Security, healthcare, environmental protections, and all sorts of essential public services. But we are deeply disturbed to see NATO (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization) on the list of items that we are rallying to protect. Many people believe that NATO is a peace-loving, defensive alliance, but the opposite is true. During the past 30 years, NATO has fomented a vast arc of violence stretching from Libya to Afghanistan, leaving villages bombed, infrastructure destroyed, and countless dead.

With Section 230 Repeal, Democrats, Media Offer New Censorship Tools

In a move that threatens to constrain online communication, congressional Democrats are partnering with their Republican counterparts to repeal a niche but crucial internet law. According to tech trade publication the Information (3/21/25), Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.) has allied with Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) to reintroduce a bill that would repeal Section 230, a provision of the 1996 Communications Decency Act. Section 230 dictates that when unlawful speech occurs online, the only party responsible is the speaker, not the hosting website or app or any party that shared the content in question.

Bernie And AOC Sheepdog For The Democrats

“Bernie Sanders is this election's Democratic sheepdog. The sheepdog is a card the Democratic party plays every presidential primary season when there's no White House Democrat running for re-election.” Bruce Dixon The late Bruce Dixon, Black Agenda Report co-founder and Managing Editor, is credited with coining the term “sheepdog” to describe Vermont senator Bernie Sanders when he challenged Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 2016. Dixon was correct and prescient. Sanders lost the nomination to Clinton and as promised, endorsed her anyway.

Trump’s Rule By Fiat A Bipartisan Legacy

U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest defiance of the courts — this time refusing to follow an appellate judge’s order to halt migrant deportations — has triggered another round of liberal outrage. Critics are calling it an authoritarian move, a blatant assault on the rule of law, and a warning sign that American democracy is on its last legs. But if this is the end of democracy, it’s been ending for a long time. And not just at Trump’s hands. The central truth we keep missing — especially on the left — is that Trump is not an aberration. He’s a grotesque continuation.

The Real Outrage In Yemen

Beginning in March of 2017 and for the following eight years, at 11:00 a.m. on every Saturday morning, a group of New Yorkers has assembled in Manhattan’s Union Square for “the Yemen vigil.” Their largest banner proclaims: “Yemen is Starving.” Other signs say: “Put a human face on war in Yemen,” and “Let Yemen Live.” Participants in the vigil decry the suffering in Yemen where one of every two children under the age of five is malnourished, “a statistic that is almost unparalleled across the world.” UNICEF reports that 540,000 Yemeni girls and boys are severely and acutely malnourished, an agonizing, life-threatening condition which weakens immune systems, stunts growth, and can be fatal.

Ukraine, War Propaganda, And The Return Of Russiagate

“Mueller Finds No Trump Russia Conspiracy …” proclaimed a portion of a New York Times headline on March 24, 2019. Two years of special prosecutor Robert Mueller’s investigation ended with a whimper after endless screeds about “walls closing in” on an alleged Trump conspiracy with the Russian government. The corporate media and elements of the surveillance state fed public dislike of the seemingly accidental president with false tales of “pee tapes,” Russians hacking the Democratic National Committee, and other claims later found to be false.

Trump Waves White ‘Supremacy’ Flag; Democrats Wave White Flag

Donald Trump wasted no time implementing his initiatives following his inauguration as the 47th president of the United States. As of February 10th, the president has signed 86 executive actions - 61 Executive Orders and 25 Presidential Memos/Proclamations - covering a range of sectors from foreign policy, to energy production, to reshaping a large swath of the federal government in his image and that of his acolytes including, but not limited to, his Deputy Chief of Staff, Stephen Miller, and billionaire oligarch, Elon Musk. It’s clear that the driving paradigm of Trump’s political, legislative, and social agenda is (informed ?) by white “supremacy” ideology

122 Years Of US Imperialism In Guantánamo

Colonialist Christopher Columbus landed in Guantánamo Bay on his second voyage to the Americas in 1494. The empires of England, France, and Spain later disputed Guantánamo, a territory of 45 square miles. This “discovery” of the Cuban island unleashed a Spanish extermination campaign against the indigenous population, through disease, starvation, and brutality. What followed the genocide was the “vertiginous growth of the slave trade based in Havana”. Today, Guantánamo Bay remains occupied by the United States. It is used as a detention center by the most powerful military in history.

Protesters Blockade DNC Party Meeting

Spurred on by the recent wildfires in Los Angeles that experts say were climate-change related, the activist group Climate Defiance held a protest on January 31 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington, D.C., against the Democratic National Committee (DNC), calling on it to get dirty fossil fuel money out of Democratic politics forever. The protest started inside the resort’s main atrium with a three-story banner drop from a hotel room that said, “Oil $$$ Out of the DNC.” Dozens of protesters then marched around the hotel’s ground floor, chanting, “Which side are you on?” and “We need clean air, not another billionaire.”

Trump Keeps His Promises While Democrats Must Be Abandoned

Donald Trump is once again president of the United States. The man who was counted out politically after he was charged and convicted of felonies in cases that were legally dubious efforts to keep him out of the white house, once again emerged victorious and is the 47th president of the United States. Trump is a significant figure in U.S. politics, having won two presidential elections when the odds were against him. His success is in large part due to racist appeals to white voters. But those clarion calls might fall on deaf ears were it not for Democratic Party collusion with a greedy plutocracy and its own racism, which consigns its most loyal constituency to opportunistic tokenism.

Serving The Oligarchs: A Look Back At Biden And Forward At Trump

As the Biden presidency ends, Clearing the FOG takes another look at Biden's legacy. This time the focus is on his economic and foreign policies. Margaret Kimberley, the senior editor of Black Agenda Report and author of "Prejudential: Black America and the Presidents," describes Biden in the context of a country founded upon settler colonialism and chattel slavery. She discusses Biden's responsibility for the war in Ukraine, the genocide in Palestine and brutal interference in Latin America and the Caribbean. Kimberley also speaks about what can be expected from the new Trump administration given some of his cabinet choices.

Liberal Media And Personalities: The Bigger They Are, The Harder They Fall

On Dec 11, 2024, it was reported that the post-election audiences for the leading liberal media, MSNBC and CNN, continued to drop: 46% and 33%, respectively. Some of MSNBC’s biggest stars, including Rachel Maddow, have been asked to take pay cuts as revenues and profits come under pressure. The dozens of Kamala Harris’s supporters, among actors, pop music figures, and TV host personalities, continue to announce their departures from the Trumpian U.S. to another country. It seems like one is at an airport where we hear departure announcements every few minutes. But no one seems to be paying any attention or shedding tears.
