A German boat captain faces a long and costly trial in Italy for charges targeting her humanitarian efforts on behalf of refugees. "Italy's fascists are using this case as a showcase to deter others from aiding migrants. They would prefer to let people drown in the Mediterranean." —Rula Jebreal. Captain Pia Klemp, 35, told Basler Zeitung on June 7 that her upcoming trial in Italy for years of efforts with the civilian lifeboat "Iuventa" that saved at least 1,000 lives will take years and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Klemp faces up to 20 years in prison, but, she said, whether or not she ends up in jail—she would challenge any conviction in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France if necessary...

On Tuesday, June 4, 2019, activist, educator, and farmer Holly Stein began serving a ten day sentence at the Bristol County Jail and House of Corrections in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. She was one of several activists arrested in August 2018 for blockading the entrance to the jail she is now incarcerated in over the Sheriff’s participation in the 287(g) program, which allows Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson to coordinate and participate in apprehension and deportation matters alongside Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Exposures are mounting of the horrendous and illegal conditions under which immigrant workers and children are being held, even as President Donald Trump responds to mounting threats of impeachment with new attacks on refugees and fresh appeals to his fascistic base. On Friday, CNN cited a report by the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general on inhumane, unsanitary and dangerous conditions at the El Paso Del Norte Processing Center in Texas. The inspector general found “standing room only conditions,” with detainees “standing on toilets in the cells to make room and gain breathing space, thus limiting access to the toilets.”

"I've never seen it like this and I've lived here 30 years. My business is suffering," said Narciso Lopez Flores, a convenience store owner in Tapachula. "Piles of trash are everywhere and people are defecating near to where they have to sleep. I'm worried about everybody's health, my family's and theirs."

Omar Barghouti was travelling to the US on the invitation of Arab American Institute (AAI) in Washington to speak at New York University's DC campus. Two University of Arizona students who protested an on-campus presentation by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency last month by calling the agents "murder patrol" and "an extension of the KKK" have been charged with misdemeanors, university officials confirmed on Tuesday. The case is being closely watched by free-speech advocates who say it is unusual for arrests to follow a nonviolent campus protest. They say tougher crackdowns on student protests can be expected in light of President Trump's executive order threatening to withhold federal money from campuses that fail to protect free speech.

Massive ICE Workplace Raid Jails 280 Immigrant Workers In Texas

Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided an Allen, Texas business on Wednesday morning and arrested 280 undocumented workers. The business, CVE technology, employs 2,100 workers who repair cell phones and other electronic devices. The business is the third largest employer in that city. Some 200 law enforcement officers participated in the raid, rounding up the entire workforce and separating them into groups based on immigration status. Agents then forced workers to wear wristbands, labeling employees in green if they had legal status and yellow if they were suspected of being undocumented.
