Denver Police Department Brutalizes Student Encampment For Palestine

Denver, CO – On Friday, April 26, the Denver Police Department (DPD) attacked an encampment for Palestine set up by Students for a Democratic Society. The encampment was set up on Thursday, April 25 as a part of the growing wave of student encampments across the country. The organizers are demanding their universities completely divest from Israel and corporations that are helping Israel carry out a genocide against the Palestinian people. Around noon, April 26, university officials called DPD, which then descended upon the encampment and started arresting protesters.

Columbia University Threatens To Deploy National Guard On Students

Columbia University students who are part of the Gaza solidarity encampment have raised the alarm that during negotiations, the university administration threatened to call in the National Guard to evacuate the camp. The threat from Columbia’s administration comes on the seventh day of the encampment of hundreds of students who are demanding that the university divest all finances, from corporations that profit in any way shape or form from Israeli genocide and cut academic ties with Israeli institutions. The Columbia encampment already withstood a violent eviction at the hands of the New York City Police Department on Thursday April 18.

While standing in solidarity with Palestine, the student movement has once again escalated protests on campus with the campus encampment movement. Students are calling out their universities and its administrators for their decades’ long support of Israel’s genocide of Palestinians and are demanding that our universities divest and cut all ties to Israel! University administrators have no right to ignore the students as university administrators continue to support the genocide in Gaza and maintain support for Israel.

Students Launch Encampments In Solidarity With Gaza Across The US

Almost a week after Columbia students launched their Gaza Solidarity Encampment, students across the country have taken from their example and began encampments in public spaces in their own universities in solidarity with Palestine. In the early hours of the morning of April 22, students at New York University began an encampment on Gould Plaza, joining their New York City counterparts at the New School, which had launched an encampment the previous day. In the Greater Boston Area students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Emerson College, and Tufts University set up encampments at their own universities.

Institutionalized academia has long stood against the radical struggle of student activists, and the last 7 months have proven no different. Activism on college campuses has always been a stronghold for social justice and anti-war movements, but even more than that, it is a study of hope as a discipline. As despair eats at us and threatens hopelessness, students remind us that together, freedom is not only attainable, it is inevitable.

U.S. Representative Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), chair of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, sent a letter on March 27 to officials at Rutgers University castigating “senior administrators, faculty, staff, academic departments and centers, and student organizations” for creating “a pervasive climate of antisemitism,” and an alleged “failure to protect Jewish students.” This letter is a small part of a larger assault on progressive pedagogy and activism at college campuses which is currently sweeping the country. The House Committee, aiming to silence campus supporters of Palestine, has already targeted some of the nation’s most high-profile private universities and is now turning its attention to public institutions, starting with Rutgers University.

Maple Grove, MN — Pro-Palestine activists blockaded an Amazon distribution center in the northwestern Minneapolis suburb of Maple Grove as part of A15 Action, a global day of action against Israel’s war on Gaza. In a separate action in the Twin Cities, a Wells Fargo Bank branch in South Minneapolis was vandalized and had its windows broken. Starting at 7 a.m. on April 15, dozens of activists blocked all distribution from the Maple Grove Amazon facility for more than two hours, delaying an estimated 100-plus shipping trucks. Four different elements made up the blockade and protest with all four deploying simultaneously.

German Police Shut Down Pro-Palestine Conference

On April 12, in another round of repression against Palestine solidarity organizers, German police shut down the Palestine Congress in Berlin, arresting several attendees and ordering delegates to leave immediately. German officials also prohibited scheduled speaker Ghassan Abu Sitta, Palestinian-British surgeon and the rector of Glasgow University, from even entering the country. The Congress aimed to raise awareness about Germany’s charges of complicity in Israeli genocide in the International Court of Justice, which have been raised by Nicaragua.

Once again, it shows that direct action can have results. The International Peoples’ Assembly (IPA), representing political organizations and people’s movements across five continents, has called for massive mobilizations worldwide to mark the Yawm al-Ard (Land Day)—a day to celebrate the struggle of Palestinians against occupation. Land Day marks the anniversary of the killing of six protesters by the Israeli occupation on March 30, 1976, in response to a general strike and marches organized by Palestinians. On that day, large-scale demonstrations were carried out by Palestinians across historic Palestine against the Israeli government’s plan to expropriate thousands of dunums of Arab-owned land near the sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias).
