The People Of Jeju Island Continue Protest For Peace Over Christmas

Christmas in Gangjeong, and still the construction of the massive naval base to accommodate America’s “Pivot to Asia” continues without a break. And, today, as they do everyday, the priests, nuns, villagers and their supporters celebrate mass and pray for peace. Today, Bishop Peter Kang, the Bishop of Jeju, came to Gangjeong to celebrate Christmas mass at the gate of the base in freezing weather. Grace Kim is a Korean, who went abroad at quite an early age. She went to high school and college in the US and has been living in Berlin for the last 5 years studying Visual and Media Anthropology at Freie University. Grace is in Gangjeong for three months keeping a daily video diary as she conducts her research. When I went to Gangjeong, I learned that each of us has a voice and that with knowledge comes responsibility. The least we can do is to amplify the voices of Gangjeong and do what we can to bring justice and peace to our world. I wanted to share this wonderful video Grace posted today, Christmas 2013.

Video: Snowden’s Christmas Message

Edward Snowden delivered an ‘Alternative Christmas Message’ on British TV on Wednesday. In his pre-recorded address, the whistleblower calls for an end to mass spying by governments, stating that a child born today will have "no conception of privacy." Snowden, who is behind the biggest leak in the US National Security Agency (NSA)’s history, will speak to Brits on December 25 in Channel 4’s annual message. The address is an alternative to the Queen’s Christmas speech, which is shown by the nation’s other leading broadcasters each year. The video was filmed in Russia, where Snowden has lived since being granted temporary asylum in August. The address will be his first television appearance since arriving in Moscow. In excerpts from the address published by Channel 4, Snowden says that British author George Orwell's warnings of data collection in his classic dystopian novel ‘1984’ are “nothing compared to what we have available today.” “The types of collection in the book – microphones and video cameras, TVs that watch us – are nothing compared to what we have available today. We have sensors in our pockets that track us everywhere we go. Think about what this means for the privacy of the average person.”

Reports On ‘Fed Up’

Yesterday was the 100th birthday of the Federal Reserve. A private corporation that was given the power to create money in 2013. There are 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks whose stock is owned by commercial banks. Yesterday there were protests at all 12 regional banks organized under the headline 'FedUp' and they sought to 'Illuminate the Fed.' They describe yesterday as "launching a year long coast-to-coast campaign to shine light—literally, using personal flashlights, Light Brigade letters, and high-powered illuminator projections—on a private banking body that operates in darkness and secrecy." Occupy activist Jane Smith described their purpose: “The Federal Reserve is owned entirely by Wall Street banks, so our money is issued by a private institution. Money should be created by the government as money, not interest bearing debt.“ See FedUp100.org

Arctic 30 Members Welcome Russian Amnesty, But Refuse to Apologize

Amidst international criticism of Russia’s human rights crackdown ahead of the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, the country’s parliament has approved a mass amnesty for as many as 22,000 prisoners. The move is officially meant to mark the 20th anniversary of the passage of Russia’s post-Soviet constitution. Among the tens of thousands set to be released are the Arctic 30, members of Greenpeace who were arrested in September after trying to stop Russian oil drilling in the Arctic. "We’re glad it happened, but we’re still wondering why we need to be amnestied for something we didn’t do," says Peter Willcox, who was the captain of the Arctic Sunrise and has worked with Greenpeace for decades. "According to the World Court, we were arrested illegally on the high seas, illegally brought into Russia, and illegally detained." Willcox joins us from St. Petersburg, Russia, along with Dimitri Litvinov, a Russian-born U.S. and Swedish citizen who has worked with Greenpeace since 1989.

Unprecedented Refugee March Sweeps Tel Aviv

On Saturday, December 21st, an unprecedented demonstration took place in Tel Aviv when thousands of African Asylum seekers marched through the city. The previous Sunday, a group of 150 refugees left the open-air prison Israel has newly constructed in the Negev Desert and began marching towards Jerusalem. After marching for two days through Be'er Sheva and spending the night in a small Kibbutz inspired by their actions, they made it to Jerusalem, only to be met with Israeli police. The new jail, called Holot, is the largest prison for refugees in the developed world, as The Real News' Lia Tarachansky reported in the past. Following international condemnation, the Israeli government decided to open the jail, saying it is not really a prison, however refugees must sign in three times a day and must remain there at night.

US Sends Two Guantanamo Detainees To Saudi Arabia

The Pentagon announced Sunday that it had transferred two detainees from the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the control of the government of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “As directed by the President’s Jan. 22, 2009, executive order, the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a comprehensive review of these cases. As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, these men were designated for transfer by consensus of the six departments and agencies comprising the task force. In accordance with congressionally-mandated reporting requirements, the administration informed Congress of its intent to transfer these individuals,” the Pentagon said in a statement The Pentagon also identified the transferred prisoners in the statement. Saad Muhammad Husayn Qahtani, 35, and Hamood Abdulla Hamood, 48, both of which were recommended for transfer in a 2009 review of their cases, have been moved by a US interagency task force as reported by the Qatari-owned Al Jazeera news network.

A Ton Of Coal Delivered By Santa To HSBC

HSBC shuts down following a santa invasion in central London Twenty-five Santa Claus activists delivered coal to HSBC the week before Christmas to tell them they've been a naughty bank this year because of their fossil fuel lending. Each piece of coal was donated by a member of the public, to demand HSBC stop bankrolling climate change, and in particular pull out of coal lending. Add your piece here http://wdm.li/18WcT62 The bank in Central London decided to close down as the coal was put into Christmas stockings and delivered to their front door. This is the first in an ongoing campaign to get HSBC to stop putting their money into the climate destroying, air and water polluting coal. Let's get something like this going in the US!

VIDEO: Urgent Message – Clean Up Abandoned Open Pit Uranium Mines

Throughout the West, particularly on tribal land, abandoned open pit uranium mines continue to emit radiation and toxic heavy metal dust into the air, land and water. These pit mines were created during the cold war frenzy when the Atomic Energy Commission stated that it would buy all of the uranium that could be mined. Corporations such as Kerr-McGee and Atlantic Richfield as well as local ranchers jumped on the chance to make money. When they were done, the pits were left behind with no remediation. The radiation and toxic heavy metals from the mine contaminate the food supply as livestock drink polluted water and plants grown in contaminated soil. People who live near the mines experience many health effects including high rates of cancer deaths and birth defects.

Military Spending, Banking, Austerity, TAFTA…Protested

The EU summit brought hundreds of protesters onto the streets of Brussels over a variety of causes – from austerity to food production and military policy. While European leaders talked about defence and banking rules aimed at protecting taxpayers, demonstrators complained the EU favours vested interests. “They are pursuing policies for big business, the big bosses, whereas we need all that money for the people. If we don’t fight we’ll be adopting the German model, where the situation of young people, having to work for little jobs, will always be precarious,” said Stephane, a student. Traffic was disrupted as some 50 organisations turned out to stage demonstrations. Anger was also directed at cost-cutting by Belgium in its new budget, and by other European governments. “What we see in countries with very strong austerity like in Greece, Portugal or in Spain, is that debt goes up, the deficit goes up, so does unemployment and the number of suicides. It’s economic poison,” said Felipe Van Keirsblick from the CNE trade union representing private sector employees.

Video: 2013 Person of the Year: Edward Snowden

It is with pride that I announce the Acronym TV person of the year is Edward Snowden. Edward Snowden opened up a Pandora’s box that cannot be closed. In the Christmas season, many parents of small children will find themselves humming the refrain “he see you when you’re sleeping and knows when your awake, he knows if you’ve been bad or good…” to keeps kids in line with the promise of toys under the tree. Adults, however, are now confronted with a reality that can no longer be dismissed as conspiracy theory paranoia: The NSA, for all intents and purposes, sees us when we sleep, and wake. The data, we are learning is being collected pre-emotively. Just in case. The list of things we know from the Snowden leaks are still evolving; more is said to come. Here is a quick rundown of what we know now: The NSA . . .

VIDEO: Protesters Demand Peoples Budget: “We Are Hungry”

Only hours before Paul Ryan and Patty Murray announced that they reached a two year budget agreement (The BiPartisan Budget Act of 2013), representatives from a broad coalition demanding a budget that would cut military expenditures in order to increase funding for a wide range of domestic programs called on Congressional leaders to craft a budget for people, peace and the planet. Now, because this broad coalition included over a hundred peace, anti-hunger, anti-poverty, environmental and community groups it is almost universally ignored within the walls of Congress. That is one reason why part of that call came in the form of an unscheduled visit to the office of Paul Ryan and Patty Murray.

VIDEO: The Pathology Of The Rich

Because we don't understand the pathology of the rich. We've been saturated with cultural images and a kind of cultural deification of wealth and those who have wealth. We are being--you know, they present people of immense wealth as somehow leaders--oracles, even. And we don't grasp internally what it is an oligarchic class is finally about or how venal and morally bankrupt they are. We need to recover the language of class warfare and grasp what is happening to us, and we need to shatter this self-delusion that somehow if, as Obama says, we work hard enough and study hard enough, we can be one of them. The fact is, the people who created the economic mess that we're in were the best-educated people in the country--Larry Summers, a former president of Harvard, and others. The issue is not education. The issue is greed.

The Farmery: Grow Food & Buy Food At The Same Place

Meet Ben Greene. He’s a student turned entrepreneur from Raleigh, NC. His brain child, The Farmery, promises to bring a whole new way of life to urban locavores. “The Farmery is essentially a template to celebrate local foods,” Greene says. “There’s not really a grocery mall designed for urban communities. We make it available to different demographics.” The idea is relatively simple: bring vegetable production, harvest and distribution together in a single location, right in the middle of town. A modified farmer’s market, The Farmery eliminates the middle man and brings fresh-picked produce almost directly to the consumer’s doorstep. “The Farmery could be potentially much more financially successful (than other urban farms) and make its way into the mainstream of our economy,” claims Greene. “By growing and selling in the same place, you can get a much higher profit margin.” The Farmery is constructed primarily from repurposed shipping containers and greenhouse implements. Hanging from the outside of the containers, herbs, strawberries and greens are grown aquaponically. Aquaponics refers to the practice of raising fish in the water supply to provide nutrients and keep disease in check.

Free Reverend Billy

The following were the words spoken by Reverend Billy (in the video above) that might have gotten him up to a year in jail time, if we do not act. We are in the midst of a mass extinction at this time. I ask you to think of your own children. I am the father of a three year old and I’m worried about the kind of world that my daughter will inherit. Please protect life, protect the earth. Take your money out of J.P. Morgan Chase or work inside the bank to change the values system of this bank. It is the largest bank in the United States by assets, but it is also the top bank in the world for financing industrial projects which poison the atmosphere with co2 emissions. Who caused Hurricane Sandy? Chase bank did, if anybody did. Rise up against the corporations that are poisoning the atmosphere. It’s up to you and to me, only we can do it.

VIDEO: To Honor Nelson Mandela’s Legacy, We Must … (?)

Resistance Report #14: Mandela, activist working with Stratfor, fast food workers walks out and update on Iran Reflecting on the death of Nelson Mandela, Jerome Roos, writing at Roar magazine states: “The only appropriate way to honor the legacy of the iconic freedom fighter is not to beatify the man but to take his struggle to its logical conclusion.” The finality of death, combined with the human need for a neat linear narrative, will work against placing Mandela’s impact on a continuum. For, while it may be true that the arc of the moral universe is long, but bends towards justice – that bending is still not happening for too many in South Africa, and the world over.
