Despite Biden’s Promise To Protect Old Forests, His Administration Keeps Approving Plans To Cut Them Down

On Earth Day in 2022, President Joe Biden stood among cherry blossoms and towering Douglas firs in a Seattle park to declare the importance of big, old trees. “There used to be a hell of a lot more forests like this,” he said, calling them “our planet’s lungs” and extolling their power to fight climate change. The amount of carbon trees suck out of the air increases dramatically with age, making older trees especially important. These trees are also rare: Less than 10% of forests in the lower 48 states remain unlogged or undisturbed by development. The president uncapped his pen, preparing to sign an executive order to protect mature and old-growth forests on federal lands. “I just think this is the beginning of a new day,” Biden said.

Liberal Arrogance And Hatred On Display After Trump Victory

While every Trump utterance is examined for proof of racism and other forms of bigotry, liberals suddenly became very illiberal after the campaign ended. Many of them literally wished death upon Black men, Latino men, Arabs and anyone they hold responsible for Trump’s return to the white house. The white people who still form the base of his support are somehow exempt from these attacks. While disturbing, these behaviors are not entirely unexpected. Instead of telling their voters how a Harris administration would benefit their lives, her campaign engaged in a propaganda effort, amplifying former Trump officials to attest to his fascist beliefs or resuscitating old stories about his alleged affinity for Hitler and Nazi ideology .

Pro-Palestinian Non-Profit Killer Bill Up For Another Vote This Week

While the first version of H. R. 9495 targeting pro-Palestinian nonprofits was defeated in the US House of Representatives on November 12 with 256 voting in favor the bill and 145 opposed, this week the bill will be brought back under a procedural ploy in which only a simple majority is needed to pass the bill instead of the 2/3rds majority needed last week. The following members of the House of Representatives voted for the resolution and should be contacted by their constituents. The legislation would take away the tax exempt status from nonprofit organizations by designating them as “terrorist supporting organizations“.

The High Cost Of Empire: US Weapons Depletion Fuels Concerns

As the United States channels tens of billions of dollars into wars in Palestine and Ukraine, data reveals a concerning depletion in its missile production capacity. Critics argue that the primary beneficiaries are weapons manufacturers, not American security. Since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, U.S. defense companies have significantly outperformed major stock indexes. RTX, which produces the 2,000-pound bunker-busting bombs used by Israel in Gaza, outpaced the S&P 500 by roughly 46 percent. In 2023, U.S. weapons sales to foreign governments surged 16% to a record $238 billion, as defense contractors report unprecedented demand and growing backlogs.

US Warships Pull Back From Yemeni Waters After ‘Shocking’ Attacks

The USS Nicholson warship has been repositioned away from Yemen after suffering a recent attack by the Ansarallah movement, Al-Akhbar newspaper reported on 15 November, a day after Yemeni resistance leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi confirmed that the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier was forced to do the same. “The Nicholson [vessel] was towed towards the Pacific Ocean after being attacked … Its repositioning will not prevent it from being targeted [again] if it is used to carry out hostile acts against Yemen,” Al-Akhbar cited informed military sources in Sanaa as saying.

A Blueprint For Health Policy In The Second Trump Administration

The 2024 election of Donald Trump as president of the United States has worried many, with the question of health as one of the primary concerns. Health professionals fear the damage a second Trump presidency will have on access to healthcare and on the health of marginalized populations. These concerns include leadership of governmental health agencies, access to insurance, and restrictions on reproductive health and gender affirming care. One of the gravest concerns is the figure of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s (RFK Jr.) and what his role in public health policy will be in his quest to “Make America Healthy Again”.

Medicare ‘Advantage’ By The Numbers

The quasi-privatized system called “Medicare Advantage,” otherwise known as Part C, was created in 2003 as a means of expanding the role of private sector corporations in the publicly-funded Medicare system. Proponents claimed it would lower costs and improve health care for seniors. It has achieved neither of those goals; instead, MA has become a wildly profitable scheme for private insurance giants, who have become adept at taking advantage of Medicare’s billing model to claim exorbitant profits. At this point, MA is more profitable for many companies than their conventional insurance businesses.

Swimming In Mud In The Fifth Circle Of Hell

In January 2025, Donald Trump – who has cultivated a politics of anger that is not uncommon in our world – will be inaugurated for his second term as the president of the United States. Such a politics of anger is present in many countries, including across Europe – which otherwise sees itself as somehow above the brutal emotions and as a continent of reason. There is a temptation amongst liberals to characterise this politics of anger as fascism, but this is not accurate. Trump and his political confraternity across the world (from Giorgia Meloni in Italy to Javier Milei in Argentina) do not advertise themselves as fascists, nor do they wear the same emblems or use the same rhetoric.

Implications Of A Second Trump Term For Working Class And Oppressed

In the immediate aftermath of the media calling the elections in favor of the Trump-Vance ticket, African Americans in various states across the U.S. received text messages ordering them to report to plantations to resume the slave labor which was the bulwark of colonial and antebellum periods of North American history. This particular attempt at intimidation was chosen for obvious reasons. In the U.S., it would take a Civil War between 1861 and 1865 to destroy the structural basis for African enslavement. Later at the conclusion of 1865, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified nearly three years after the Emancipation Proclamation issued by then-President Abraham Lincoln.

Will Gabbard Be Able To Direct The Intelligence ‘Community’?

President-elect Donald Trump’s selection of Tulsi Gabbard to be director of national intelligence (DNI) will cause shockwaves in and among the 18 fiefdoms that now comprise the U.S. intelligence community. Gabbard will be fighting an uphill battle if she tries to herd those 18 cats into a cohesive whole and restore integrity to intelligence analysis. The hill’s incline will be still steeper, if she takes seriously her duty to warn the president of the frequently noxious blowback of C.I.A. covert actions. I cannot overcome the urge to quote from “The Princess Bride”: Good luck stormin’ the castle, Tulsi … It will take a miracle!

US House Defeats Bill Targeting Pro-Palestine Non-Profits

On November 12, a bill that could have given the US government, in particular the presidency, sweeping powers to target pro-Palestine organizations failed to pass the US House of Representatives. Although 256 representatives voted in favor of the bill, and 145 opposed, H.R. 9495, titled the “Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act” required two thirds of the House to pass, which it did not receive. The bill, which would have stripped the tax-exempt status from nonprofit organizations designated as “terrorist supporting organizations” and raised significant alarm within the Palestine solidarity movement, has been defeated for now.

Israel’s Genocide Day 404: Israel Is Committing Ethnic Cleansing

Israel is committing “systematic,” “widespread” displacement of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip, the international human rights group, Human Rights Watch, said in a report on Wednesday. According to the report, Israel’s actions may amount to a crime against humanity. The group dismissed Israeli claims about Palestinian fighters hiding among civilians, and said that “There is no plausible imperative military reason to justify Israel’s mass displacement of nearly all of Gaza’s population, often multiple times,” indicating that “from the first days of the hostilities, senior officials in the Israeli government and the war cabinet have declared their intent to displace the Palestinian population of Gaza.”

Short On Troops, Israel Turns To Mercenaries

Facing increasing domestic pressure to reveal the true extent of their military losses in Gaza and Lebanon, Israeli officials have released figures that are likely to only reveal minimal numbers. The data claims that since the beginning of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October 2023, around 12,000 soldiers and officers have been injured or forced into rehabilitation under the occupation state’s Ministry of Defense. This includes 910 wounded during what Israel calls a "limited ground maneuver" launched by Tel Aviv on the Lebanese border, in addition to the deaths of over 760 officers and soldiers and 140 left completely disabled.

Trump Reelection Looms Over COP29; Climate Conference Disappoints

For decades, making progress on global climate action has felt like trying to tunnel through a mountain with only a spoon and some elbow grease. When people suggest alternative tools that are perhaps better equipped for tunnel-digging, or maybe even float the idea of climbing over the mountain, they’re dismissed and demeaned as too idealistic. Other people will stare straight at the mountain and declare that it doesn’t exist. And some other people think that instead of creating the tunnel, we should just strip the mountain, sell the tinder and build a casino on top. Meanwhile, the mountain is growing. And the spoon is broken.

The World Bank Must Stop Ploughing Funds Into Factory Farming

Animal agriculture is one of the leading drivers of the climate crisis. According to a recent World Bank report, food and agriculture generate almost a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, of which meat and dairy account for nearly 60 percent. Separate analysis shows that cattle ranching accounts for around 70 percent of the current deforestation of the Amazon. Recognising the significant problems that animal-based foods are causing, the World Bank’s cafeteria stopped serving meat earlier this year.
