Medicaid Cuts Will Devastate People With Disabilities

Two months ago, Sloan Meek – a disability rights advocate with cerebral palsy – took the stage at a rally protesting the Medicaid cuts in Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.” Meek warned how $1 trillion dollars in Medicaid cuts would have life-threatening consequences for people with disabilities.  “My whole life – not just my healthcare – is supported by Medicaid. The way I move around in the world. The way I communicate. The people who help me do all the things I want to do in my life,” Meek said. “Without Medicaid support, I will be forced into a nursing home to spend the rest of my life in a hospital bed.”  The Republican budget is a “death threat” to people with disabilities, Meek said.

Washington Prepares For Troop Withdrawal From Baghdad

The US army is preparing to start withdrawing troops from several sites in Iraq, including in the capital Baghdad, and will relocate them to the northern city of Erbil in the country’s autonomous Kurdistan region, according to Al-Sumeriya. An Iraqi government source told the outlet on 17 August that "the international coalition will withdraw from Ain al-Assad base, Baghdad airport, and the Joint Operations Command toward the city of Erbil." The source added that "the withdrawal of coalition forces will take place in September, in implementation of the agreement between Baghdad and Washington," noting that "the military trainers will remain in the country and have nothing to do with the withdrawal of international coalition forces."

Mercenary Boss Erik Prince’s Private Army Moves Into Haiti

In the coming weeks, hundreds of militants from the US, Europe, and El Salvador are expected to be deployed to Haiti to allegedly confront the country’s gangs as part of a mission overseen by Erik Prince, the controversial founder of the mercenary organization Blackwater and a known supporter of US President Donald Trump. According to Reuters, Erik Prince’s new security firm, Vectus Global, which has been operating in Haiti since March amid escalating violence in the country, is gearing up to expand its operations in an alleged effort to assist local authorities in reclaiming critical roads and territories from heavily armed criminal groups that have long held control over them.

Washington DC Wakes Up Packed With Federal Agents And National Guard

Since Wednesday night, hundreds of federal agents and National Guard members have been patrolling the streets of Washington, D.C., after President Donald Trump placed the city’s police under federal control. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) set up checkpoints in several areas of the city and increased patrols in shifts covering 24 hours a day. On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said 19 agencies were part of a task force created by Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Trump Occupying DC: Washington Post Used To Be Disgusted

President Donald Trump has now put troops on the District of Columbia’s streets in both of his terms. This time around, the Washington Post is less alarmed. In addition to calling up 800 DC National Guard troops—which Trump can do because DC isn’t a state—he also seized control of DC’s police force in the name of a “crime emergency,” despite the city experiencing its lowest violent crime rate in 30 years. With DC’s self-governance under threat, the city’s paper of record is positioned to play a critical role. Right off the bat, Washington Post columnist Marc Fisher sounded the alarm about Trump’s actions, telling the New Yorker (8/11/25), “This is troops-in-the-streets, shades-of-authoritarian-rule bad.”

Trump Is Sending Thousands Of Troops To Latin America

The Department of Defense has ordered the deployment of air and naval forces to the southern Caribbean Sea. On August 15, CNN reported that Trump is deploying 4,000 U.S. sailors and Marines to Latin America, and that various military assets are being allocated to the U.S. Southern Command including a nuclear-powered attack submarine, several destroyers, and a guided missile cruiser.  This operation comes after Donald Trump secretly signed an order last week directing the Pentagon to use the armed forces in the supposed “fight against drug cartels” in countries where groups declared “terrorist” exist, such as in Mexico, Haiti, El Salvador, and Venezuela. The operation was confirmed by Secretary of State and National Security Advisor, Marco Rubio.

United Kingdom Endorses Moroccan Control Of Western Sahara

In June, just weeks before home secretary Yvette Cooper proscribed Palestine Action as a terrorist group, the UK government reversed longstanding policy by endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan over Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony that has been under illegal occupation for 50 years. In a joint communique signed by foreign secretary David Lammy and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, the UK said the 2007 autonomy plan – which gives the indigenous Sahrawis self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty – was “the most credible, viable and pragmatic basis” to end the years-long conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front, the political-military movement representing the Sahrawi people.

Cop City Defendant Has Domestic Terrorism Charge Dropped

Atlanta, GA – Jamie Marsicano, one of dozens of defendants embroiled in the sprawling legal backlash brought against opponents of “Cop City,” had a state-level Domestic Terrorism charge dropped in DeKalb County on Thursday. The dismissal represents the latest in a series of legal setbacks for the state as it moves forward with its expansive effort to prosecute those who mobilized to stop Cop City, a massive police training compound south of metro Atlanta in the South River Forest. More than 29 months after Jamie was arrested and charged under Georgia’s domestic terrorism statute for their participation in the movement against Cop City, the state hadn’t brought an indictment against the North Carolina resident, leaving them in limbo as they waited for a decision from the court regarding their charge and potential trial.

Thomas Sankara’s Legacy Is Alive In The Sahel

In the months after the 1987 coup in Burkina Faso that killed President Thomas Sankara, screen printers in the capital, Ouagadougou, began to churn out shirts with Sankara’s face on them. The image soon spread throughout the country. Blaise Compaoré, Sankara’s former minister of justice, went on to rule the country until 2014. He was suspected from the outset of orchestrating Sankara’s murder, but it would take the Burkinabé courts until 2021–2022 to find him guilty. By then, he had long fled to Côte d’Ivoire, where he remains a fugitive. Throughout his time in office, Compaoré claimed to be a follower of Sankara – a political legacy he could not afford to disavow.

Some Thoughts On The Trump-Putin Summit

After reading some 20+ pieces about the upcoming Trump-Putin talks I still have no idea of what the outcome might be. Trump's uttering about the talks and Ukraine are, as usually, all over the place. There seems to be some agreements already between the parties. If it were not so there would be no summit. The Russian side is aiming at much more than Ukraine. The size and high ranks of its delegation is otherwise unexplained: The Kremlin aide noted the very high level of the Russian delegation, which he said would include Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Ushakov himself, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev, who has been a key figure in the Ukraine settlement process. “In addition to the presidents, five members from each delegation will participate in the negotiations,” he said, adding that “of course, a group of experts will also be nearby.”

He Who Pays The Piper Calls The Tune

In theory, the fundamental premise of American democracy is “one man (or person), one vote.”  Under the original concept of Jeffersonian Democracy, in most states access to the franchise was limited to White males who owned at least a fifty-acre plot of land. Towards the end of the 18th century and early into the 19th century, states began lifting the property and education requirements for White males. African Americans were legally granted the right to vote with the ratification of the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1870.  Women were granted the right to vote with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.

Columbia Tries To Undermine Its Unions, Hire Scab Instructors

Imagine you get a letter from your manager a week before you are set to teach classes, removing you from teaching duties but saying you’ll get paid anyway. This odd experience has happened to around 137 graduate students at Columbia University in New York City who teach core curriculum, language, and writing classes. They are members of Student Workers of Columbia (SWC), Auto Workers Local 2710. Getting paid to not teach might sound pretty good, but in fact the university is hiring adjuncts with no union contract to do the work of union members. “I spent all summer not knowing if I was going to teach or not, and then they finally were like, ‘No, your class is canceled,’” said a core curriculum teacher who asked not to be named.

US-Based Companies Announce Record Number Of Impending Layoffs

Companies based in the U.S. announced in July that they plan to eliminate a record number of jobs, more than double the amount announced in the same month last year, according to a new report. The report, from recruitment firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, tracks U.S.-based employers’ announcements about layoffs, which do not indicate the number of job losses that have occurred or when the positions will be eliminated. The estimates can change based on a variety of factors, including, in the case of government layoffs, litigation, explained Gbenga Ajilore, chief economist at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. “These are job cut announcements versus actual people losing a job,” Ajilore told Truthout.

Twenty-Four US-Allied Nations Urge Israel To Lift All Restrictions On Aid

Twenty-four US-allied nations and three senior EU officials have signed a joint statement calling for Israel to lift all restrictions on aid entering the Gaza Strip, warning that the Israeli-imposed famine has reached “unimaginable levels.” The statement, published by the British Foreign Ministry, comes as Palestinians continue to starve to death every day in Gaza due to the US-backed Israeli blockade. “The humanitarian suffering in Gaza has reached unimaginable levels. Famine is unfolding before our eyes. Urgent action is needed now to halt and reverse starvation. Humanitarian space must be protected, and aid should never be politicized,” the statement reads.

Starving Indigenous Peoples Then And Now

There is increasing evidence that “widespread starvation, malnutrition and disease” are driving a rise in hunger-related deaths“ in Gaza, a group of United Nations and aid organizations have repeatedly warned. A July 29 alert by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a global initiative for improving food security and nutrition, reported that the “worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip,” as access to food and other essential items is dropping to an “unprecedented level.” More than 500,000 Palestinians, one-fourth of Gaza’s population, are experiencing famine, the U.N. stated. And all 320,000 children under age 5 are “at risk of acute malnutrition, with serious lifelong physical and mental health consequences.”
