The ‘Disappearing’ War Chat

In his article about being invited by U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz to a Signal chat with the U.S. secretaries of state, defense and treasury, the U.S. vice president and the directors of national intelligence and the C.I.A., Atlantic magazine editor Jeffrey Goldberg writes that Waltz set at least some of the text messages in the chat to disappear. Goldberg wrote: Waltz set some of the messages in the Signal group to disappear after one week, and some after four. That raises questions about whether the officials may have violated federal records law: Text messages about official acts are considered records that should be preserved.

In Occupied Port-Au-Prince Over One Million Haitians Have Been Displaced

As our rights are under attack by an arrogant clique of billionaires at home, the global beacon of freedom, Haiti, confronts one of the toughest moments in its centuries-long liberation struggle. For over four years now, burgeoning paramilitary gangs have waged a war on the 2.5 million people of Port-au-Prince. Last year, the disparate paramilitaries confederated into the Viv Ansanm gang under the leadership of former police officer turned warlord, Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier. In front of our eyes, the robust capital city of the world-famous carnival, of bustling commerce and proud traditions has been reduced to a city of refugees, shelters and isolated, hold-out communities resisting with everything they have.

Trump Launches ‘October 7 Joint Task Force’; War On Palestine Protesters

Last week the Trump administration announced the formation of a joint task force that it said is meant to hold Hamas leaders accountable for the October 7 attack. But many fear it will be yet another weapon the administration will use to target activists within the United States. The Joint Task Force October 7 (JTF 10-7) will “investigate acts of terrorism and civil rights violations by individuals and entities providing support and financing to Hamas, related Iran proxies, and their affiliates” which is similar to work that began under the Biden administration. The new task force however is also targeting “acts of antisemitism by these groups,” which the administration has indicated refers to campus activism for Palestine.

What We Know About The Tufts University Student Kidnapped By ICE

A Tufts University student is being held at an ICE detention facility in Louisiana, and there are growing questions about how she was taken into custody and the timeline of sending her out of state. One major issue is whether federal authorities defied the court order to keep Rumeysa Ozturk in Massachusetts, as it was issued just hours after her arrest Tuesday night. Video shows Ozturk, a Tufts University PhD student from Turkey, screaming as plain-clothes agents surrounded her and grabbed her on a Somerville sidewalk just off campus before taking her away.

El Tren De Aragua: The Defunct Venezuelan Band

Until the designation as a “transnational criminal organization” by the US in 2024, the course of the now-disbanded group was narrated by a network of US think tanks, media and funds that constructed a discourse against the Bolivarian Revolution. This construction currently serves to justify sanctions, carry out mass deportations and feed the false idea of a failed state in Venezuela. In July 2024, when the US Treasury Department included Tren de Aragua on its list of transnational criminal organizations, it equated it with cartels such as Sinaloa or Jalisco Nueva Generación, which have a presence in more than 100 countries and have more than 45,000 members, associates and facilitators.

Senate Hearing On Global Threats Turns Into A McCarthy Hearing

Today, in the US Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on global threats with the five heads of intelligence agencies of the US government, Senator Tom Cotton, accused on national TV a group I have worked with for over 20 years, CODEPINK: Women for Peace, of being funded by the Communist Party of China. During the hearing CODEPINK activist Tighe Barry stood up following the presentation of the Director of National Security Tulsi Gabbard’s lengthy statement about global threats to US national security and yelled ‘Stop Funding Israel,’ since neither Intelligence Committee Chair Tom Cotton and Vice Chair Mark Warner had mentioned Israel in their opening statement nor  had Gabbard mentioned the Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza in her statement either.

What Comes After Globalization?

Donald Trump is back in power, and, to put it mildly, he’s no fan of globalization. The president has publicly “rejected globalism and embraced patriotism” and said that “it’s left millions and millions of our workers with nothing but poverty and heartache.” To better understand the current era of globalization that he’s trying to bring to an end and its track record, it’s useful to compare it with the globalization that took place between 1870 and the outbreak of World War I. Both globalizations represent pivotal periods — watershed years that shaped today’s world. And both saw the largest expansions of global economic output to date.

The Far-Right Hate Group Helping Trump Deport Israel’s Critics

A far-right, pro-Israel group with a history of support for terror and genocide is working closely with the Trump administration, preparing dossiers on thousands of pro-Palestine figures it wants deported from the United States. Betar U.S. is known to have had several meetings with senior government officials and has claimed credit for the arrest and detention of Mahmoud Khalil, a leader of the nationwide anti-genocide student demonstrations that began at Columbia University last year. Ross Glick, the group’s executive director until last month, noted that he met with a diverse set of influential lawmakers, including Democratic senator John Fetterman and aides to the Republican senators Ted Cruz and James Lankford.

United Kingdom’s Secret Meeting With Top Israeli Arms Firm

Keir Starmer’s government held a private meeting with Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest weapons company, Declassified has found. The meeting occurred in December 2024 and was attended by three representatives from Elbit Systems and three officials from Yvette Cooper’s Home Office. It took place months after Israeli forces used an Elbit drone to kill three British military veterans in Gaza who were protecting a humanitarian aid convoy. The revelation comes in documents obtained by Declassified through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the Home Office, which refused to detail which officials were present or what was discussed.

HTS-Israeli Campaign To Eliminate Syria’s Engineers And Scientists

On 27 November 2024, militants from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former Al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, launched a lighting assault on Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city. Amid the chaos, Armenian born professor Yervant Arslanian was assassinated by a suspected HTS sniper while attempting to flee the assault. Arslanian had previously worked in Italy on weapons systems and was chief of the Syrian advanced weapons research design team at the Arab School of Science and Technology in Aleppo at the time of his death. Following the assassination, Syrian-Armenian journalist Kevork Almassian speculated that HTS was not acting alone.

Chris Hedges: Surrendering To Authoritarianism

I was not surprised when Columbia University’s interim president Katrina Armstrong caved to the demands of the Trump administration. She agreed to ban face masks or face coverings, prohibit protests in academic buildings and create an internal security force of 36 New York City Police officers empowered to “remove individuals from campus and/or arrest them when appropriate.” She has also surrendered the autonomy of academic departments, as demanded by the Trump administration, by appointing a new senior vice provost to “review” the university’s department of Middle East, South Asian and African Studies and the Center for Palestine Studies.

Chaos Under Heaven: South Korea’s Deepening Political Debacle

Morse Tan, a high-ranking former US State Dept. official, recently let the cat out of the bag on the US ruling elite position on South Korea's Martial Law.  He declared that "Yoon declared Martial Law to preserve South Korea's Democracy".  Having previously labeled South Korea a model democracy, this is a No-Scotsman-move taken to absurdity.   Now Tan is not a current US government official, but he is an indicator of what the US national security state is thinking, in particular, what its neocon wing is thinking.  Tan also recently claimed that "the impeachment against Yoon is an insurrection" led by opposition party leader Lee Jae Myung "who wants to turn the country over to the Chinese communists".

Oscar-Winning Palestinian Filmmaker ‘Lynched’ By Israeli Settlers

Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the Academy Award-winning documentary film ‘No Other Land,’ was beaten and injured by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank on 24 March before being arrested by Israeli security forces. “A group of settlers just lynched Hamdan Ballal … They beat him, and he has injuries in his head and stomach, bleeding. Soldiers invaded the ambulance he called and took him. No sign of him since,” Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham announced via social media. Dozens of extremist Jewish settlers descended on the Palestinian village of Susiya in the Masafer Yatta area of Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank on Monday night, destroying property and attacking civilians, according to the activist group Center for Jewish Nonviolence.

Ukraine Guilty Of Human Rights Violations In Trade Union Massacre

The European Court of Human Rights has found the Ukrainian government guilty of committing human rights violations during the May 2, 2014 Odessa massacre, in which dozens of Russian-speaking demonstrators were forced into the city’s Trade Unions House and burned alive by ultranationalist thugs. Citing the “relevant authorities’ failure to do everything that could reasonably be expected of them to prevent the violence in Odessa,” the court ruled unanimously that Ukraine violated Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees the right to life.

Could Elon Musk Actually Destroy Social Security As We Know It?

Why is Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, hyperventilating about Social Security? Why is he inventing unhinged tales about “fraudulent” hordes of Social Security grifters? Why is his “DOGE” chopping away staffers at the already understaffed Social Security Administration? Let’s start with the political reality that most Americans see Social Security as absolutely essential to their future financial security. These average Americans, Musk and his like-minded super wealthy fear, are eventually going to start demanding that America’s rich pay a far bigger share of the revenue Social Security so desperately needs.
