Apartheid

The Hidden Story Of Britain’s Anti-Apartheid Militants

At an East London cinema last summer, several dozen people in their late sixties and early seventies took to the stage. After being beckoned forwards by the compere, the veteran South African revolutionary Ronnie Kasrils, the shying group of mostly retirees received repeated standing ovations from loved ones, politicians, and diplomats filling out the private screening. Afterward, they chatted at the cinema bar and signed pamphlets and books, while their proud children and grandchildren took selfies with the actors who had portrayed their family members in the film they had just enjoyed.

Oxford Union Declares Israel An ‘Apartheid State Responsible For Genocide’

The prestigious Oxford Union voted by an overwhelming majority that Israel is an "apartheid state responsible for genocide" at a fiery event in which the society's president denounced Israel's war on Gaza as a "holocaust", and a pro-Israel speaker was ejected from the debating chamber. The exclusive debating society, founded in 1823, held an unprecedented debate on Thursday night on the motion: "This house believes Israel is an apartheid state responsible for genocide". The motion was carried with a thumping majority of 278 to 59. The packed debate on Thursday evening, observed by Middle East Eye and largely attended by Oxford students, was often raucous and heated, with nearly every speaker interrupted several times by students raising objections.

A Free State Of Palestine Is Inevitable; How Many Must Die First?

October 7, 2024 marks the first anniversary of the launch of Operation Al Aqsa Flood when members of the Palestinian resistance movement broke out of Gaza, known as the world's largest open air prison. The occupying state of Israel responded with a genocidal attack on Gaza that has since spread to the West Bank, Lebanon and other countries in the region that are acting in solidarity with Palestine. Clearing the FOG speaks with activist and author Miko Peled about the goals of Israel, what is happening in Palestine and West Asia and his new project, the Palestine House of Freedom, in Washington, DC. The ICJ Finds That BDS Is Not Merely A Right, But An Obligation

Israel and its lobby have, for years now, been engaged in a frenzy of activity to further insulate Israel from accountability by using their influence in the West to effectively outlaw organized opposition to Israel. Foremost among these efforts has been the Israeli campaign to penalize calls to boycott, divest from, and sanction Israel for its gross violations of human rights. As a result, countless laws and policies are now on the books across the U.S. and the broader West, trampling on core constitutional principles and internationally guaranteed human rights in defense of Israeli impunity. But an advisory opinion issued last month by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) should help to turn that around.

World Court Opinion On Illegal Israeli Occupation Gives Tools To End Genocide

On July 18, 2024, the World Court (aka the International Court of Justice) issued an advisory opinion that found Israel to be an illegal occupation of Palestine and that the settlements must be dismantled, Palestinians must be allowed to return to their homes and they must be paid reparations. International human rights lawyer Francis Boyle talks to Clearing the FOG about how the court's opinion came about, what it means and how it can be used by activists in their communities to end the genocide in Palestine. Boyle explains why now is the time to escalate our actions and end the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine.

Tourism Giants Illegally Enrich Israeli Settlements On Stolen Land

On 23 May, Netherlands-based European Legal Support Centre (ELSC) reportedly filed a criminal complaint against Booking.com in Holland. The company, known for providing short- and long-term vacation booking services, is accused of money laundering linked to Israeli war crimes and profiteering from the occupation state’s illegal settlement expansion projects. Booking.com is alleged to advertise accommodations and “experiences” in illegally occupied Palestinian territories. The complaint highlights Booking.com’s alleged complicity in Israeli genocide, as detailed in a report by Don’t Buy Into Occupation (DBIO), a coalition of 25 European and Palestinian NGOs, including the ELSC.

My Heart Makes My Head Swim

The title of this newsletter, ‘My heart makes my head swim’, comes from Frantz Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks (1952). In a chapter called ‘The Fact of Blackness’, Fanon writes about the despair that racism produces, the immense anxiety about living in a world that has decided that certain people are simply not human or not sufficiently human. The lives of these people, children of a lesser god, are assigned less worth than the lives of the powerful and the propertied. An international division of humanity tears the world into pieces, throwing masses of people into the fires of anguish and oblivion. What is happening in Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city, is ghastly.

Documentary – Automated Apartheid: Walking Through Hebron Smart City

A silent sentinel watches over every corner in the bustling streets of Hebron, the largest city in the West Bank, where the ancient echoes of history collide with the modern hum of daily life. This sentinel is not a person but a network of surveillance technology known ominously as the “Hebron Smart City.” Designed by Israeli authorities, this system blankets the city in a web of cameras, sensors and even automated weapons, tracking every movement of its Palestinian residents. “Palestinians in Hebron are the most surveilled people on the planet,” explains journalist and activist Mnar Adley, highlighting the omnipresence of cameras and face-scanning technology.

‘Occupation’s Nightmare’ Continues Despite Jordanian Crackdown

Since the recent war on Gaza was launched by the Israeli occupation forces in October 2023, Jordan has witnessed mass protests across the country. Such protests are not unusual for the Jordanian people in spite of their government’s compromising stance on the Israeli entity. Jordanians have taken to the streets for decades in protest over the Israel-Jordan Peace treaty, also known as “Wadi Araba”, that was signed in 1994. “‘Wadi Araba’ is not peace, ‘Wadi Araba’ is surrender, has been chanted by Jordanians for around 30 years.

2009 US Policy Paper Planned Current Israeli-Iranian Tensions

Since October 7, 2023 it would appear a spontaneous chain of events is leading the Middle East deeper and deeper into conflict. From Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza to its strikes on Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and repeated strikes across Syria (including the recent strike on Iran’s embassy in Damascus), to the ongoing US-led confrontation with Yemen in the Red Sea, it would appear that poor diplomacy is failing to prevent escalation and is instead leading to mounting tensions and a growing potential for wider war.

Israel Didn’t Even Try To Defend The Legality Of Its Occupation

For six days, more than 50 countries, the League of Arab States, the African Union and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation presented testimony to the International Court of Justice (ICJ, or World Court) about the legality of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory. The overwhelming majority of them, largely from the Global South, told the court that the occupation was illegal. The historic hearing, which took place February 19-26, was held in response to the United Nations General Assembly’s December 30, 2022, request for an advisory opinion on the following questions...

No Aloha In Governor Of Hawaii’s ‘Strategic Partnership’ With Israel

On February 29, 2024, fifteen organizations in Hawaii at a press conference at the Hawaii State Capitol called for Hawaii governor Josh Green to terminate any relationship the State of Hawaii has with Israel citing the Israeli genocide being conducted in Gaza. On the day of the press conference, Israeli military killed 107 and wounded over 700 starving Palestinians that were attempting to get food for their families from food relief trucks. Over 30,000 Palestinians have been killed and 70,000 wounded in the 145 day Israeli attack and siege of Gaza.

Palestine Tells Top UN Court Israel’s Occupation Is Illegal

Acquisition of territory by force, persecution, racial discrimination and apartheid, denial of self-determination – these are the crimes Israel has committed against the Palestinian people, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told the International Court of Justice this morning, in the Dutch administrative capital, The Hague, on the first day of Advisory Opinion hearings on the legality of Israel’s prolonged occupation of the Palestinian territories. “For over a century, the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination has been denied and violated – their very existence negated,” al-Maliki told the court, flanked by Palestine’s 25-member delegation, many of them draped in keffiyehs.

Yearning Waves: A Palestinian’s Tale Of Dreams And The Stolen Sea

When I saw that there was a vast sea to the west of Palestine, my imagination began weaving beautiful dreams and thoughts of visiting the sea, playing on the beach, and swimming in its waters. Even at that young age, I understood that there was an Israeli occupation, and this occupation claimed a significant portion of Palestine. However, as a child, I reassured myself, thinking, “The sea is vast, too vast. I don’t believe the occupier can take all of this sea and leave us with nothing!” As I grew older, I realized that these were just dreams that became impossible to fulfill.

Roger Waters: ‘2023 Has Been One Of The Most Dangerous Years Ever’

Roger Waters and Vijay Prashad reflect on the major developments of 2023 which they term one of the worst years in the history of humanity due to Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. Waters spent several months of this year touring Europe and the Americas in his “This is Not a Drill” tour and was met with backlash from the right-wing and zionist lobbies in most countries.
