France: ‘We will NOT Let The US Be Policeman Of The World’

The comments were made by Bruno Le Maire, French economy minister, during an interview with the Financial Times. He claimed: “Europe refuses to allow the US to be the trade policeman of the world.” President Trump pulled the US out of the nuclear deal Mr Obama signed with Iran in 2015 and has reimposed a range of economic sanctions. He has repeatedly threatened punitive action against any European companies which ignore these sanctions and continue doing business with Iran. Mr Le Maire argued the US measures threaten the EU’s “economic sovereignty” and urged the bloc to “affirm our independence”.

European Integration And The Strategic Perspectives Of The Radical Left

We all are committed to the values of internationalism and solidarity. Irrespectively of the concrete positions which our member/observer organisations take regarding the historically defined process of European integration we reject the simple-minded ideas, which use migrants and refugees as scape goats for precariousness, housing shortage or the decline of the welfare state. We oppose the ‘securitisation’ of domestic policies and the militarization of the EU boarders. Some of us may employ the notion ‘cosmopolitism’ to label their convictions, and others not. However, it is not fathomable how the crucial global problems, climate change and migration could be addressed without a cosmopolitan outlook.

Controversial AI ‘Lie Detectors’ Coming To EU Airports, Border Crossings

Several European airports will deploy an AI-powered lie detector at border checkpoints in a trial run of the new technology, reports CNN.  When a passenger approaches customs, they will be asked a series of questions by a "virtual border guard avatar," which will use an Artificial Intelligence to monitor their faces to quickly determine whether they are lying in an effort to reduce congestion.  The avatar will become "more skeptical" and change its tone of voice if it believes a person has lied, before referring suspect passengers to a human guard and allowing those believed to be honest to pass through, said Keeley Crockett of Manchester Metropolitan University in England, who was involved in the project.

No Nuclear Arms Race In Europe!

US President Trump announced to withdraw from the Intermediate Range Nuclear Force Treaty (INF) with Russia. The Treaty put an end to the stationing of land-based intermediate range nuclear missiles in Europe. It is reassuring that both sides have announced that they are seeking negotiations now. The aim of these negotiations must be to uphold the general prohibition of intermediate range nuclear missiles (“zero-solution”) in Europe, now and in future. The INF Treaty protects Europe and especially Germany since more than 30 years from being the stage of a threatening nuclear arms race. Ronald Reagan and Michail Gorbatschownegotiated the Treaty at the end of the 1980s.

Europe And The US Clash Over Washington’s Economic War On Iran

Washington’s imposition of sweeping new sanctions on Iran—aimed at strangling its economy and precipitating regime change in Tehran—is roiling world geopolitics. As of today, the US is embargoing all Iranian energy exports and freezing Iran out of the US-dominated world financial system, so as to cripple the remainder of its trade and deny it access to machinery, spare parts and even basic foodstuffs and medicine. In doing so, American imperialism is once again acting as a law unto itself. The sanctions are patently illegal and under international law tantamount to a declaration of war. They violate the UN Security Council-backed 2015 Iran nuclear accord...

Violent Ukrainian Neo-Nazi Speaks at US Govt Org, Helps Kiev Police ‘Purge’ Roma

A prominent activist from the violent Ukrainian neo-Nazi gang C14 spoke at an event at a US government organization in Ukraine‘s capital Kiev. This young fascist leader has also boasted of working with Kiev police to “purge” Roma citizens from a train station, according to a Ukrainian human rights organization. The Grayzone Project has previously reported on how the US government has armed the neo-Nazi Azov Battalion, which is embedded in Ukraine’s National Guard, and which has met with US military advisers. C14 is even more notorious than Azov. This Nazi gang has carried out a slew of violent attacks on ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities in Ukraine.

A Trans-Atlantic Cooperative Of Dairy Farmers

Foremost Farms USA and Arla Foods, a European dairy cooperative, are in advanced discussions about forming a strategic partnership. Representatives recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding formalizing the possibility of future partnership. Henrik Andersen, Arla Foods Ingredients group vice-president, said the two farmer-owned cooperatives share many of the same values, plus their whey-market ambitions are compatible. Arla Foods wants to secure access to whey in the U.S. market, he said.

How The European Left Got Imperialism Wrong

Two books came out in 1902 about imperialism, one by an Indian nationalist writer Dadhabhai Naoroji, another by John A. Hobson. The books are, 'Poverty and Un-British Rule' & 'Imperialism: A Study'. Who did the western Left choose to get their opposition to imperialism from? Whose theoretical language did they adopt? They chose Hobson, the British small-l liberal who endorsed colonialism "because it has made for the creation of free white democracies". And why did Hobson claim that imperialism was an outgrowth of capitalism? Because in his view, capitalism resulted in gross inequality which meant the rich looked to invest overseas rather than at home. In other words, for Hobson, "imperialism" was just capital flight, and had nothing to do with explaining the economic relationship between the two-thirds world and the European powers that had conquered and occupied them.

US Isolated: Europe’s Big 3, Plus China & Russia Outmaneuver Trump To Keep Iran Deal At UN

Ann Arbor (Informed Comment) – Frederica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, chaired a special session of foreign ministers on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly meeting aimed at outmaneuvering Donald Trump on the Iran Deal. The meeting was attended by the European Union “Big Three,” i.e. Britain, France and Germany (the E3), plus Russia and China. So four of the five members of the UN Security Council participated. The US was conspicuous by its absence. In my whole 65 years I have never heard about 4 members of the UN Security Council meeting without the US and with the express purpose of outflanking Washington Policy! This is both weird and ominous.

Act Out! [174] – How A Small Town Went From Toxic Lakes To Europe’s Greenest City

In the 70s, Växjö was a polluted town nestled in the thick forests of southern Sweden. Today, this small town has been recognized by the EU as the greenest city in Europe. So, what happened? What did - and what are community members and politicians still doing to make their home more sustainable? And how could we emulate some of this work in our own American communities? Answers to all this and more, this week on Act Out!

Europe Working On Payment System Alternative To SWIFT & IMF To Attain Financial Independence From US

Last week, Maas called for European autonomy to be strengthened by creating payment channels that are independent of the United States, establishing a ‘European Monetary Fund’. The intention to create its own system is reportedly connected to Washington’s recent withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, and the re-imposition economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic. As Brussels stays committed to the pact signed in 2015 between Tehran and the world powers, the EU had to enforce the ‘Blocking Statute’ in order to safeguard European businesses operating in Iran from US sanctions against the country. However, the measure failed to keep European majors like Total, Maersk, Mercedes in Iran, as they cannot function independently of the US-dominated international banking system and international financial markets.

The Evidence Is In, And Austerity Is Declared A Loser

In 2014, Portugal stood on the brink. Its economy had collapsed amid Europe’s debt crisis, and unemployment had doubled. As part of a bailout program with the International Monetary Fund, which had lent the country 78 billion euros ($90 billion) in 2011, its government imposed drastic cuts to wages, pensions and social security. But then something remarkable happened. Rather than bow to the demands of its European debtors, the Portuguese government elected to reinvest in its public sector, restoring salaries and benefits to their pre-crisis levels. Four years later, the results speak for themselves. “The government’s U-turn, and willingness to spend, had a powerful effect,” writes The New York Times’ Liz Alderman. “Creditors railed against the move, but the gloom that had gripped the nation through years of belt-tightening began to lift. Business confidence rebounded. Production and exports began to take off.”

How European Workers Coordinated This Month’s Massive Amazon Strike—And What Comes Next

As Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ net worth topped $150 billion last week, making him the richest man in modern history, thousands of Amazon workers across Europe went on strike. The work stoppage, which lasted three days at some facilities, was one of the largest labor actions against Amazon to date, and the first to receive widespread coverage in the U.S. media. But the strikes and protests in Spain, Germany and Poland were just the latest in an escalating series of actions against Amazon in Europe, where workers belonging to both conventional unions and militant workers’ organizations are forging a transnational movement against the internet juggernaut. In Germany, which is Amazon's second-biggest market after the United States, workers at the company’s fulfillment centers waged the first-ever strike against Amazon in 2013.

It’s Time For NATO To Go The Way Of The Warsaw Pact

The outcome of the July 11-12 NATO meeting in Brussels got lost amid the media’s obsession with President Donald Trump’s bombast, but the “Summit Declaration” makes for sober reading. The media reported that the 28-page document “upgraded military readiness,” and was “harshly critical of Russia,” but there wasn’t much detail beyond that. But details matter, because that’s where the devil hides. One such detail is NATO’s “Readiness Initiative” that will beef up naval, air, and ground forces in “the eastern portion of the Alliance.” NATO is moving to base troops in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, and Poland. Since Georgia and Ukraine have been invited to join the Alliance, some of those forces could end up deployed on Moscow’s western and southern borders.

European Court Of Justice: Gene-Editing Will Be Regulated In Same Way As GMOs

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) today published its ruling on the legal status of food and feed crops derived from certain new genetic modification techniques. It gave clear confirmation that organisms from these new gene editing techniques are covered by existing EU GMO regulation. Reacting to the decision, which corroborates the January 2018 opinion of one of the court’s Advocates General, Corporate Europe Observatory’s agribusiness campaigner Nina Holland said: “This is a big victory for the environment, farmers and consumers. It clarifies that EU decision makers have to ensure that products from these new techniques are assessed for potential food safety and environmental risks, and that they are properly labelled as GMOs.
