Tracking Dissent: US Officials Who Have Resigned Over The War On Gaza

Support from President Joe Biden's administration for the Israeli government's war on Gaza has resulted in an unprecedented surge of dissent within United States agencies. Several officials and military officers have resigned in opposition since the Israeli military launched a massive bombardment after Hamas fighters stormed Israel on October 7, 2023. During the week of July 4, 2024, 12 individuals who resigned released a unified statement of opposition. "America’s diplomatic cover for, and continuous flow of arms to, Israel has ensured our undeniable complicity in the killings and forced starvation of a besieged Palestinian population in Gaza," the dissenters declared.

Scientists Urge Biden To Cancel $100 Billion Nuclear Weapons Boondoggle

More than 700 scientists on Monday called for an end to the United States' land-based nuclear weapons program that's set to be replaced, following a Pentagon decision to approve the program despite soaring costs. In an open letter to President Joe Biden and Congress, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) argued that the new intercontinental-range ballistic missile system, known as Sentinel, was "expensive, dangerous, and unnecessary." The Department of Defense on Monday certified the continuation of the project, releasing the results of a review that was legally required when the cost estimate ballooned to "at least" $131 billion earlier this year, which drew the scrutiny of some Democrats in Congress, according to The Hill.

Power For The Sake Of Power

When I awoke Saturday morning, I found my thoughts wandering back a decade, when my siblings and I plotted to get our father’s car keys out of his frail, unsteady hands. Watching Joe Biden in a television interview will do this to you. “I am running the world,” was one of the more unfathomable remarks our burbling president made when he sat Friday evening for a 22–minute exchange with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. It is a frightening thought, and thank goodness it is delusory. But anyone this out of touch with the world he thinks he runs should not be running anything. If I were Jill Biden—Dr. Jill Biden—I would seize the keys to the ’67 Corvette and hide them at the back of a kitchen drawer.

Biden: ‘I’m Running The World’

About midway through what was billed as the most consequential interview of Joe Biden’s political career, he uttered the most consequential words in the interview: “I am running the world.” Those five words explain why he refuses to withdraw from the race and confirm what most Americans deny, but which most of the world knows: U.S. presidents act as world emperors.  The interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos was supposed to be Biden’s chance to show the country he is mentally fit to remain in the presidency and run for a second term, at the end of which, if he is still alive, he’d be 86 years old.

Democrats No Longer Have An Excuse For Holding A Virtual Convention

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has been planning a virtual, videocast , online convention like that occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic . In another carefully stage-managed event, the pro forma nomination of Joe Biden and the party platform approval was to take place prior to the terrestrial convention, avoiding any sort of disruption that might somehow make it inside the doors of Chicago’s United Center between August 19 and 22. Indeed, anyone who actually bothered to watch the videocast would likely see no point to watching another big boring rubber stamp broadcast from Chicago.

People’s Tribunal Finds Marcos, Duterte And Biden Guilty

On May 18th, 2024, the International People’s Tribunal found the U.S.-backed Philippine government guilty of human rights violations and war crimes against the Filipino people.  Hundreds gathered in Brussels to hear two days of harrowing testimony, mostly from victims and their families. Witnesses described the willful murder and torture of civilians, arbitrary arrests and indiscriminate bombings of houses and schools, among other atrocities committed by the Philippine government in its ongoing armed conflict with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), a revolutionary group fighting for genuine democracy and self determination for the Filipino people.

Analyzing The Biden/Trump Debate And The 2024 Electoral Process

The plan basically, is to persuade Biden to step down. If he doesn't, there is going to be a messy open convention, where he will end up probably losing the delegates that he has now pledged to him. So there is no plan at all. But what the result of this non plan is that the Democrats look awfully weak, and it was guaranteed really before the debate that Trump was going to win. Because the main elements of the capitalist class have basically decided that they were going to go with Trump. That's why the funding has shifted already. So no, it's almost guaranteed that this fumbling around is going to assure that Trump will be in fact, the next President of the United States of America.

The Presidential Debate That Wasn’t

In the days immediately following the first US presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, countless analyses have appeared. Nearly all have focused on the candidates’ delivery, less on what they said, and almost nothing about what should have been but was not said. Trump was obviously coached by his team to tone down the personal insults, which he mostly did, and scored some policy points while making dozens of false or unverified statements in the process. Meanwhile, as the general media analysis has also gone, Biden’s delivery was a disaster. As one well known TV commentator called it: “a slow motion car accident”.

Trusting The ‘Five Eyes’ Only

Wherever he travels globally, President Biden has sought to project the United States as the rejuvenated leader of a broad coalition of democratic nations seeking to defend the “rules-based international order” against encroachments by hostile autocratic powers, especially China, Russia, and North Korea. “We established NATO, the greatest military alliance in the history of the world,” he told veterans of D-Day while at Normandy, France on June 6th. “Today… NATO is more united than ever and even more prepared to keep the peace, deter aggression, defend freedom all around the world.”

Third Biden Administration Appointee Resigns Over Gaza Policy

In 2020, Maryam Hassanein cast her vote for Joe Biden in the first presidential election she was old enough to vote in, believing he represented “hope” and an opportunity for “justice for Muslim Americans and for marginalized communities as a whole.” On Tuesday, Hassanein became the latest member of the Biden administration to publicly resign over the president’s policies on the Gaza war — and the youngest known to resign to date, at age 24. “I learned that even though the agency I work for doesn’t produce foreign policy, serving in the administration in any capacity essentially makes you complicit in the genocide of the Palestinians,” Hassanein told HuffPost of her resignation from the Interior Department, which has not previously been made public.

90 Minutes That Shook The Liberals Awake

When these two frightening people descended into a bickering exchange concerning Biden’s golf handicap and Trump’s girth, I knew this first and probably last direct exchange between two incompetents contending for the world’s most powerful office was a lost cause. I lost 90 minutes of my time as it schussed down the chute. But never mind that. And never mind the media “analysts,” who rated the event like theater critics according to who turned in the best performance. The American people lost Wednesday night, and they lost big. And beyond Americans, the rest of the world lost, too.

Trump/Biden Debate Immigration: US Foreign Policy As A Driver Is Ignored

The contestants squared off in the first of the US presidential debates of 2024. Both wore identical white shirts and navy suits with American flag lapel pins. One wore a red tie; the other a blue one. There were other differences, but none quite so substantive. The immigration issue dominated the debate. The challenger claimed that the country was being menaced by immigrants – marauding hordes of rapists, murders, and mentally ill. They were the ruination of the nation. Social Security and Medicare were jeopardized by the alien element. Immigrants endangered the jobs of blacks and Hispanics.

‘Falling Gently Away’: The G–7 In Italy

That Group of 7 gathering on the coast of the Adriatic June 13–15 was truly a doozy, I have to say. Readers might think it a waste of column inches to devote any linage to it, as many will surely have forgotten about it by now—not to mention those many others who did not know of it in the first place and so could not get as far as forgetting it. But this just is my point: The seven people claiming to be the world’s most powerful assemble for a summit and it is not worth our attention? Say whaaa? The significance of this year’s G–7, I mean to say, lies in its insignificance. Considering the mess these very folk have made of the world, this bears consideration.

Two Years Since Abortion Rights Were Overturned In The United States

On June 24, 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned protections for abortion rights nationwide, giving the green-light for states run by ultra-conservative politicians to implement draconian abortion bans. As a result, millions of women, concentrated in the poorest regions of the country, saw their reproductive rights taken away from them—systematically denied abortion even of cases of medical necessity or rape. The US Supreme Court decision of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization sparked a nationwide movement for abortion rights, spearheaded by major feminist and left-wing organizations as well as working people pouring into the streets.

Top US Official On Israel-Palestine Affairs Tends ‘Surprise’ Resignation

The deputy assistant secretary for Israeli-Palestinian affairs at the US State Department, Andrew Miller, resigned from his position this week in what US media describes as a significant “setback” to the White House's efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. Miller's colleagues told the Washington Post that he announced his departure on 21 June in a surprise move, citing his family and saying “he has seen them sparingly as the eight-month war in Gaza has become all-consuming.” Nevertheless, officials familiar with Miller described him as skeptical of President Joe Biden's "bear hug” strategy toward Israel.
