8000 Chicagoans Make It Clear: ‘No Trump, No Troops!’

Chicago, IL – On September 6, 8000 Chicagoans rallied and marched downtown to demand that no federal troops be deployed in the city. The demonstration, led by the Coalition Against the Trump Agenda (CATA) in partnership with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), showed broad opposition to the incoming illegal military occupation and made clear that Chicagoans are not afraid to exercise their democratic right to resist. “The Trump administration has been escalating their illegal attacks on the city,” said Veronica Castro, ICIRR’s deputy director. Castro described recent incidents of ICE activity, emboldened by the incoming federal forces, including masked agents targeting the domestic violence courthouse for arrests.

DC Citizens Demand Statehood In Rally And March Against Occupation

Washington DC—Tens of thousands of DC citizens rallied and marched Saturday demanding the immediate end to occupation forces and an end to police harassment and illegal arrests in communities throughout the city. The We Are All DC action was in response to the regime’s deployment of 1000s of federal police and over 2000 Army National Guard Soldiers from Southern States, including Ohio, West Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Citizens denounced roundups of immigrants, traffic stop traps, and the arrests some U.S. citizens. The march began at Malcom X Park and ended about a mile away at Freedom Plaza, where organizers told of the adverse affects the occupation had on their communities, police stops to check drivers, usually without probable cause, and ICE roundups of immigrants and green card holders awaiting their final approval as citizens.

It’s hard to keep track of all of the Trump administration’s many violations of people’s rights. But there’s one that workers and oppressed people need to pay particular attention to: Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to occupy the Black and migrant communities in Washington, D.C., and his attempt to take over policing in that city. Why is this important? Because it is a test case for martial law in urban, working-class areas where a large portion of the population is people of color — the case in D.C. despite the recent drop in the percentage of Black residents. This represents an effort to further ethnically cleanse D.C. — while the U.S. funds the ethnic cleansing that Israel is committing in Gaza and the West Bank. 

United Methodist Church Divests From Israel Bonds

The United Methodist Church (UMC) has announced that it will divest from the bonds of governments that are maintaining illegal military occupations. Wespath, the church’s retirement-benefits agency, is now excluding investments in the bonds of Israel, Morocco and Turkey. “With our framework, we took a step back,” said Wespath executive Andy Hendren told United Methodist News. “We wanted to do a more principled, holistic look at all sovereign debt, so it not only looks at military occupations like those identified in the resolution — those three. But there are other military occupations in the world that government should be held accountable for.” “As United Methodists, our witness must align with our values,” Bishop Tracy S. Malone, Council of Bishops president, added.

Washington Prepares For Troop Withdrawal From Baghdad

The US army is preparing to start withdrawing troops from several sites in Iraq, including in the capital Baghdad, and will relocate them to the northern city of Erbil in the country’s autonomous Kurdistan region, according to Al-Sumeriya. An Iraqi government source told the outlet on 17 August that "the international coalition will withdraw from Ain al-Assad base, Baghdad airport, and the Joint Operations Command toward the city of Erbil." The source added that "the withdrawal of coalition forces will take place in September, in implementation of the agreement between Baghdad and Washington," noting that "the military trainers will remain in the country and have nothing to do with the withdrawal of international coalition forces."

United Kingdom Endorses Moroccan Control Of Western Sahara

In June, just weeks before home secretary Yvette Cooper proscribed Palestine Action as a terrorist group, the UK government reversed longstanding policy by endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan over Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony that has been under illegal occupation for 50 years. In a joint communique signed by foreign secretary David Lammy and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, the UK said the 2007 autonomy plan – which gives the indigenous Sahrawis self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty – was “the most credible, viable and pragmatic basis” to end the years-long conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front, the political-military movement representing the Sahrawi people.

It is designed to make people think something new is happening when Black and other marginalized D.C. residents know we already live in the most heavily policed city in the United States. Our city, with a population over 700,000, is patrolled by 32 independent police agencies, eight university departments, and five local agencies that have cooperative agreements with the DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) under the Police Coordination Act (PCA). These agencies share the same immunity and powers as MPD when patrolling D.C.

FoTHG is guided by the demands of Palestinian Civil Society convening organizations, and prioritizes the leadership of FoTHG founding international organizations based in the Global South.

Netanyahu Orders Israeli Army To Conquer All Of Gaza

The Israeli war cabinet met on Monday to decide on the next phase of Israel’s war on Gaza. The meeting was reportedly to choose between ending the war in favor of ceasefire talks or expanding it to reoccupy the entire Strip. According to initial unconfirmed reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has briefed “friendly journalists” that he has ordered the Israeli army to “conquer Gaza” in the face of opposition from the army’s Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir. Netanyahu’s office reportedly told N12: “The decision has been made — Israel is going to conquer the Gaza Strip.”

Israel is meticulously following a textbook model of instigating unrest in the occupied West Bank. The latest such provocations consisted of stripping the Palestinian-run Hebron (Al-Khalil) municipality of its administrative powers over the venerable Ibrahimi Mosque. Worse, according to Israel Hayom, it granted these powers to the religious council of the Kiryat Arba Jewish settlement, an extremist settler body. Though all Jewish settlers in occupied Palestine can be qualified as extremists, the approximately 7,500 inhabitants of Kiryat Arba represent a more virulent category.
