Heavy Israeli Crackdown On Palestinians Marking Nakba Anniversary

Palestinians across the West Bank gathered in large numbers on Saturday to mark the 73rd anniversary of the Nakba, or "the Catastrophe," which has come to define the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in recent history. The protests commemorate the event in which some 800,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes to make way for the creation of the state of Israel in 1948.

We Reviewed Police Tactics Seen In Nearly 400 Protest Videos

As protests denouncing police brutality against unarmed Black people spread to thousands of cities, it was videos of police violence — this time, directed at protesters — that went viral. Clips showed officers launching tear gas canisters at protesters’ heads, shooting pepper spray from moving vehicles and firing foam bullets into crowds. ProPublica looked at nearly 400 social media posts showing police responses to protesters and found troubling conduct by officers in at least 184 of them. In 59 videos, pepper spray and tear gas were used improperly; in a dozen others, officers used batons to strike noncombative demonstrators; and in 87 videos, officers punched, pushed and kicked retreating protesters, including a few instances in which they used an arm or knee to exert pressure on a protester’s neck.

The Roots Of Violent Protest: Violent Cops

You will be shocked, simply SHOCKED, to learn that after decades of researching effective methods for police response to large crowd actions, researchers have found — and you’re never going to believe this — that when cops show up in military gear and get aggressive, they actually make protest violence worse! That’s one of the findings in “New Directions in Protest Policing,” a 2015 paper that reviews decades upon decades of police history and the conclusions of multiple separate commissions. Police that dress like they’re going to war, who try to control First Amendment expression rather than facilitate it, and who act in arbitrary ways can inflame violence and jeopardize their own safety and that of the public. The paper was written by Edward R. Maguire, an Arizona State University professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, and it dives all the way back to the nation’s founding and the civil unrest that led to the creation of the United States.

Spy Planes, Nuclear Sniffers Fly Over US Capital As National Guard Occupies City

After five days of mass protests in Washington, DC, against police brutality and the in-custody death of black Minnesota man George Floyd last week, US President Donald Trump has made an almost unprecedented show of force by deploying thousands of troops in the nation’s capital, even as more peaceful protests have come in the wake of rioting and looting. A National Guard Swearingen RC-26B spy plane was spotted over the city Tuesday night, as was a special Bell 412 helicopter fitted out by the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) for “sniffing” out the telltale radioactivity put out by nuclear weapons, suggesting defense officials feared the use of a “dirty bomb.” Unconfirmed reports of drone activity across the city appeared on social media, and on Wednesday, observers also spotted V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, used by the US Marine Corps for transporting troops.

As Night Falls, NYC Protests Against Police Violence Grow Chaotic

As night fell in New York City, chaos and violent encounters fanned out once again between police and demonstrators. In Lower Manhattan, a dumpster was set on fire, forcing police officers to cordon off protesters. On some streets, there were bashed-in store windows even though some protesters had pleaded with others not to engage in looting. Around 10: 30 p.m., NYPD began making significant arrests at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. At one point, police could be seen racing after protesters. Some observers were maced at close range. There were at least half a dozen people arrested. In one video from PIX11 News, an officer can be seen shoving a protester down a set of stairs after another threw her to the ground.

White Women Line Up To Form Human Shield To Protect Black Protesters

Injustice and discrimination tend to be described in binary terms: good vs. evil, female vs. male, Black vs. White. However, at one of the at least twenty anti-police violence demonstrations held across the country on Thursday, an act of alliance disrupted that line of thinking by showing White bodies on the line to protect Black lives. In an image captured by photographer Tim Druck, scores of White women in Lousiville lined up arm-in-arm to form a human shield separating the Louisville Metro Police from protestors expressing their angst about the murder of Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black people at the hands of the police). Taylor was fatally shot by police as they barged in her home in March with a no-knock warrant and killed her while she was laying in her bed.

Extremists Are Among Those Fomenting Violence In Twin Cities

Protesters and onlookers have posted numerous videos and accounts of confrontations with white men on social media, sometimes including symbols associated with fringe groups that originated online.  Many people have also told MPR News reporters of witnessing armed men in Minneapolis. Bridget Schumann was out for a run near Calhoun Square in south Minneapolis on Friday night when she saw a truck that was being driven aggressively, honking and intimidating other drivers. The truck had a big white sticker on the back of the cab with the OK sign symbol associated with white supremacists.  “There were two men in the driver and passenger seat and they were wearing camo bulletproof vests and they were armed,” she said.  Schumann watched them get out of the truck and walk around in an apartment building parking garage like they were looking for something.

Almost 100 cars here on multiple blocks, surrounding the Hudson County Detention Center in New Jersey! The detention centers must be emptied before they turn into death camps. ICE won’t do it; only Governors have the emergency powers to save these lives.

Amid Protests And Crises, Lebanon Defaults On Eurobond

Lebanon defaulted Monday on a $1.2 billion Eurobond. Barred From Striking, Airline Food Workers Seek Other Ways To Protest

Melieni Cruz, who helps prepare the meals passengers eat on airplanes, went thousands of dollars into debt because she couldn’t pay her soaring medical bills. “When the doctor found cysts on my ovaries, I had to save for a year to afford the procedure, and my cysts got bigger and more painful the whole time,” she said as she picketed the terminal at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

California Seniors Protest Eviction With ‘Walker Brigade’

Chile: Despite Harsh Repression Of Thousands In Dignity Square Protestors Prevail

Neither the carabineros with their usual violent repression, nor Piñera, the dictator-puppet of US policies for the continent, nor even the hegemonic media with their lies or concealment of what is really happening, could prevent that human tide that has been coming out of the streets day after day to overflow Dignity Square in the center of Santiago.
