Infrared Aerial Surveillance Used At Standing Rock To Monitor And Track Protesters

For months, the North Dakota Highway Patrol flew daily surveillance flights over the protesters’ camps and used forward-looking infrared (FLIR) cameras to gather real-time geo-spatial intelligence (GEOINT). These thermographic cameras sense infrared radiation emitted by heat sources which give law enforcement the ability to perceive thermal radiation and monitor their area of land operations at night.

On The Ground, Feeling The Pulse Of Protest Hong Kong

What’s going on deep down in Hong Kong? For a former resident with deep cultural and emotional ties to the Fragrant Harbor, it’s quite hard to take it all in just within the framework of cold geopolitical logic. Master filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai once said that when he came up with the idea for Happy Together, he decided to shoot the story of his characters in Buenos Aires because that was as far away from Hong Kong as possible. A few weeks ago I was walking the streets of far away Buenos Aires dreaming of Hong Kong.

Families Organize Vigil Outside Eli Lilly, Demanding Lower Cost Of Insulin

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – Dozens of people were protesting outside Eli Lilly headquarters Saturday night. They're demanding lower insulin prices. The cost of insulin tripled from 2002 to 2013 and it has spiked every year since. At Saturday's vigil, several people shared stories about rationing insulin because of the price. Erin Weaver says it killed her son. "My mother's heart is furious. Especially on their website when they say that Lilly cares. If Lilly cared they wouldn't be killing their consumer base."

Greenpeace Protesters Arrested After Hanging From Bridge; Shuting Down Section Of Houston Ship Channel

Nearly a dozen Greenpeace protesters were arrested after hanging from the Fred Hartman bridge in Houston and forcing the closure of part of the Houston Ship Channel Thursday while taking on President Donald Trump and the oil industry. The U.S. Coast Guard confirms a portion of the upper channel near Baytown was closed during the protest, between Light 102A and Light 104. This happened as the city was preparing for Thursday's Democratic presidential debate. Greenpeace tweeted Thursday morning that they were in Houston to protest the use of fossil fuels outside the country's largest oil port...

US is Behind Hong Kong Protests Says US Policymaker

The US continues to deny any involvement in ongoing unrest in China’s special administrative region of Hong Kong. However, even a casual look at US headlines or comments made by US politicians makes it clear the unrest not only suits US interests, but is spurred on almost exclusively by them. The paradoxical duality of nearly open support of the unrest and denial of that support has led to headlines like the South China Morning Post’s, “Mike Pompeo rebukes China’s ‘ludicrous’ claim US is behind Hong Kong protests.”

Colonial Heritage, Socialist Future? The Complex History Behind Hong Kong Protests

The large-scale protests gripping Hong Kong the past few months, which have included violent confrontations with authorities, strikes, and student boycotts, show few signs of abating. The protests, including the June 16 and Aug. 18 demonstrations that drew 1.7 million participants, were sparked by the introduction of an Extradition Law into the Hong Kong Legislative Council. The proposed measure would have allowed Hong Kong authorities to detain and transfer out people wanted for crimes in Taiwan, Macau, or mainland China to stand trial in those jurisdictions.

Artists Call For Kemper Museum Of Contemporary Art To Drop Trustee Tied To $130 Million Lawsuit Over ICE Detainees

Mariner Kemper, the CEO and chairman of the UMB Financial Corp (UMB Bank) and a trustee of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri—which was founded by his parents, R. Crosby Kemper Jr. and Mary “Bebe” Hunt, in 1994—is under fire for his connections to President Trump’s controversial immigration policies. Artists began calling for his removal from the museum board after learning that UMB Bank represents the bondholders for the publicly owned and privately operated Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls, Rhode Island...

Roger Waters And John Pilger Make Powerful Defence Of Julian Assange In London

Up to 1,000 people gathered last night in central London to hear internationally acclaimed musician Roger Waters deliver a musical tribute to imprisoned WikiLeaks’ publisher Julian Assange. Performing outside the UK Home Office, just miles from Belmarsh Prison where Assange is being held as a Category A prisoner, Waters sang Pink Floyd’s iconic song “Wish You Were Here.” He was accompanied by guitarist Andrew Fairweather Low. Supporters filled the forecourt and pavement on both sides of Marsham Street, many carrying banners and placards demanding Assange’s freedom and the release of imprisoned whistleblower Chelsea Manning.

Extinction Rebellion Shuts Down Manchester

"Any action to disrupt major transport links impacting businesses and communities will be totally unacceptable" Greater Manchester Police have urged climate change protesters to allow the city to get back to normal following this weekend's demonstration. Extinction Rebellion demonstrators have brought Deansgate to a standstill since Friday morning, to highlight the threat of climate change. Roads remained closed to all cars from St Mary's Gate to John Dalton Street as hundreds of protesters gathered for talks on sustainable living, climate chance and resistance.

How To Make Sense Of Foreign Protests, Conflicts And Uprisings

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, our government-funded media outlet, has published an article titled “Australian expat living in Hong Kong throws off business suit to join protest movement“. The entire story is in the headline: some random guy, who ABC keeps anonymous but for the name “Daniel”, has joined the protests in Hong Kong. That’s it. That’s the whole entire bombshell newsworthy news story. “In Australia we have proper democracy but in Hong Kong, democracy is being slowly eroded away and I’ll try to do whatever I can to try and help the cause,” the anonymous guy told ABC.

At 11:00 AM on Wednesday, around two hundred health and drug policy activists swarmed New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office, where they protested the lawmaker’s failure to deliver on a promise he made during his 2017 re-election campaign: to open the country’s first safe consumption sites. Among the thirteen demonstrators who were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct were Nan Goldin, artist and founder of Prescription Addiction Intervention Now (P.A.I.N.), and P.A.I.N. member Megan Kapler.

Boris Johnson’s plan to suspend Parliament in order to force through a no deal Brexit by October 31 has been confirmed by the Queen’s Privy Council. The move has been met with backlash, with members of the public taking to the streets in London and Manchester to protest. One video shows hundreds of protestors chanting “no one voted for Boris”, while holding up EU and UK flag. Police officers can also be seen lining the gates outside Downing Street.

Thousands of Native Hawaiians and their supporters have been congregating since July 15 at the base of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano and mountain on the island of Hawaii. Known in Hawaiian as the kia’i, the protectors—a term the group prefers to “protesters”—seek to deter construction of the $1.4 billion Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), the largest telescope in the Northern Hemisphere. Business owners and state officials promise the telescope will provide jobs, educational opportunities and high-resolution astronomical imagery.
