Sociologists correlate high homicide rates to high unemployment and poverty rates; known historically as the Black Belt, Chicago’s predominantly African American South side is home to both. Characterized by disinvestment schemes such as tax increment financing districts which divert property tax money from the neighborhoods to white elephant projects that benefit the wealthy, southside Chicago was also home to the late police commander, Jon Burge, whose detectives extracted confessions from more than 100 people, mostly Black, by shocking them with cattle prods, smothering them with plastic typewriter covers and pointing guns in their mouths while pretending to play Russian roulette.

Public gatherings this week in Jackson, Mississippi and New Orleans, Louisiana — featuring an especially distinctive guest — will honor the legacy of revolutionary psychiatrist Frantz Fanon (1925-1961). The Black Alliance for Peace, an African internationalist organization committed to peace and opposition to war and imperialism, and Cooperation Jackson, which is building a solidarity economy anchored by worker-owned co-ops in West Jackson, are co-hosting several Black August events with Fanon’s eldest daughter. Mireille Fanon Mendès-France is a jurist, an educator, and an anti-racism expert who passionately shares her father’s commitment to rebellion against colonialism in its many forms.

Zoharah Simmons’ first trip to Israel and its occupied territories in 1994 got off to an inauspicious start. Born Gwen Robinson in Memphis, Tennessee, the great granddaughter of a slave and a former organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee who volunteered to work in Mississippi during Freedom Summer, Simmons was hardly unfamiliar with European settler colonialism or the violence that is its motor. She was, however, caught off guard by what she experienced upon her arrival in Tel Aviv as part of a peace delegation with the American Friends Service Committee, a social justice organization founded by the Quakers. First, there was the matter of getting past Israel’s immigration and customs agents.

Several days after US President Donald Trump announced his takeover of the local police force of Washington, DC, federal forces have begun patrolling the streets of the US capital. The Pentagon announced Thursday, August 14 that all 800 National Guard troops President Trump ordered into Washington’s streets this week to restore “law and order” have now been deployed. Defense Department Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson said that in rotating shifts of 100 to 200 unarmed soldiers, the National Guard will assist Washington police and federal law enforcement by guarding monuments and federal buildings, conducting “community safety patrols,” and engaging in “area beautification.”

Washington, D.C.- Trump’s alleged “takeover” of D.C. is a con. It is not about public safety; it is political theater. It is designed to make people think something new is happening when Black and other marginalized D.C. residents know we already live in the most heavily policed city in the United States. Our city, with a population over 700,000, is patrolled by 32 independent police agencies, eight university departments, and five local agencies that have cooperative agreements with the DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) under the Police Coordination Act (PCA). These agencies share the same immunity and powers as MPD when patrolling D.C.

Minneapolis, MN — As corporations across the United States gleefully regress back to their racist roots with the second Trump term, a fired worker in Minnesota is fighting back. General Mills, headquartered in a western Minneapolis suburb, is facing a lawsuit filed by a Black worker who claims he was fired as retaliation for speaking out against racist Black History Month literature that General Mills passed to employees. L. Lee Tyus Jr. was a packing technician at General Mills for five plus years before being fired in March 2025, according to the complaint (pdf). A month before his firing, General Mills distributed tabletop flyers titled “Fun Facts About Black History” that featured information on the Tulsa Race Massacre and the Black Codes.

For decades, the Albina district in Portland, Oregon, was the center of the city’s Black community. Local musicians transformed the neighborhoods into a hotspot for the West Coast’s jazz, blues and soul music scenes, earning Albina the nickname “Jumptown” in the 1940s and ‘50s. Milestones in Oregon’s civil rights struggle grew out of meetings in Albina’s parks and gathering halls. It was residents of Albina who started a citywide tree-planting program responsible for many of Portland’s now-famous blooming cherry trees. But by the ‘70s, much of it was gone.

The Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) unequivocally denounces the brutal assault and abduction of Amazon Labor Union co-founder Chris Smalls, who was detained by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Though he is now released, the exceptionally heinous treatment of Smalls by the Zionist state forces demonstrates the historical neurotic fear of any interconnection between Black / African resistance to white supremacy and resistance to capitalist exploitation. As part of the 21-member international collective aboard the aid ship Handala, a flotilla that was headed to Gaza to protest and break the blockade on the Palestinian people collectively being starved to death, Smalls was the only member of the group beaten and choked by IDF agents.

Washington—On Sunday, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social suggesting that the Washington Commanders National Football League franchise revert to its offensive former nickname, drawing ire from Native American leaders. In his post, the president suggested he may stop a deal that would eventually build a stadium for the Washington Commanders if they fail to change the name back to the Redskins, which was retired in 2020 after years of protest from Native communities. He further stated that the Cleveland Guardians—who stopped using the “Indians” nickname in 2020—should change their name back and said “MAKE INDIANS GREAT AGAIN.”

From The Atlanta Race Massacre To Cop City: The AJC Incites Harm

On Aug. 21, 2021, the editorial board of Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) published its support for "Cop City"—a then-proposed $90 million training facility for police and fire personnel; the cost of which has since ballooned to over $109 million, according to the most recently available reports. The Atlanta City Council had tabled a vote on a lease agreement for the proposed Cop City facility just days earlier after receiving tremendous opposition from residents, activists, and environmentalists. In its letter, which ran in the legacy paper's Sunday edition, the editorial board—whose members included Kevin Riley, the paper's editor-in-chief—argued that a "crime wave" necessitated the facility's quick approval and pleaded with the city council to revisit the vote as early as its next meeting.

Taking down the “Soviet Menace” in America, was, as we saw in part 11, not a response to any real “national security threat,” but a very real threat to corporate profits and neocolonial domination by the U.S. ruling class. It was a shield to hide its real, and much less popular, mission to take down those bold enough to challenge racism, advocate aggressively for workers, for peace, rather than world war, or cold war, and a post-war world that would also be free of colonialism. Even decades later this was so successful most of those who were extirpated from public life remain forgotten.

Longshore Workers Remember The Struggle To Free The Charleston Five

Dockworkers from around the world reunited in South Carolina for a week in June to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the successful campaign to “Free the Charleston 5” and the founding of the International Dockworkers Council. For nearly two years, five members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) faced felony rioting charges and prison sentences stemming from their roles in a January 2000 confrontation with police at the entrance to the Columbus Street Terminal in Charleston. The case sparked international outcry from unions and civil rights groups, who viewed the charges as a racist attack on organized labor by politically ambitious South Carolina Attorney General Charles Condon.

My, how times have changed. Ninety-three percent white as recently as 1970, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St, Paul has seen its minority population nearly quintuple to 31 percent since Mary Tyler Moore last tossed her bonnet towards the Minneapolis skyline in the iconic opening of her eponymous show. An influx of African Americans, Hmong, Laotians, Latinos and east African refugees has reshaped the politics of this metropolitan area that was widely regarded as among the most liberal in the country a generation ago, eclipsed only by San Francisco and Seattle in the minds of many. The arrest Monday of a Minnesota man on charges that he assassinated one state lawmaker and shot another is yet another reminder that the state is not the quaint, Scandinavian enclave that was the basis of Garrison Keillor’s Lake Wobegon.

To mark this day, Peoples Dispatch spoke to Rachel Domond, a young Black organizer and visual artist, who for years has organized Black communities and is a part of the movement for socialism, as a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

Southern Workers Strategize For Future Struggles

From June 13-15 more than 400 workers answered the call by the Southern Workers Assembly (SWA) to affirm an action plan to challenge the systemic racism, poverty and anti-unionism of the South. The dynamic agenda of the summit was held in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with workers mostly from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. All the main sessions were able to be heard in English and Spanish. Workers of all ages participated in very interactive breakout sessions that combined proven tactics for organizing with new ideas and technology.
