A Father’s Day Gift For Myself: Activism

News about climate change has been so spooky for so long that it can feel like background noise. We find a way to carry on like normal, even when the news is disquieting. Well, let me tell you I’m having a moment when it’s hard to do that. For me the trigger was a recent report by Australia’s Breakthrough National Center for Climate Restoration, which warns of “a near- to mid-term existential threat to human civilization.”

When America Had An Open Prison – The Story Of Kenyon Scudder And His ‘Prison Without Walls’

In a country with mass incarceration, horrific prison conditions and a penal system suffused with racism, some American prison reform activists wistfully look to Scandinavian institutions as beacons of humane prisons. Many Scandinavian countries even have open prisons – minimum security institutions that rely less on force and more on trust. Some don’t even have a locked perimeter, and they emphasize rehabilitation and preparation for a return to society. Back in the U.S., this might seem like an unattainable ideal. But in California, nearly 80 years ago, there was an open prison.

Poor People’s Moral Budget: Everybody Has The Right To Live

In April 2018, the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival released a Moral Agenda and Declaration of Fundamental Rights. The demands contained within that document present a comprehensive response to the systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, militarism, and war economy plaguing our country today. For the 140 million people who are poor, or one emergency away from being poor, we know these demands are necessary. This Poor People’s Moral Budget asks, given the resources of our society, whether these demands are also possible.

Global Inequality In A Time Of Climate Emergency

Something has changed, as most everyone in the climate movement agrees, and we have plenty of signposts that track the shift, from David Wallace-Well’s 2017 New York Magazine piece, The Uninhabitable Earth, to last year’s Deep Adaptation: A Map for Navigating Climate Tragedy, a paper downloaded by the hundreds of thousands. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change made the shift official with its own dramatic contribution, the landmark Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C.

Millions Strike Against Bolsonaro’s Pension Reforms

The streets answered with a resounding “no” to Jair Bolsonaro’s pension reform proposition, to his intentions of restraining rights, and to the continuity of attacks against the people that have been happening since Michel Temer’s coup d’etat in 2016. Throughout the day, the protests, summoned as a General Strike by national union organizations, gathered millions of people in 360 cities from north to south, in all of the 26 states and the Federal District. In the capitals and major cities, the transport unions adherence to the general strike – affecting subway, urban train and bus systems...

Police Turn Violent In Massive Protests In Hong Kong Over Controversial Extradition Bill

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong police fired tear gas and high-pressure water hoses against protesters who had massed outside government headquarters Wednesday in opposition to a proposed extradition bill that has become a lightning rod for concerns over greater Chinese control and erosion of civil liberties in the semiautonomous territory. The afternoon violence marked a major escalation in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory’s biggest political crisis in years. It came after protesters earlier in the day forced the delay of a legislative debate over the bill...

103 Groups Urge Senate Majority Leader McConnell To Bring The Save The Internet Act To A Floor Vote

Today marks one year since the FCC made the unpopular decision to officially kill net neutrality and broadband protections for the American people. On the one-year anniversary of the end of the Open Internet Order, we encourage the Senate to join your House colleagues in implementing the will of your constituents — 4 in 5 of whom support net neutrality, including 77% of Republicans, according to recent polling. Since the repeal of the Open Internet Order by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)...

Debt To Society

Americans believe that every qualified student—regardless of their color, gender, or financial situation—should be able to pursue their educational dreams, and that no one should face massive financial pain simply because they decided to get an education. Yet over the past several decades, state and federal policymakers have failed to adequately address the rising cost of college, respond to an increased demand for higher education, or ensure that students’ families have adequate resources to save for the future or deal with unexpected financial emergencies.

Under Guise Of “Choice”: Trump Launches Assault On Veterans’ Care

On June 6th, the Trump Administration launched what it calls a “revolution” in veterans’ health care. If that date rings a bell, it’s because, on June 6, 1944, American soldiers and their allies stormed ashore in Normandy, establishing a critical beach-head in the campaign to defeat Adolph Hitler and Nazism. In the aftermath of that and other World War II battles, tens of thousands of injured veterans were treated, back home, in a nationwide network of hospitals and clinics run by the federal government. Most patients of what’s now called the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) appreciated the specialized...

Second U.S. City Decriminalizes Magic Mushrooms, Other Psychedelics

Watching the rapid advance of mushroom decriminalization has been a trip. On Tuesday, the city council of Oakland, California voted to decriminalize the psychedelic fungus, citing the promise they've shown in treating depression, substance abuse, and other disorders. "This initiative aims to empower the Oakland community by restoring their relationship to nature," reads a city council analysis of the decriminalization law. "Decriminalizing nature provides individual and community sovereignty to explore different levels of the human experience, including mystical and spiritual states of consciousness."

A (Real) Strike To Fight For Abortion Rights

In recent weeks, several states have passed incredibly restrictive laws against abortion. The specifics of these laws vary, but the end result is the same: abortion is becoming illegal again. In many cases, these laws threaten anyone who gets or performs an abortion with prison time. The Alabama bill (HB 314) reclassifies performing an abortion at any stage of the pregnancy as a Class A felony, meaning that doctors will face a minimum of 10 years and up to 99 years in prison. The law states that people who seek or attain abortions will not face criminal or civil liability.

The Escalating War On Reproductive Rights

(IPS) – Abortion has long been a contentious issue across the world, and the debate is only heating up, prompting women to stand up and speak out for their reproductive rights. In response to increasingly restrictive policies, civil society is taking action to help protect abortion rights. “The failure of states to guarantee reproductive rights is a clear violation of human rights,” said President and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) Nancy Northup. “The center is committed to using the power of law to ensure that women and girls…are guaranteed access to sexual and reproductive health rights and services,” she added.

A Green New Deal Needs To Fight US Militarism

The war on terror unleashed in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attack has led to almost two decades of unchecked militarism. We are spending more money on our military than at any time in history. Endless wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Syria and elsewhere are still raging, more wars are threatened against Iran and beyond, costing the US trillions of dollars and creating humanitarian disasters. Treaties to control nuclear arms are unraveling at the same time that conflicts with the major powers of Russia and China are heating up.

U.S. Workers Are Standing Up For Their Rights. A New Law Would Back Them Up.

More workers engaged in collective action last year than in any other year in the past three decades. In 2018, 485,000 people participated in work stoppages — from teachers to hotel workers to workers in the telecommunications industry and more. In 2019, working people’s appetite for collective action shows no signs of slowing down. And they’re getting results. In April, workers at Stop & Shop ended the largest retail strike in nearly two decades, when their employer finally agreed to back off of proposed cuts to their paychecks and pensions.

ADAPT Activists Protest Cuts To Medicaid Healthcare Services.

The Department of Health and Human Services is the federal agency most directly responsible for ensuring that Disabled Americans who need Long Term Services and Supports receive them in the most integrated setting. Although there have been increased opportunities for community living, many individuals with disabilities remain trapped in nursing facilities or other institutions and many of the initiatives that underpin the progress we have made are being eroded or eliminated, as HHS leadership espouses support for harmful changes to the programs and services that keep people with disabilities living free...
