Demanding Peace And Security For The People In Beni

Since 2014, militia groups have killed over 1,000 civilians in the Beni territory in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Civilians, including children have been abducted, disappeared, injured and assassinated. An overall climate of terror has blanketed the area. As our spokesperson, Kambale Musavuli shared earlier this Fall, the people have had enough and are beyond outraged. His grandfather initiated a hunger strike in Beni, which led to his death. This past week, the local population rose up in anger over the lack of security and protection by the United Nations Mission in the Congo (MONUSCO) and the Congolese government. The people set ablaze MONUSCO offices and demonstrated against the local police. Unfortunately, the demonstrators were fired upon by Congolese security forces killing several civilians.

According to UN Watch, the texts condemn Israel for “repressive measures” against Syrian citizens in the Golan Heights, renew the mandate of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), and renew the mandate of a UN special committee to investigate “Israeli practices affecting the human rights of the Palestinian people.” Through the resolutions, UN is "expressing grave concern at the especially difficult situation of the Palestine refugees under occupation, including with regard to their safety, well-being and socioeconomic living conditions."

In November 2019, eight Palestinian, regional, and international organisations, including Al-Haq, BADIL, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR), Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights, Addameer, the Civic Coalition for Palestinian Rights in Jerusalem (CCPRJ), the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS), and Habitat International Coalition – Housing and Land Rights Network (HIC-HLRN), submitted a comprehensive 60-page report to the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) ahead of Israel’s upcoming review in December 2019.

For the last month, the First Committee of the United Nations has met to discuss, debate and vote on resolutions related to disarmament issues. While nuclear-weapon states have attempted to obstruct progress or backtrack on previous commitments, the majority of states continued to push forward a nuclear disarmament agenda. At the upcoming 2020 NPT Review Conference, this majority will need to resist the efforts of a small few and hold firm to strong language on disarmament and the humanitarian impacts of nuclear weapons.

New York - For the 28th time the UN member states call to lift the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States. To Cuba. With 187 votes in favor, the United Nations Organization (UN) approved the resolution on the need to lift the financial, economic and commercial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, which constitutes a violation of human rights and international regulations. The results of the vote held on Thursday demonstrate the "unquestionable isolation of the US," said Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez. The resolution against the blockade against Cuba received only three votes against (USA, Israel and Brazil) and two abstentions (Colombia and Ukraine).

Special rapporteur of the United Nations Organization on human rights in Palestine Michael Lynk condemned Israel for preventing him Thursday from traveling to the Palestinian territories, violating thus established procedures and protocols. "This is a violation of the procedures and protocols because, as part of my work, I must go and see the situation on the ground firsthand," the official said at a press conference in New York. In addition, he said that Israel's mission in Geneva does not respond to the requests to visit Palestinian territories.

Why are civil society organisations excited about strengthening the UN when momentum seems distinctly in the opposite direction? When divisions are rife and the international system is in damage limitation mode, as the US cuts funding and repeatedly pulls out of UN bodies?  The opportunity is the UN’s 75th anniversary (UN75) next year and there are modest reasons for hope. The General Assembly (through GA.RES.299)  will host world leaders on 21 September 2020 to reaffirm their collective commitment to multilateralism.
