US Imperialism

Race, Rights And Repression

As the presidential election will take place in about two months, we need to discuss the prospects of peace, if any, under a Harris or Trump administration, but specifically in Palestine and in the West Asia region, but Ukraine is still an issue, more than two years after Russia's special military operation began. Who is in charge of the US as Ukraine undertakes an incursion into Russia, and what does this mean for the future? Also, we'll talk about AFRICOM, the US Africa Command, which was founded in October of 2008 in the waning days of the George W Bush administration, but under Obama and other presidents, has grown significantly. Also, how does this impact domestic policy, with the 1033 program giving surplus military equipment to police departments and the IDF training of police forces, why do we have a more than $800 billion military budget, which, of course, is a leading cause of austerity.

Conditioning Americans For War With Russia

As the drums beat louder and louder about alleged threats from Russia, the Biden administration today blew perilous new life into the debunked and disgraced Russiagate disinformation operation. Russiagate seems too good of a weapon for the Democrats to give up. Its initial appearance, beginning in 2016, dangerously raised tensions with nuclear-armed Russia. But in the midst of today’s escalating crisis in Ukraine, a Russiagate repeat recklessly raises risk to insane heights. Here’s how The New York Times reported it today: Garland testified: “The effort in this case is to affect the preferred outcome of the presidential election. … the Director of National Intelligence has testified that Russia’s preferences have not changed from the preceding election.”

Venezuela In The Crosshairs Of Technological Imperialism

In August, Venezuela’s re-elected president, Nicolás Maduro, signed a decree blocking access to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, for 10 days. President Maduro said of its owner, tycoon Elon Musk, “He has violated the rules by inciting hatred, fascism, civil war, death, confrontation among Venezuelans, and has violated all Venezuelan laws.” Musk, who also owns the Starlink satellite broadband network, expressed his support for the far-right Venezuelan opposition and insulted the president, which is a sign of the determination of the new global elites to carry out regime change in Venezuela. This action was accompanied by other attempts implemented through various technological platforms such as Apple, Google, and Meta.

Turkish Masses Protest Presence Of US Navy Ship At Izmir Port

The Turkish Communist Party (TKP) alongside other Turkish political groups and masses took to the streets on Tuesday, September 3, near İzmir port to protest the anchoring of the United States’ Navy multi-purpose amphibious assault ship, USS Wasp (LHD-1) at the port. The arrival of the US Navy ship at İzmir Port followed a joint training exercise that took place in the Mediterranean sea between August 13-17 with Türkiye’s first amphibious warship TCG Anadolu. The exercise has been considered an indicator of military cooperation between Türkiye and the United States, which provoked the outrage of Turkish political groups and activists.

Secret Chats Expose Decade Of US Meddling In Ecuador

Exclusive interviews and leaked messages reveal how a key ally of the US weaponized the fight against corruption and criminal organizations to selectively prosecute Ecuador’s heads of state, viciously persecuting Rafael Correa and his Revolución Ciudadana movement on flimsy evidence, while delaying investigations into much graver crimes allegedly committed by his successors. Recently-leaked secret chats obtained by The Grayzone expose how Ecuadorian prosecutor Diana Salazar leaked information to a subject of an ongoing investigation, undermining the prosecution of associates of Ecuador’s current and previous US-aligned presidents, and acted hand-in-glove with the United States government, which essentially selected and controlled prosecutions from Washington.

Israel’s War On Gaza Is Only Possible Due To US Support And Weapons

Israel would not realistically be able to wage war on Gaza without US support. Citing a senior Israeli air force official, prominent newspaper Haaretz reported that, “without the Americans’ supply of weapons to the Israel Defense Forces, especially the air force, Israel would have had a hard time sustaining its war for more than a few months”. President Joe Biden has repeatedly emphasized that Israel serves US imperial interests in a highly geostrategic region. In a speech in Tel Aviv in October 2023, Biden stated, “I have long said, if Israel didn’t exist, we’d have to invent it”. Former Secretary of State Alexander Haig, an ex US Army general who commanded NATO, similarly boasted that “Israel is the largest American aircraft carrier in the world that cannot be sunk, does not carry even one American soldier, and is located in a critical region for American national security”.

What The US Calls ‘Criminal Gangs’ Are Low-Income-Neighborhoods

With this interview we try to take a look at Haiti, the first independent black republic in the world, which is immersed in a deep political and social crisis. The Caribbean nation, recurrently hit by natural disasters and suffering from political storms caused by the colonization of its political class, faces political turbulence as one of its greatest challenges. This interview dives into the current reality of Haiti, exploring the roots of the crisis, its current manifestations and the uncertain future prospects for this country that seems trapped in an endless cycle of suffering. Kim Ives, commented on the issue to us.

On A Highway To Hell

An interesting thing happened on the road to Armageddon. In January 2017, then-Vice President Joe Biden, speaking at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, warned about the dangers inherent in expanding funding for, and by extension increasing the importance of, nuclear weapons. “If future budgets reverse the choices we’ve made, and pour additional money into a nuclear buildup,” said Biden — referring to Obama administration policies that included secured the New START Treaty limiting the size of the U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals — “it hearkens back to the Cold War and will do nothing to increase the day-to-day security of the United States or our allies.”

Build Global Mass Opposition To The New Cold War

The following is the text of a speech given by Friends of Socialist China co-editor Carlos Martinez at an online meeting of the Scottish Trade Union Peace Network on 22 August 2024. Carlos discusses the nature of China’s foreign policy, dealing with common criticisms such as that China seeks to “undermine democracy” in Taiwan, that it is an aggressive and expansionist power in the South China Sea, and that its nuclear arsenal poses a serious threat to world peace. The speech goes on to analyse the theoretical basis and economic underpinnings of China’s foreign policy, observing that China’s rise “has never been based on dominating the land, labour, resources and markets of the rest of the world. It has never been driven by the expand-or-die logic of capital.”

Selective Democracy: US Hegemony And Global Consequences

The United States often claims to promote democracy and human rights, but its actions reveal a deeper agenda of spreading global hegemony, exposing the hypocrisy in its foreign policy. A glaring example is the Biden-Harris administration’s simultaneous rhetoric of humanitarian concern and unwavering support for Israel, despite the latter’s ongoing military actions in Gaza. This contradiction exposes the inauthenticity of the U.S.’s commitment to democratic principles and human rights, especially when these principles conflict with its strategic alliances. In a recent convention speech, President Joe Biden embarked on what can only be described as a journey into an alternative universe of political guile.

The Biggest Military Base Empire On Earth

The United States of America, unlike any other nation on Earth, maintains a massive network of foreign military bases around the world, more than 900 bases in more than 90 countries and territories. If the peace movement is serious about ending the United States’ and its allies’ warmaking, then this global constellation of bases must be curtailed. The permanent stationing of more than 220,000 U.S. troops, weapons arsenals, and thousands of aircraft, tanks, and ships in every corner of the globe makes the logistics for U.S. aggression, and that of its allies, quicker and more efficient. Bases also facilitate the proliferation of nuclear weapons, with the United States keeping nuclear bombs in five NATO member countries, and nuclear-capable planes, ships, and missile launchers in many others.

Colonialism As A Bulwark Against China

The 53rd annual Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), which opened Monday in Tonga, takes place amid a backdrop of simmering violence and confrontations between French security forces and protesters in New Caledonia that has so far left a dozen dead, as well as increased geopolitical tensions between China and the U.S. with its regional allies. On the agenda are talks on the impact of climate change. But for the West, the political thrust of the gathering is keeping Pacific nations outside of China’s orbit and enmeshed instead in Western military architecture. The five-day meeting, which runs until Friday, is being attended by the 18 leaders of strategically important islands and archipelagos spread across the vast Pacific Ocean, as well as think-tank analysts and politicians from sub-imperial countries like Australia and New Zealand who are sounding the alarm over the supposed dangers of “malign” Chinese influence in the region.

US Starts Another Round Of War Games In Korean Peninsula

The US and South Korea began yet another military drill in the Korean Peninsula this week, further heightening the possibility of nuclear confrontation and threatening peace and stability in the region. The Ulchi Freedom Shield, as the exercise is called, allegedly aims to strengthen both countries’ joint “defense capabilities” against nuclear power North Korea, as stated by the spokespersons of both nations earlier this month.

Venezuela: Convince, Confuse, Co-Opt – ‘Three C’S’ Of War Propaganda

If we wanted to summarize the mechanisms of “cognitive warfare”, which aims to condition the brain through the manipulation of emotions, we could speak of the “three C’s”: Convince, Confuse, Coopt, consolidate fake news in the common perception. From the “witch hunts” against rebellious women in past centuries, to the construction of the “internal enemy” and the obsession against communism in the various modulations produced by the last century, imperialism has refined its propagandistic techniques, relying on the cult of the ephemeral and the “end of history”, multiplied by social networks in the current century.

Not Losing Sight Of Imperialism

Right off the bat, it is important to get something out of the way: the Venezuelan elections were not “free and fair.” There is no way for that to happen in a country under a brutal blockade, incessant economic terrorism that punishes a project that refused to bow to Washington’s neocolonial diktat. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that Venezuelans went to the polls with a gun to their heads. Fighting back against US-led imperialism and its corporate media artillery begins by recognizing this vastly uneven playing field. Though the recent vote did leave questions to be answered, to zero in on the electoral controversy while ignoring or downplaying the context of US hybrid warfare is an intellectually and politically dishonest exercise.
