Colombia Labels US Military Ops ‘Aggression’ In Latin America

Through a message posted Sunday, August 10, on social media, Colombian President Gustavo Petro reaffirmed his strong support for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. This followed recent threats from the Trump administration against the Venezuelan government, which is trying to link Maduro with drug trafficking, and the discovery by Bolivarian authorities of arsenals of weapons belonging to terrorist groups linked to the extreme right. Petro emphatically declared that “Colombia and Venezuela are the same people, the same flag, the same history.” He emphasized that “any military operation that is not approved by our sister countries is an aggression against Latin America and the Caribbean.”

US Increases Bounty On President Nicolás Maduro To $50 Million

The Venezuelan government has said that the increase in the reward for the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro by US Attorney General Pam Bondi is “ridiculous” and that it is part of a “propaganda operation” and a “desperate distraction” from the internal problems facing the United States. Bondi published a video on August 7, announcing that the US Department of Justice and Department of State are offering USD 50 million for “information leading to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro”. This is not the first time the US government has tried to pressure the Bolivarian government in this way. In 2020, the US Department of Justice offered USD 15 million for Maduro’s arrest. The accusations were based on alleged acts of “narco-terrorism” by the Venezuelan government.

People’s Summit For Korea Spotlights Role Of US Imperialism

The Summit was organized by Nodutdol and convened by a list of other Korean and U.S.-based groups, including United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC). Nodutdol describes itself as “an organization of diasporic Koreans and comrades organizing for a world free of imperialism and for Korea’s reunification and national liberation.” With the Summit, Nodutdol — with a majority of members below 30 years of age — galvanized the Korean movement in the U.S. in an anti-imperialist direction. By changing the fulcrum point of its movement from the start of the Korean war in 1950 back to 1945, when U.S. imperialists replaced Japanese imperialists, Nodutdol opened up a whole new range of understanding of the struggle for an independent and united Korea. It’s not just an anti-war struggle but a systemic fight between two class systems.

On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped a uranium-core atomic bomb on Hiroshima, instantly incinerating most of the city. The nuclear blast, radiation, and resulting firestorms killed 90,000 people immediately, with the death toll surpassing 100,000 by the end of 1945. Just three days later, on August 9, the U.S. struck again, obliterating Nagasaki with a plutonium bomb. The explosion killed 40,000 on impact, while another 70,000 perished by year’s end from burns, injuries, and radiation poisoning. Tens of thousands more later succumbed to radiation sickness, bringing the total death toll to nearly 200,000. Even 80 years later, survivors and their descendants continue to suffer from the bombings’ horrific aftereffects, cancers, birth defects, and generational trauma. Yet the Japanese and U.S. governments have denied them full state compensation and proper medical care, abandoning those who endured this imperialist atrocity.

US economic wars have killed more than 560,000 people each year for the past ten years, over half of those killed are children five years of age and younger. This number is higher than the number of people who die in military conflicts. The scholasticism of the academic and the hushed tones of the diplomat are silenced as the bomb and the bank wage war against the planet. After authorising the atom bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima (Japan) on 6 August 1945, US President Harry S. Truman announced on the radio: ‘If [the Japanese] do not now accept our terms, they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth’.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview published on 31 July that Tehran is seeking financial compensation for Israel’s war, an explanation on why Iran was attacked during negotiations, and security guarantees for any resumption of nuclear talks with Washington. Araghchi told the Financial Times (FT) that Iran will not accept going back to “business as usual” after Israel launched its unprovoked war on the country in mid-June. “They should explain why they attacked us in the middle of … negotiations, and they have to ensure that they are not going to repeat that [during future talks]. And they have to compensate [Iran for] the damage that they have done,” Araghchi added.

As video after video of horrendous atrocities spreads on social media from the governorate of Suwayda in Syria, evidence indicates that the Syrian government’s sectarian slaughter of the Druze religious minority was orchestrated by the US and Israel. The massacres are part of a broader effort to force the Druze to seek protection from Israel and thereby give the Jewish state a pretext to further occupy Syria’s south, establish David’s Corridor, and keep the country weak and divided. Syrian president Ahmad al-Sharaa, the former ISIS commander long groomed by the US and UK to take power in Damascus, proved a reliable agent in executing the plan.

The Donald Trump administration has launched many frontal attacks on multilateral organizations and international law. However, these clear violations of international law are nothing new for US presidents. Opposition to multilateralism has been a bipartisan feature of US politics for many decades. In February, Trump withdrew the United States from the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), repeating an action he had done back in 2018, during his first term. The Trump administration also attacked the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and announced that he had cut US funding for both UNRWA and the UNHRC.

When the United States was carrying out its genocidal campaign against Vietnam in the 1960s and 70s, Canada welcomed tens of thousands of American war resisters to this country. Their actions, along with peace movements in the US and around the world, not only helped to end the war, but they may have even forced President Richard Nixon to abandon a plan to escalate the conflict with the use of tactical nuclear weapons. In light of the serious challenges we face today—including the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, rising poverty and inequality, and the deepening environmental crisis—it is more important than ever to remember, and draw inspiration from, the millions of Americans who resisted the US war in Vietnam, as well as in Cambodia and Laos. Just as importantly, we must remember the meaningful victories won by these peace movements.

Today, more and more US government officials, especially those in Donald Trump’s two administrations, have invoked the 200-year-old colonial Monroe Doctrine to claim that Latin America is supposedly Washington’s “backyard”, that the US empire should control it, and that China and Russia cannot have relations with the countries in the region. Given that the US government constantly violates the sovereignty of countries in Latin America, it makes perfect sense that several governments in the region have deepened their partnership with China and Russia, because they see that Beijing and Moscow actually respect their independence and have helped them to economically develop, while Washington has only sought to exploit them.

A confidential memorandum obtained by Periodista Digital reveals a controversial agreement that would place Armenia's Zangezur Corridor under US control for 99 years, effectively surrendering key national territory to US private military companies and facilitating unimpeded Azerbaijani access to Nakhchivan and Turkiye. The document, titled “Memorandum of Understanding on the Creation of the 'Trump Bridge' Transport Corridor,” has reportedly been approved by Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the US, according to the Spanish newspaper.
