Jimmy Carter, out of office, had the courage to call out the “abominable oppression and persecution” and “strict segregation” of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza in his 2006 book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.” He dedicated himself to monitoring elections, including his controversial defense of the 2006 election of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, and championed human rights around the globe. He lambasted the American political process as an “oligarchy” in which “unlimited political bribery” created “a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors.”

December 30, 2024 - The Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) is concerned and outraged that four Afro-Ecuadorian children, between the ages of 11 and 15, can go missing for almost two weeks after coming into contact with members of the armed forces without any concerns or official statements provided by government officials. The children (the “Guayaquil Four”) are from the Las Malvinas neighborhood, a largely Black and impoverished community, in Ecuador’s largest city, Guayaquil. BAP supports the demands of AfroEcuadorian and human rights organizations for the safe return of these boys and a transparent investigation.

Four children in Guayaquil, Ecuador, disappeared after they were arrested by state forces on December 8. The news of their parents desperately searching for their underage children has dominated the news in Ecuador for the last several weeks even amid the festive season. On December 8, Ismael and Josué Arroyo (15 and 14 years old), Saúl Arboleda (15 years old), and Steven Medina (11 years old) were detained by a military contingent patrolling the area where the boys were playing football. The four young Afro-Ecuadorian boys have not been seen since then.

People within the Indigenous Māori community of “New Zealand” have been protesting a racist bill that was recently introduced by that country’s right-wing government. On Nov. 14, Minister of Regulation David Seymour introduced a bill known as the “Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill” or the “Treaty Principles Bill.” The controversial bill would reopen a historic treaty, signed in 1840, known to the Māori people as “Te Tiriti o Waitangi,” commonly referred to as the “Treaty of Waitangi.” The binding agreement is part of New Zealand’s national Constitution, and it features terms and conditions that grant land rights and special recognition to the Māori people.

New Orleans, LA – On Tuesday, December 17, community organizations and New Orleanians impacted by police misconduct or police violence united at the Consent Decree Fairness Hearing to demand that Judge Susie Morgan rule against the New Orleans Police Department sustainment plan. The consent decree is the federal oversight instituted in 2013. That year, the Department of Justice found the NOPD to be practicing unlawful misconduct and unconstitutional policing. Different community groups rallied outside against the motion. The people came together around five points of unity.

Twenty years ago this month, on December 10, 2004, former San Jose Mercury News investigative reporter Gary Webb died by apparent suicide, following a stretch of depression. The subject of the 2014 film Kill the Messenger, Webb had left the newspaper in 1997 after his career was systematically destroyed because he had done what journalists are supposed to do: speak truth to power. In August 1996, Webb penned a three-part series for the Mercury News (8/18–20/96) that documented how profits from the sale of crack cocaine in Los Angeles in the 1980s had been funneled to the Contras, the right-wing, CIA-backed mercenary army responsible for helping to perpetrate, to borrow Noam Chomsky’s words, “large-scale terrorist war” against Nicaragua.

Serving as ambassadors and messengers, runners took off from Alaska and Patagonia, some covering up to 16,000 kilometers (10,000 miles) across treacherous landscapes in seven months. Along the journey, they collected sacred staffs imbued with prayers from almost 200 native nations. The runners, also known as chasquis, the name for messengers in the Inca empire, said they embarked on the journey to honor ancestral wisdom, restore balance with mother nature, strengthen the identity of Indigenous peoples, and promote global solidarity.

The most financially costly climate disasters around the world in 2024 produced $229 billion in damages and killed 2,000 people, according to Counting the Cost 2024: A year of climate breakdown, the most recent analysis of insurance payouts by nonprofit Christian Aid. Three-quarters of these calamities occurred in the United States, reported The Guardian. “Behind the billion-dollar figures are countless lost lives and livelihoods,” said Dr. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher for World Weather Attribution at Imperial College London, in a press release from Christian Aid.

On December 29, 2023, South Africa invoked the Genocide Convention against Israel at the International Court of Justice. To some people, this came out of the blue. Some are aware there was a concerted effort to that end through the fall of 2023 which involved myself and others. Few are aware that the story goes back further. And tragically few are aware that there are clear steps that can be taken now to give it force which the US government has insidiously undermined. In 2000, Prof. Francis Boyle published the piece “Palestine Should Sue Israel for Genocide before the International Court of Justice.” Boyle reiterated such calls periodically, particularly when Israel would decimate Gaza.

Kamal Adwan Hospital Chief Taken To Notorious Israeli Torture Camp

Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital Dr Hussam Abu Safia has been taken to Israel's notorious torture camp, Sde Teiman, following his abduction by Israeli forces at the Kamal Adwan Hospital in north Gaza, CNN reported on 30 December. Dr Abu Safia has not been seen publicly since his abduction from the hospital during an Israeli raid on 27 December that caused the hospital to cease functioning. Medical staff told CNN that Israeli forces started a fire in the hospital and that they were all rounded up outside and ordered to remove their clothes over the course of several hours before being forced to leave.
