Chile’s Failure To Bury Neoliberalism Led To Pinochetista President

Stunning, though expected, on December 14, a majority of Chileans (58 per cent to 41 per cent) elected far-right Republican Party candidate Jose Antonio Kast as president for the 2026-30 term, defeating the Communist candidate Jeannette Jara in the second round. A strong admirer of the Pinochet dictatorship, Kast is also an open supporter of Argentina’s Javier Milei and Donald Trump, and maintains close links to the Trump-affiliated Heritage Foundation. His victory presents a significant opportunity for US imperialism.

The Gaza Genocide Was Not A One-Off

The architecture of extermination: Why the Gaza genocide is premeditated and repeatable. Suppose we accept the fiction that none of us expected Israel to launch a full-scale genocide in Gaza—a premeditated campaign to erase the Strip and exterminate a significant portion of its inhabitants. Let us pretend that nearly eighty years of relentless massacres were not a prelude to this moment, and that Israel had never before sought the physical destruction of the Palestinian people as outlined by the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Germany: Imprisoned ‘Palestine Action’ Activists Face Harassment

For years, Palestine activists in Germany have looked to Britain with a sense of astonishment. The state that promised Palestine to Zionist settler colonialism in the 1917 Balfour Declaration is scarcely less pro-Israel than the Federal Republic of Germany, with its so-called Staatsräson (‘reason of state‘) that proclaims unconditional solidarity with Israel – albeit without ever having been codified into law. And yet, solidarity in Britain appears – at least from this vantage point – to be more vibrant, broader, and above all more effective.

Eastern Europe: Resistance Grows To Militarism, Israeli Arms Production

As Western European elites scramble to maintain influence amid waning backing from the Trump administration and growing domestic opposition to pro-militarization, anti-people policies, countries in Eastern Europe are faced with a different set of dynamics. Starting from distinct political and economic conditions, movements across the region are organizing against expected cuts and deepening ties with Israel’s genocidal regime, while also pushing back against local elites seeking to profit from the EU’s expanding armament agenda. Peoples Dispatch spoke with Oana Uiorean and Vlad Mureşan of the Elbit OUT! campaign in Romania about the specific challenges facing left movements in the region and efforts to build strong Palestine solidarity campaigns in Eastern Europe.

Yemeni Resistance Leader Vows To Target Israeli Presence In Somalia

The leader of Yemen’s Ansarallah resistance movement, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, warned in a speech on 28 December that any potential Israeli presence in Somaliland will be considered a “military target” for the Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF).  The speech came as several African, Arab, and Muslim states condemned Israel’s decision last week to recognize the sovereignty of the separatist Republic of Somaliland, which Somalia views as one of its federal states.  Israel’s recognition of Somaliland is “a hostile stance targeting Somalia and its African surroundings, as well as Yemen and the Red Sea and the countries on its shores,” Houthi said on Sunday.

Ukraine: Negotiations At A Standstill, The War Progresses

The speed of progress Russian troops are making has increased. During the last weeks several significant Ukrainian cities – Kupiansk, Siversk, Pokrovsk, Myronograd, Huleipole – have fallen into Russian hands. The Ukrainian command seems to ignore this reality. It took weeks to admit that Siverks had fallen. It still claims to hold ground in Myrnograd and Huleipole. It loudly claims a successful counteroffensive in Kupiansk while its troops there get bombed to smithereens. Meanwhile Russia has widely succeeded in de-energizing Ukraine. Electricity in Ukraine’s big cities is limited to less than 12 hours per day.

World Bank Miracle: How To Show Rising Poverty As Declining!

Of late, there have been several academic papers and media write-ups on the World Bank’s 2025 claim of steeply declining extreme poverty in the world, especially in Asia. It would be wonderful if this was true, but it is not true. This claim is spurious, arising from a statistical legerdemain that the World Bank and governments have practiced for many decades, ignoring all criticism. For half a century, they have repeatedly underestimated poverty line expenditure until by now their poverty lines are so incredibly low that they do not permit human survival.

The Lie We Keep Telling About Wounded Knee

Today marks the 135th anniversary of the Massacre of Wounded Knee, which occurred during the wintry week between Christmas and New Year’s in 1890. Nine days before the massacre that left hundreds of Sioux men, women and children dead, an obscure weekly newspaper in South Dakota published an editorial following the death of Hunkpapa Lakota leader Sitting Bull. In the opinion piece, L. Frank Baum, publisher of the Saturday Pioneer, wrote: “The Whites, by law of conquest, by justice of civilization, are masters of the American continent, and the best safety of the frontier settlements will be secured by the total annihilation of the few remaining Indians. Why not annihilation? Their glory has fled.”

2025 Must Be The End Of Inane Rule Of Climate ‘Optimism’

Allow yourself a very brief thought-experiment… What if 2025 had been the year the UK finally met its legally binding commitment to eliminate dangerous carbon emissions?… What if the mass climate mobilisations of the late 2010s had succeeded in forcing governments to act at the speed science demanded? In that alternate reality, life would almost certainly feel calmer, safer and more predictable than it does now. As 2025 draws to a close, however, we are confronted by a harder truth. Britain is nowhere near zero carbon.

Understanding The Relationship Between Zionism And Fascism

Despite the mutual admiration of Zionists and fascists, both historically and in the present, it is generally considered unhelpful to characterize Zionism as fascism. However, viewing fascism from the perspective of the Black radical tradition, with its emphasis on racialism, colonialism and imperialism, rooted in supremacist ideas of western civilization, helps make fascism a useful concept for understanding Zionism. In popular definitions of fascism it is detached from nationalism and associated most strongly with authoritarianism. Israel’s self-presentation as a liberal democracy, the result of a national self-determination project, and even an anticolonial Indigenous manifestation, conflicts with dominant ideas of what fascism is.

Syrian Alawites Begin Mass Protests Against Government Violence

Syrian citizens of the Alawite minority sect took to the streets on 28 December to protest against government violence and sectarian persecution, in line with a call made by the community’s religious leader a day earlier. Members of the minority sect protested in the Alawite neighborhoods of the central governorate of Homs, and in several towns and cities on the country’s coast, including Tartous, Jableh, and Latakia. Protests also erupted in Hama governorate, including in the city of Masyaf. Alawite Syrians held up banners reading “Federalism is the solution” and “the blood of Alawites is not cheap,” among other slogans.

Hunger Striker Loses Ability To Stand As Strike Hits Day 55

Prisoners for Palestine have announced that hunger striker T Hoxha has lost the ability to stand. Hunger striker Heba Muraisi, meanwhile, is losing the ability to speak. The hunger strikers have endured 18 months in prison without trial. As a consequence of this and other instances of alleged mistreatment, they recently launched legal action against justice secretary David Lammy. Notably, these activists were imprisoned before the government proscribed Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation.

Venezuela: UN Report Demonstrates Illegality Of US Blockade

The Venezuelan government stated that the recent report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) constitutes a resounding legal and political condemnation of the armed blockade imposed by the United States. The report demonstrates that this policy gravely violates international law and the Charter of the United Nations. On Wednesday, December 24, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil highlighted that the statement by independent UN experts confirms what Venezuela has been stating for years: that Washington is carrying out a colonial-style strategy of threats, force, and plunder against the nation.

US Bombs Target ISIL In Nigeria: What’s Really Going On?

The United States has launched “powerful and deadly” strikes against groups it claims are affiliated with ISIL (ISIS) in Nigeria, President Donald Trump said on Thursday. The unprecedented Christmas Day strikes came after weeks of accusations from Trump and top Republicans about an alleged “Christian genocide” they say has been enabled by the Nigerian government. They represent the first known direct US military intervention in the troubled, conflict-racked country. Neither side has shared precise information about the identity of the targets struck and the results of the strikes.

Digital Bandung: Why The Global South Must Seize Its Data Future

A new pattern is reshaping global digital politics, and African nations must pay attention. The US–Malaysia trade agreement, signed in October 2025, highlights a strategy in which powerful countries design rules that give technology companies broad access to the data of other nations. The agreement instructs Malaysia to “ensure the cross-border transfer of data by electronic means across trusted borders” and prohibits “digital services taxes … that discriminate against US companies.” These clauses establish a legal structure that positions US corporations at the center of Malaysia’s digital economy and places significant limits on national control.
