Anti-imperialists, socialists, and peace and justice communities across Africa and the world are inspired by the newly federated Alliance of Sahel States and by its leaders, especially Burkina Faso’s charismatic Ibrahim Traoré. Seeing this groundswell of support, Paul Kagame’s propagandists have rushed to liken him to Traoré. Others may sincerely imagine a likeness that doesn’t in fact exist. Kagame has ruled Rwanda for 30 years, since seizing power at the end of his four-year war to re-establish Tutsi dominance in July 1994. Traoré has been in power for less than three years, since seizing power in a popular coup in September 2022.

On Wednesday, Israeli forces in the West Bank opened fire in the direction of a delegation of European, Arab, and Asian diplomats. In yet another mark of Israeli hubris, the Israeli military said it “regrets the inconvenience.” The timing of this incident is not coincidental. Earlier this week, the European Union, many of its member states, and other Western countries issued statements and took steps that appeared to finally represent concrete actions to pressure Israel to change its behavior in Gaza and the West Bank. The question is whether that is really what happened. It started with a letter from a coalition of states that fund international humanitarian efforts.

Most of Mohammed Mohsen’s neighbors live in a state of deprivation and hunger, reliant on the World Food Programme for daily survival. When he is able to get donations from individuals abroad, Mohsen delivers food baskets to his community in the Al-Jawf governorate in northeastern Yemen. In pictures he sent me from his most recent distribution two months ago, thin children — one wearing a flower print dress, another a yellow beanie — stand next to large white sacks of flour, sugar and rice and yellow jugs of cooking oil. When he makes these deliveries to families, he says, ​“they feel happy and joyful, especially the children, and they hope it will continue.”

US Banana Giant Chiquita Fires Thousands Of Striking Workers

The U.S.-headquartered banana giant Chiquita said Thursday that it moved to fire thousands of Panamanian workers who walked off the job last month as part of nationwide protests against the right-wing government's unpopular reforms to the nation's pension system. Citing an unnamed source close to Chiquita, Reuters reported that the mass firings are expected to impact around 5,000 of the company's 6,500 Panamanian workers. José Raúl Mulino, Panama's right-wing president, defended the banana giant formerly known as United Fruit, accusing striking workers of unlawful "intransigence." The company estimates that the strike, which began in late April, has cost it at least $75 million.

I’ve previously written for Canadian Dimension about a housing struggle I am involved in around a vacant site in Toronto’s Downtown East. Our community-based organization, 230 Fightback, is challenging the developer KingSett Capital’s plans to build luxury housing at 214-230 Sherbourne Street, and demanding that social housing be created instead. Faced with relentless community pressure and a faltering housing market, KingSett offered to sell the site to the city but only at a price that would cover the costs of its speculative antics. For its part, city hall adamantly refused to apply the kind of pressure that could compel the company to reduce the price.

At the start of 2025, Sudan registered an alarming debt-to-GDP (Gross Domestic Product) ratio of 252%. This means that the country’s total public debt is 2.5 times the size of its entire annual economic output. It is not hard to understand why Sudan is in such dire straits: as we outlined in last week’s newsletter, the country has been engulfed in a conflict for decades, which has severely disrupted any possibility of economic growth and financial stability. Yet, in a way, Sudan – one of the richest countries in terms of resources but poorest in terms of household income and wealth – is also representative of what has been happening on the African continent.

The Empire Never Died

There’s long been a debate over whether Britain’s Empire — the largest the world has ever known — was a good or bad thing. There’s another question though – did it really end? In some ways, obviously it did. Some 62 territories have gained independence from the U.K. in recent decades, mainly during the period from India’s fight for independence in 1947 until Zimbabwe’s in 1980. But King Charles is still the head of state of 14 Commonwealth territories, from Australia to Saint Lucia, and the U.K. controls a further 14 “Overseas Territories,” such as Gibraltar and on the island of Cyprus. The United Nations Special Committee on Decolonisation has a list of 17 territories which are “non-self governing,” or colonies in all but name. In 10 of them, the U.K. is the current administering power.

European development aid has entered a new phase of the European Union’s neocolonialist agenda. Its “Global Gateway” plan is a wishlist for infrastructure projects to be launched across the world by European companies, backed by liberal reforms to pave the way. At its heart: Africa, where at least half of all investments are set to land. The Global Gateway was introduced by the EU’s technocratic institutions in Brussels as a branding exercise for a new direction for European aid in the world, following the cracks the COVID-19 pandemic revealed in Europe’s supply chains. In effect, this plan has sought to secure access to raw materials as well as energy with a view to reducing reliance on China’s minerals and Russia’s gas.

Veterans Reflect On The Meaning Of Memorial Day

This Memorial Day weekend, Veterans For Peace is calling on its members and friends to reflect on the gravity of the day, whose official purpose is to “honor all those who died in service to the U.S. during peacetime and war.” Veterans For Peace chooses to honor ALL who have died in wars, both combatants and civilians. Our hope is that a sober accounting of the casualties of war will mitigate against the tendency to turn Memorial Day – like Veterans Day – into a patriotic celebration of U.S. militarism. We remember the words of President Eisenhower, who during World War II, was the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe: "War is a grim, cruel business, a business justified only as a means of sustaining the forces of good against those of evil". He also famously stated, "I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity.”

With nuclear negotiations between the Trump administration and Iran’s Reformist government at a standstill, I held two separate, lengthy background conversations in Tehran this past week with a pair of seasoned Iranian diplomats with detailed knowledge of the talks in Muscat, Oman. Like most Iranians, the diplomats were eager for a durable deal that would provide sanctions relief. But they said their side could not seem to break through to a Trump team they described as dithering, divided, distracted by other conflicts, and incapable of holding to a consistent position. Worse, as the negotiations drag on, the Trump administration is defaulting toward the hardline Israeli position which rejects all uranium enrichment, even for civilian purposes, violating a right Tehran considers sacrosanct.

US Quietly Moves Bombers As Israel Prepares To Hit Iran

As threats of an Israeli strike on Iran grow louder, the United States is making quiet but unmistakable moves of its own. Over the past month, Washington has quietly repositioned strategic bombers and fighter squadrons to Diego Garcia, a remote U.S. military outpost in the Indian Ocean, squarely within striking distance of Tehran. The official rationale is force protection. But the scale and nature of the deployments have sparked speculation that Washington is laying the groundwork for potential military involvement in an Israeli-led operation, or, at the very least, sending a message to Tehran that it won’t stand in the way.

Microsoft Bans Use Of ‘Gaza, Palestine’ In Internal Emails

Microsoft has implemented a policy blocking employee emails containing the words “Palestine,” “Gaza,” or “genocide” on its internal Exchange servers, Drop Site News reported on 22 May. According to No Azure for Apartheid, a group of pro-Palestine Microsoft employees, an automated filter silently prevents such emails from reaching recipients. The filter became effective on Wednesday following Microsoft’s Build developer conference, which faced repeated disruptions by the activist group, Drop Site added. Microsoft has faced internal dissent from employees upset over the company’s collaboration with the Israeli military in its ongoing war on Palestinians in Gaza, which scholars widely consider genocide.

Earlier this month, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser introduced legislation to repeal a law that gradually increases the minimum wage for hospitality workers who rely heavily on customer tips for their bread and butter. If the D.C. City Council approves Bowser’s proposal, it would represent the second time that the city’s elected officials have overturned referendums in which a majority of voters endorsed pay raises for restaurant workers. Fifty-six percent of voters approved the initiative in 2018 , and endorsed it by an even wider margin, 74 percent , when it was put on the ballot four years later.

Will Mexican GM Workers Get A Fair Union Election?

Workers at a second General Motors assembly plant in Mexico are campaigning to join SINTTIA (the National Auto Workers Union), the independent union that won a landmark election to represent workers at another Mexican GM plant in 2022. The 6,500 workers at the San Luis Potosí plant produce the GMC Terrain and the Chevrolet Trax and Equinox SUVs. Days after SINTTIA filed to represent workers on April 21, a second union, Carlos Leone, began collecting signatures, in what appears to be an effort to ward off a legitimate union at the facility. SINTTIA supporters allege the rival union is being assisted by GM management.

When David Hogg announced that he would actively seek to challenge certain House Democrat incumbents during the 2026 primary election cycle, responses ranged from support, to shock, to chagrin. Making Hogg’s proclamation to, “replace asleep at the wheel Democrats, ” even more controversial is that it was announced just months after he was elected as a Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), the executive arm of the Democrat party. Hogg also expressed his intention to raise $20 million through his Leaders we Deserve group to challenge incumbent Democrats who hold “safe seats” as part of his overarching mechanism to establish a new generation of Democrat Party leaders.
