Communities From Global South Know What Democracy Is

The contrast could not be starker. In 2024, with over 60 countries covering half the world’s population going to the polls, there was a clear tendency to vote in right-wing political parties with thin democratic pretensions. In many countries including India, USA, Argentina, and Russia, and in the European Parliament, the trend was clear. A powerful counterpoint to this was provided by a modest but inspirational gathering of Indigenous peoples and local communities from over 20 countries, in South Africa, in February 2025. They spoke about how their foundations were not hegemonic power and profits, but justice, equity, and respect not only amongst peoples but also with the rest of nature.

Can G-7 Contend With Powerful Anti-Colonial, Anti-Capitalist Resistance?

Anti-colonial, anti-capitalist, and environmental defense movements have often succeeded in transforming global politics and economics. Too often, however, technocratic and triumphalist narratives from the Global North obscure this reality. Today, however, resistance to colonization and environmental destruction are converging into a powerful movement that may well derail Canadian prime minister Mark Carney’s hopes to harmonize global policies around capitalism/colonialism as-usual among the Group of Seven (G-7). The annual summit of the US, UK, Germany, Italy, France, Canada and Japan is taking place at from June 15-17.

Solidarity Against ICE And The Entire State Apparatus

The devolution of Black politics has never been so evident and could not happen at a worse moment. While the crisis of legitimacy accelerates, and provides opportunities for movement politics, many Black people have declared themselves to be uninterested in political engagement or even worse, to be in solidarity with state oppression. Social media is replete with examples of Black people declaring that they don’t care about genocide in Gaza, or that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has nothing to do with them or even that they are glad other people are targeted for deportation.

Pedagogy And Class Power: Reclaiming Freire In An Age Of Reaction

In the early decades of the twenty-first century, education has become a frontline in the ideological struggle over the future of global capitalism. The coordinated assault on teachers, curriculum, and institutions of public learning is not an isolated culture war but a structural feature of neoliberal governance. In this context, the pedagogical philosophy of Paulo Freire demands renewed attention—not as an abstract theory of “engaged learning,” but as a revolutionary praxis situated in a broader Marxist tradition of class struggle.¹ Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed, first published in 1970, emerged not from elite seminar rooms but from literacy campaigns among Brazil’s dispossessed.

Trump’s Manufactured Crisis And The Urgency Of Strategic Nonviolence

We can see on the streets now the precarious situation we’ve studied around the world: the need for mass resistance to state violence and assaults on democracy, and the concurrent need to maintain nonviolent discipline in a dire and escalating situation. Following the example of other authoritarians, Donald Trump wants us to burn cars. He wants us to throw rocks. He wants images of chaos — especially violence against police or National Guard troops — to flood the evening news. These are precisely the results he wants: to manufacture chaos as a means of justifying repression and extending his authoritarian raids on our communities.

The Left Must Defend PSL And All Of Those Facing State Repression

To the surprise of perhaps no one, the tragedy of McCarthyism is being played out yet again as farce by the unimaginative buffoons running the U.S. congress. On Wednesday, June 11, The U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Crime and Counter-Terrorism, chaired by Republican Josh Hawley, sent what appears to be a slightly modified form letter to the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) and several other organizations. In the letters, Hawley accuses these groups of fomenting civil unrest and demands that they immediately “cease and desist any further involvement” in the ongoing protests in Los Angeles. The letters also provided a bullet-point list demanding that the groups preserve records going back to November of 2024, including internal communications, emails, and text messages, suggesting that the groups may be formally investigated by the Senate in the near future.

Oppression Breeds Resistance, Organization Sustains It

As community defenders, organizers, and residents resisted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles this past weekend, the state has responded by calling in the FBI and Border Patrol SWAT units, utilizing Blackhawk helicopters to deliver munitions and military-grade equipment, and mobilizing the National Guard and Marines to quell the justified uprising. As our comrades in SoCal BAP have clearly stated, this is domestic warfare. The connection could not be clearer between the specific kidnappings orchestrated by ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in Los Angeles on one hand, and the broad militarization of our cities and neighborhoods on the other.

Systemic Decay And The Economic Foundation Of American Fascism

If you live in the United States and feel like everything is caving in around you, like you are being attacked and fleeced from every angle, like you can’t breathe, like you can’t ever seem to catch a break despite doing everything seemingly right, like you are on the verge of a mental-health crisis and/or homelessness, your feelings are justified. We are living in the middle of widespread societal breakdown. We are witnessing the erosion of an empire. We are experiencing the effects of a rotten system (capitalism) coming to its inevitable conclusion. Simply put, the capitalist class and their two political parties have run out of ways to steal from us. Because we have nothing left for them to take. So, the system is responding like a vampire who is unable to find the blood it needs to survive… erratic, rabid, frenzied, and increasingly desperate and violent, while frantically searching for new avenues of exploitation to keep it churning.

The Los Angeles Protests Are An Act Of Self-Defense

Early Sunday evening in Los Angeles, as the city was under siege by federal anti-immigration forces, aided by local law enforcement, Mayor Karen Bass was holding a press conference. Out in the streets, a reporter noted, it appeared that the Los Angeles Police Department was “cooperating” with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, “using flashbangs and less-lethal munitions” to push people engaged in “peaceful protest” away from a federal building being used as an ICE detention center. The reporter asked if Mayor Bass would comment on this cooperation, which is against city policy.

ICE Now Expanding Into Local Law Enforcement

Trump’s violent ICE agency is about to escalate its war against any or all “illegals” in a dramatic fashion while engaging local law enforcement in its repression. And this should come as no surprise to us. Every authoritarian regime in recent history has formed its own elite corps of feared special police and/or military units to suppress dissent and act as the spearhead of state repression. The Revolutionary Guard and the Morality Police in Iran. The GRU and the Spetsnaz in Russia. Saddam Hussein’s Republican Guard. The GOPE in Mexico. DINA in Chile. The AAA and the Federal Police during the Argentine dictatorship were inseparable from the horrific death squads. And, of course, the SS in Nazi Germany.

Where Is The Artificial Intelligence Safety Movement?

Whether or not we realize it, artificial intelligence is reshaping the world with breathtaking speed. Promoted as a panacea to cure diseases, revolutionize industries and tackle the world’s most intractable problems, AI is also quietly displacing workers, amplifying biases and creating surveillance systems pervasive and pernicious enough for any dystopian. As if that weren’t enough, there’s the prospect of super intelligent AI outpacing human control altogether. So where are the humans in all this? Where are the protests, the people out on the streets, the demands for safeguards, for oversight, for input from normal people?

Please Ensure That The Planet Does Not Burn

It is important to emphasise the fact that environmental degradation has not been caused by humans in general, but by a certain system of organising society which we call capitalism. The problem with the term Anthropocene (which began to be used first by scientists, then by social scientists) is that it implies that humans – as an undifferentiated whole – have created the ecological crisis we are facing. This subtly downplays the role of the capitalist system and its accompanying class and national divides. However, data shows that humanity is using the equivalent of about 1.7 Earths to sustain our current consumption levels.

Leaving The Democrats For Good

In the movie Network, newsman Howard Beale famously shouted (and made a living from it) “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” That’s how I feel today. I hate the ugly, angry, and divisive politics of 2025. And I hate the two major parties that have been thrust upon us as the only choices we have. They’re two sides of the same coin, even if they pretend to be polar political opposites. We seem to hear constantly about the “radical left” and the “fascist right.” Nothing could be further from the truth. As background, I was raised in a solid, middle-of-the-road, pro-labor Democratic family. My paternal grandfather kept a framed photo of Franklin Roosevelt on top of the TV until the day he died.

Striking Tenants Withhold Rent For 247 Days And Win

Tenants in Kansas City are declaring victory after eight months on rent strike—the longest such action in the city’s history. Residents of Independence Towers, an 11-story building with a troubled history, won a contract with their landlord that stabilizes rents and imposes deadlines to complete plumbing and other major repairs. To reach the deal, tenants formed a union, waged a months-long pressure campaign and, ultimately, negotiated through an elected bargaining committee — an outcome that lends momentum to efforts to adapt labor union strategies for housing fights.

Rising Temperatures And The Rising Need For A Black Radical Lens

This past weekend, over 500 Black folk and their comrades descended upon Indianapolis, Indiana, for the Second National Black Radical Organizing Conference (NBROC). The goal, in part, of the Second NBROC, in the words of the conference’s organizers, was to “create a space to discuss, debate, train, assess, and create a collective way forward for Black/African/New Afrikan organizations and organizers who believe that our struggle is paramount to our survival.” On the question of the survival of Black/African people the world over, climate change (or as we refer to it, the racial capitalocene ) represents a profound and salient challenge formed and sustained by root causes -white “supremacy” ideology, colonization, and patriarchy (which is to say racial capitalism) - we as Black, African, and all oppressed people have been struggling against for multiple millenniums.
