US Abandons ‘Hamas Disarmament’ Demands In Gaza Truce Talks

The US government has dropped its demand for Hamas to disarm as a precondition for a ceasefire in Gaza, Egyptian sources revealed to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed. “US negotiators conveyed to Egyptian intermediaries that the issue of Hamas's disarmament could be addressed at a later stage, rather than being an immediate requirement for a ceasefire agreement,” the Qatari-owned news outlet reports. The unnamed source added that US President Donald Trump's “inner circle” is convinced of the “futility” of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's strategy to free the captives via military pressure, believing that no military option will help save the Israeli captives in Gaza.

Want To Stop Trump’s Attacks On The NLRB?

May Day 2025 in the United States came amid the most aggressive assault on U.S. workers in a century. The federal agencies that provide some minimal protection against corporate power — the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and many more — are being systematically destroyed. On May 1, hundreds of thousands protested at roughly 1,300 actions across the United States. Under the broad theme “Workers Over Billionaires,” they condemned union-busting, austerity, climate destruction, anti-immigrant terror, the U.S.-Israeli genocide, and other facets of the assault.

Trump’s Tariffs Are Uniting China, Europe, Japan, South Korea, And ASEAN

Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that the US government has what he called a “grand encirclement” strategy aimed at isolating and weakening China. Trump hit China with tariffs of 145%, imposing what is essentially a trade embargo. The Trump administration wanted to pressure Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and India to follow the US and “approach China as a group”, Bessent said, according to Bloomberg. This strategy is clearly failing. The finance ministers and central bank governors of China, Japan, South Korea, and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) met in Italy on May 4 and published a joint statement pledging “to further strengthen regional financial cooperation”.

President Trump’s Proposal To Eliminate Income Taxes: Can It Be Done?

In February, President Trump said that tariffs would generate so much income that Americans would no longer need to pay income taxes. The latest plan, according to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, is to abolish income taxes for people who earn less than $150,000 yearly. That move would affect roughly 75% of workers, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. On its face, this could narrow the wealth gap by boosting disposable income for low- and middle-income households without raising taxes on the wealthy — a politically clever alternative to progressive tax hikes.

Trump Waves White Flag, Ends Yemen War In Omani-Mediated Truce

US President Donald Trump announced on 6 May that Washington will put a stop to its illegal war against Yemen, claiming that the Ansarallah-led Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) “don't want to fight anymore.” When pressed by reporters on the terms of the agreement with Sanaa, Trump claimed Yemeni officials “said please don't bomb us anymore.” Asked where he got that information, Trump said, “It doesn't matter where I heard it – a very good source.” Nevertheless, the Omani Foreign Ministry announced later that Muscat successfully brokered a ceasefire agreement between Washington and Sanaa that will see both sides end hostilities.

Trump Shuts Down 25 USGS Centers That Monitor Drought And Flooding

More than two dozen United States Geological Service (USGS) centers that monitor the country’s waters for flooding and drought, as well as manage water supply levels to make sure communities don’t run out, have had their leases terminated by the Trump administration. The 25 centers being targeted are part of a network that tracks the quality and levels of surface and ground water, reported The Guardian. The data the centers’ employees and equipment provide plays a crucial role in protecting human life and property while maintaining water supplies and helping to clean up oil and chemical spills. In the aftermath of a chemical or oil spill, USGS data tracks plumes with real-time monitoring in some locations to protect drinking water, Inside Climate News reported.

Trump’s Tariffs Turbocharge De-Dollarization

Donald Trump has made it clear that one of his top goals is to maintain the dominance of the US dollar as the global reserve currency. When he was running for president in 2024, Trump promised he would punish any country that sought alternatives to the US currency by hitting them with sky-high tariffs. “Many countries are leaving the dollar. They’re not going to leave the dollar with me!”, Trump vowed at a campaign rally. “I’ll say, ‘You leave the dollar, you’re not doing business with the United States, because we’re going to put 100% tariff on your goods'”. Since Trump has returned for his second term as US president, however, his tariffs and trade war have actually accelerated the decline of the dominance of the US dollar, not slowed it.

Trump DOJ Sues To Block States From Holding Fossil Fuel Companies Accountable For Climate Crisis

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) on Wednesday filed lawsuits against Michigan and Hawaii over their planned legal actions against fossil fuel companies for the harm their greenhouse gas emissions caused by contributing to the climate crisis. The lawsuits — which are unprecedented, according to legal experts — claim there is a conflict between the state actions and federal government authority, as well as President Donald Trump’s energy agenda. The justice department is also suing Vermont and New York over their “climate superfund laws.” “These burdensome and ideologically motivated laws and lawsuits threaten American energy independence and our country’s economic and national security,” said U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi in a press release from the DOJ.

Trumpland

The Christian fascists and oligarchs gleefully handing Donald Trump his sharpie and executive orders are not making war on the deep state, the radical left or to protect us from “antisemites.” They are making war on verifiable fact, the rule of law and the transparency and accountability that is only possible with a free press, the right to dissent, a vibrant culture and a separation of powers, including an independent judiciary. All of these pillars of an open society, as I detail in my book “Death of the Liberal Class,” were degraded long before Trump. The press, including public broadcasting, academia, the Democratic Party, a corporatized and banal culture, a judiciary that serves the billionaire class and a Congress bought by lobbyists, have been disemboweled.

Trump’s Suez Power Play Threatens To Drag Egypt Into War

President Donald Trump’s call to permit the free passage of American ships through Egypt’s Suez Canal has sparked public outrage across a nation already in steep economic decline. While Washington appears to feel entitled to Cairo’s trade route, U.S. policies have long contributed to Egypt’s financial crisis. Earlier this week, Trump announced immediate action was being taken to allow U.S. ships to transit through both the Panama and Suez canals free of charge. While the move will likely deal an economic blow to Panama City, Cairo is already teetering on the brink.

Trump To Boot National Security Advisor Mike Waltz

US media reports on 1 May revealed that US President Donald Trump is expected to remove National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and one of his top deputies, Alex Wong, from their posts, allegedly over the “Signalgate” scandal. “He could leave imminently, but the move is not final,” POLITICO cited informed sources as saying. According to US officials who spoke with multiple western media outlets, Waltz and Wong are expected to step down after “losing the trust” of other officials and lacking support within the White House. “Special envoy Steve Witkoff, a real estate developer and friend of President Donald Trump, is under consideration to replace Waltz as national security advisor,” CNN reported.

NATO Fraud Exposed: Europe Defenceless Without ‘US Cavalry’

On April 23rd, Politico published an extraordinary article, “The US cavalry isn’t coming”, documenting in forensic detail the extent to which European defence planning and infrastructure has for decades been exclusively “built on the assumption of American support,” and “speeding American reinforcements to the frontlines.” Now, “the prospect of that not happening is throwing military mobility plans into disarray,” and the continent “stands alone” – defenceless, directionless, and bereft of solutions to the disastrous results of their prostration to US hegemony over many decades.

Hurricane Helene Survivor Reacts To Trump Administration Aid Response

On April 25, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Trump administration had approved a USD 1.4 billion grant for post-Hurricane Helene rebuilding efforts. Last year, hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated some of the most impoverished regions of the US, leaving behind billions of dollars in damages and resulting in hundreds of deaths. “This is great news for western North Carolina,” said Governor Josh Stein in a statement. “I thank the Trump Administration for moving quickly to approve this plan so we can get busy rebuilding people’s homes.”

Is Trump The Last Straw For The Dollar System?

As regular viewers of Geopolitical Economy Hour will know, we have done many programmes on the dollar’s shaky basis, and on how and why we can expect its role as world money to unravel. Now, suddenly, the Western press is full of forebodings of the demise of the dollar. The Financial Times alone, normally a loyal proponent of the wonders of the dollar system, has published a series of stories, each marshalling a different reason for the dollar system’s possibly imminent demise — over a dozen in April alone. So let me start us off with the following observations: What is interesting is how much these recent stories attribute to Trump the dollar system’s possible demise – evidenced by the simultaneous sell-off of US stocks, bonds, and dollars, which is surprising given that the latter two are generally considered “safe haven” assets which are bought when there is a sell-off of riskier assets like stocks.

Trump’s Reinstatement Of Student Visas Shows Power Of Mobilizing

In the face of mounting opposition and outrage to his reactionary program, Trump has been forced to reinstate thousands of visas of international students that his administration has tried to revoke. This policy reversal puts important limitations on his administration’s attempts to repress dissent from universities (especially from the Palestine movement), and carry out mass deportations. It is a testament to the power and importance of mass resistance from below, and speaks to the fact that Trump never had a mandate for his reactionary agenda. Opposition to Trump’s authoritarian policies has been increasing ever since Trump began his second term.
