As Democrats prepare for their National Convention in Chicago next week, anti-genocide protesters and advocates are gearing up to meet them there. While Democratic leaders hope to demonstrate unusual party unity at the Convention, the yawning gap between those leaders and most Democratic voters—especially the key sectors of young voters, progressives, Muslim- and Arab-Americans—stands in the way of that unity. Democratic policy toward Palestine is not the only problematic issue in the Democrats’ policy book, but it’s a prominent one. Neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor her running mate, Governor Tim Walz, has demonstrated any commitment to changing that policy despite its manifest failure and its unpopularity among Democratic voters.

The White House has reversed the statement made by US President Joe Biden, in which he declared that he supported the proposal to run a new election in Venezuela, continuing the zigzag of the imperial line on its statements regarding the Latin American nation. Biden was questioned by a journalist this Thursday, August 15, about whether he “supported new elections in Venezuela,” to which the US president, in a newly overt display of interventionism, replied, “Yes, I do.” The White House then had to reverse their president’s statement and “clarify” what the US president supposedly meant.

CNN’s Fraudulent Analysis Of Fraud In The Venezuelan Presidential Election

In the quarter century of the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela, initiated by the election of Hugo Chávez and continued by his successor Nicolás Maduro, 31 national elections have been held. Invariably, the US-backed opposition claimed fraud in all but the two contests that they won. Equally unvaryingly has been the corporate press’s supporting and indeed embellishing of the claims of fraud as described below. The moment that Venezuela’s election authority (CNE in its Spanish initials) reported that incumbent Maduro had prevailed in the July 28 presidential contest over his nearest challenger, Edmundo González, howls of fraud were to be heard throughout the world’s corporate press.

At a rally in Detroit Michigan on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, Kamala Harris chided pro-Palestine protesters. As they chanted “Kamala, Kamala You can’t Hide! We Won’t Vote for Genocide!” the self-proclaimed “top cop” shot back, “You know what? If you want Donald Trump to win, then say that. Otherwise, I’m speaking.” This open contempt displayed by the presumptive presidential nominee for the Democratic Party came exactly two weeks after she met with Benjamin Netanyahu and reiterated the United States’ unwavering commitment to the right of the colonial entity (“Israel”) to exist, and by extension, to continue its war-intensified genocide of Palestinians.

A group of young pro-Palestine activists who heckled US presidential candidate Kamala Harris earlier this week, due to concerns she wouldn't pursue meaningful policy changes towards Israel if she won the race for the White House, have started a campaign to disrupt her election rallies across the country. In an exclusive interview with Middle East Eye, representatives of the small contingent of activists from Michigan who protested Harris during her address in Detroit, said they were convinced the Democratic Party had no intention of changing its policies towards Israel, let alone prioritising a ceasefire or an arms embargo as demanded by anti-war protesters.

Despite a monstrous internationally-coordinated, and grotesquely false media campaign of fake news that repeatedly quoted CIA-linked “pollsters” giving extreme right-wing candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, percentages of up to 80 percent of the vote and all supplemented by a propaganda campaign threatening violence, voiced principally by media-lionised, far-right politician, Maria Corina Machado, on July 28, 2024, the people of Venezuela calmly but solidly voted to continue the Bolivarian process by re-electing Nicolas Maduro for the 2025-2031 period. President Maduro’s victory as in the first CNE bulletin with 80% of the ‘voting records’ (tally sheets) in was 51.2 percent, against Gonzalez 44.2 percent, then confirmed by the CNE second Bulletin with 97 percent of the voting records, Maduro with 52 percent (6,408,844 votes) and Gonzalez with 43 percent (5,326,104 votes.).

Corporate media's coverage of Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election is akin to an investigation of a homicide that is focused not with identifying the murderer but with an unpaid parking ticket of the victim. Likewise, the media has shifted the narrative into the minutia of electoral procedures, ignoring the much larger issue of US interference in the internal affairs of another sovereign county. Nowhere in the corporate media is there even an inkling that US-imposed regime-change activities in Venezuela or elsewhere might violate some basic principles. Ours is a homeland where the likes of George Clooney and Melinda Gates have the prerogative, because they are rich, to demand that a sitting president abandon his reelection bid.

On August 9, as a part of an international call to action issued by ALBA Movimientos, the Simon Bolivar Institute, the Assembly of Caribbean Peoples, and the International Peoples’ Assembly to support Venezuela against US and mainstream media support for the attempted coup against President Nicolas Maduro, dozens of activists gathered in front of the New York Times building in New York City. The newspaper is notorious for backing undemocratic coups in Venezuela. Since the election of Maduro, the New York Times has joined the US government and right-wing governments across Latin America in openly questioning Venezuela’s verifiable election results.

What do we do with our borders? The right-wing shift in the European political climate in recent years has meant a higher degree of securitisation. At the same time, some are calling for border controls to be reduced or even abolished. Recent national and European elections have marked a shift to the right in European politics. While the far-right Rassemblement National (National Rally, RN) failed to win a majority in France’s parliamentary election, it will still be the most represented party in the French Parliament. In other European countries, such as Italy, Finland, and the Netherlands, radical right forces have formed coalition governments.

I have been in Caracas, Venezuela, for the past two weeks, before and after the presidential election on 28 July. In the run-up to the election, two things became clear to me. First, the Chavistas (supporters of Hugo Chávez and the Bolivarian project that is now led by President Nicolás Maduro) have the enormous advantage of an organised mass base. Second, knowing that the odds were not in their favour, the opposition, led by far-right María Corina Machado and the US government, were already signalling defeat before the election even took place by alleging that it would be fraudulent.

The dust-up on January 6, 2021, was nothing compared to an opposition in Venezuela calling for the nation’s military forces to ignore the declaration of state authorities recognizing the result of their electoral process. Instead. they collaborated with external powers involved in ongoing illegal actions to undermine the state and its democratically elected leadership. Even Donald Trump didn’t attempt to institute a similar course of action following the 2020 elections. And even if he wanted to, it would not have been effective since then Joint Chief of Staff, Mark Milley, inserted himself into the local security decision-making process in order to countermand any orders coming from Trump. Talk about a coup!

People’s Movements Worldwide Launch Campaign Of Solidarity With Venezuela

On August 9, the ALBA Movimientos, a platform of social and political movements from across the Americas and the Caribbean, the International Peoples’ Assembly, the Simon Bolivar Institute, and the Assembly of Caribbean Peoples, launched a campaign titled: “For Democracy and Sovereignty: Hands Off Venezuela!” The campaign comes in the aftermath of Venezuela’s presidential election and a wave of seemingly coordinated attacks from right-wing political actors, mainstream media, and US and its allies. The launch document states that, for several months, a media campaign has been created to question the legitimacy of the elections in the Caribbean country.

One of the few advantages of being a country systematically besieged with increasing intensity for more than a quarter of a century is that its leaders become increasingly adept at defense and counterattack. This is one of the conclusions that can be drawn from the events following the Venezuelan presidential elections of July 28, which are still unfolding. The actions taken by the adversaries of the Bolivarian revolution have been countered one by one, so far with a favorable balance for the re-elected president, Nicolás Maduro. The Parallel Government Strategy One of the key maneuvers was the statement by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, recognizing opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia as the winner of the elections, openly contradicting the official result given by the only competent body in the matter, the National Electoral Council (CNE), which proclaimed Maduro the winner.
