Project 2025 Continues The Historic Racist, Fascist Project

The right wing counter-revolution has been going on for more than 50 years. The Powell Memo was a 1971 directive from soon-to-be Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell, instructing the US Chamber of Commerce how to defeat the “attack on the American free enterprise system". In other words, how to defeat any leftist or even leftish policies. The Contract with America outlined Newt Gingrich’s plan for republican control of congress. These are just two examples of conservative narratives that periodically receive public attention. They are declarations of how the right wing have been working to counter the gains of the New Deal and the Black liberation movement that resulted in benefits to everyone in the U.S.

French Elections: Anti-Fascist Victory And Deep Political Crisis

Many thousands of anti-fascists celebrated all night in rallies around the country on July 7, as the news came through of the second round election results in France. It had been widely feared that the far-right National Rally (Rassemblement National, RN), led by Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, would be forming a government this week. Instead they were beaten back into third place, with 143 MPs (including their close allies). The left electoral alliance, New Popular Front (NFP), came first with 182 MPs (and they can count on the 13 "other Lefts" to vote with them). Macron’s group got 168. A parliamentary majority is 289.

Defeat The Fascist War On African People In The US And Abroad

“Defeat the War on African People in the US and Abroad” has been the rallying cry for the Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) since the formation’s inception in 2017. As we rolled out and expanded the campaign, we were frequently met with the same question in the teach-ins, webinars, panel discussions, and outreach efforts we conducted among colonized and oppressed Africans across this country and even the world: “What war on Africans?” We were similarly asked as a follow-up, “Who is waging war on us?” Those are excellent questions, but before we get to those questions, let us deal clearly with the relationship of the working class and poor Africans, and others in the U.S. to the state.

Anti-Trump Anxiety Ignores History

With President Joe Biden’s poll numbers tanking, American liberals are doubling down on what they apparently consider the best hope for his re-election: a strategy that relies heavily on whipping up fears of a dictatorship led by Donald Trump — warning that he would not only trample constitutional rights but likely imprison his political opponents. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) recently raised this specter on a podcast called “On with Kara Swisher,” openly fretting that President Trump would throw her in jail if he wins the November election. “I mean, it sounds nuts,” she said, “but I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy threw me in jail.”

Antifascism After Gaza

Over the past few years, discussions of fascism in the United States have, unsurprisingly, followed an electoral cadence, focused more on the presidency of Donald Trump — past and possibly future — than on the formidable far-right mobilization taking place through private foundations and state legislatures. In many ways, that’s justified, considering fascism has historically required, for its successful seizure of power, an electoral and constitutional process, in tandem with militias and vigilantism. But today’s so-called “fascism debate” — an academic and intellectual dispute over whether it can, or already did, happen here—is taking place against a different backdrop than four or eight years ago: that of a growing movement, led by university students, to stop a genocide funded and sustained by the U.S. government.

Watching US Fascism In Action From China

In recent days the United States has once again shown itself to be a rogue state and a fake democracy which is firmly under the control of its oligarchic class. Elected representatives are their tools and the people are indoctrinated into thinking that the duopoly partners in crime are actually different from one another, even as they work in concert. This columnist joined a delegation in China and from that distance observed a $91 billion giveaway by members of Congress, including $61 billion to the military-industrial complex for the Ukraine proxy war which has already been lost to Russia.

Movements Affirm That Imperialism Is In Decline

500 representatives from movements, unions, and parties hailing from countries across the world gathered in Caracas, Venezuela for the World Gathering for a Social Alternative. The meeting organized by the Simón Bolívar Institute for Peace and Solidarity and ALBA-TCP kicked off on April 18 and will conclude on April 20. During the first two days of debate and discussion, panelists and participants discussed the pressing tasks of the left and progressive movements to organize the masses and confront the climate crisis, the rise of the right, imperialist attacks, and fortify internationalist solidarity.

From Layoffs To Lawsuits, Billionaires Are Crushing Worker Power

The resurgence of the labor movement in 2023 galvanized and emboldened unions around the country—and sent capitalists scrambling to squash the nascent militancy of their workers. Among the attempts of the billionaire class to retaliate is a major legal challenge to the National Labor Relations Board, the government body that has protected the right of workers to collective bargaining for 89 years. This latest attack on the rights of workers is the culmination of a decades-long assault on the working class in the US, which has been caught between an economic system hemorrhaging jobs and a political system that refuses to address their problems.

Venezuela’s Battle Against Fascism: Past And Present

Fascism in Venezuela has several sources of origin. One of them was the activity of Nazi groups in Venezuela, sponsored by the German embassy in Venezuela in the first half of the 1940s. Those groups promoted Nazi ideology in Venezuela, even in public events and activities; they tried to bring the Venezuelan political elites closer to the Nazi German ideology. For security reasons in the context of World War II and through US collaboration, Venezuela expelled Nazi officials in 1941. Another component of Venezuelan-style fascism came from the regime of dictator Pérez Jiménez.

Joe Biden’s Parting Gift To America Will Be Christian Fascism

Joe Biden and the Democratic Party made a Trump presidency possible once and look set to make it possible again. If Trump returns to power, it will not be due to Russian interference, voter suppression or because the working class is filled with irredeemable bigots and racists. It will be because the Democrats are as indifferent to the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza as they are to immigrants, the poor in our impoverished inner cities, those driven into bankruptcy by medical bills, credit card debt and usurious mortgages, those discarded, especially in rural America, by waves of mass layoffs and workers, trapped in the serfdom of the gig economy, with its job instability and suppressed wages.

The ICJ’s Genocide Ruling Against Israel Is Well-Deserved

Historically the two effective canards advanced by antisemites about the Jews were that they killed Christ and they killed Christian children for their blood to use to make matzoh, the unleavened bread that is central to the Passover celebration. The notion that the Jews killed Christ, that they committed the crime of deicide, was spread by the Catholic Church and not rescinded until 1965. The charge of ritual killing of children to make matzoh fell on its face because of the ridiculousness of the assertion. But this time, because Israel has succeeded in identifying Judaism with Zionism, the International Court of Justice finding that Israel’s Zionists have plausibly committed a genocide is a truth that is now known worldwide.

Protests Erupt In Germany After Exposure Of Far-Right Conspiracy

In the wake of revelations about a far-right conspiracy in Germany to expel migrants and “non-assimilated citizens”, progressive sections in Germany have launched militant anti-far-right demonstrations across the country, raising the banner “Together Against the Right,” in defense of democracy and against fascism. From January 19 to January 22, more than 1.4 million people, including leftists, trade unionists, youth-students groups, and various other anti-fascist groups hit the streets in more than a hundred cities across Germany, protesting the xenophobic maneuvers and political schemings of far-right groups, including the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

Political Crisis In The US

It is becoming clear that the United States is in a serious political crisis. By political crisis we  mean that the ruling class is no longer able to rule and control the masses of people in the  same way it has been running the country in the past period of time. Since the end of the  Second World War the dominant section of the capitalist class has controlled the working class  through the two party system in general and through the Democratic Party in particular. In fact  the Democratic Party emerged from WWII as the most influential organization within the  working class. The foundation for this was laid in the 1930s with the role of Democratic  President Roosevelt and the New Deal.

Moms Against Fascism

In Southern California’s inland empire, far-right activists associated with The Proud Boys have spent the past year hanging banners from overpasses to broadcast queerphobic messages across the region. “Parents of Trans Kids Promote Mental Illness,” they read. Or: “The Rainbow Belongs to God, Not to LGBTQ.” The banner battle is just one front in an ongoing conflict surrounding the region’s Redlands schools. A network of LGBTQ parents and allies, including several from the group Safe Redlands Schools (SRS), have a text line to receive alerts from community members warning when a new banner drops — to make sure it’s taken down.

Year 2023 In Review For Latin American And The Caribbean

December 2 marked the 200th anniversary of the Monroe Doctrine, which proclaimed US dominion over Latin America and the Caribbean. Left-leaning governments in the hemisphere have had to contest a decadent but still dominant USA. Challenges in the past year include a world economic slowdown, a continuing drug plague, and a more aggressive hegemon reacting to a more volatile and disputed world order. The progressive regional current, the so-called Pink Tide, slackened in 2023 compared to the rising tide of 2022, which had been buoyed by big wins in Colombia and Brazil.
