The 13th Largest Army In World Is Unleashing Violence In Chicago

If the immigration enforcement apparatus of the United States were its own national military, it would be the 13th most heavily funded in the world. This puts it higher than the national militaries of Poland, Italy, Australia, Canada, Turkey and Spain — and just below Israel. That bloated force is due to a massive funding increase in President Donald Trump’s budget bill that went into effect October 1, and it comes as Chicagoland faces an escalation of violence from ICE and other federal agencies. Agents are tear gassing and beating protesters, raiding and ransacking communities across the area, and detaining people at homeless shelters and hospitals. They are roaming the city and surrounding suburbs in masks, sometimes in plain clothes and unmarked cars, and other times — especially near protests — in armored vehicles, wearing the militarized, camouflage uniforms that are the hallmark of soldiers.

Trump Declares War On The United States

Recently the name Department of Defense was retired and that federal agency in charge of the military was given its original name, Department of War. Immediately president Donald Trump implied via one of his Truth Social posts that he was declaring war on the city of Chicago. He then walked back his comment claiming that "We're not going to war. We're going to clean up our cities," which may have seemed benign for those engaging in wishful thinking until Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth called a meeting of the top military brass. The gathering began with Hegseth telling admirals and generals that they needed to shape up, literally.

Trump’s War On America

Fascists, historically, are surprisingly candid about the world they intend to create. Those they target, despite this transparency, are surprisingly obtuse about what is coming. The most ominous warning to date from our homegrown fascists is the latest Presidential memo, “Countering Domestic Terrorism and Organized Political Violence.” It accuses any critic of law enforcement, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the American empire, capitalism, the Christian right, the persecution of immigrants and those that decry discrimination based on race and gender, as well as those who question white, male patriarchy, described as “traditional American views on family, religion, and morality,” of fomenting “violent revolution.”

The War Department’s War On Media

It should be evident by now to anyone paying even casual attention that exerting full-spectrum control over American media is among the Trump regime’s most perniciously obsessive projects. Of all the extra-constitutional messes this vulgar ignoramus is making, I count his assaults on media his gravest attempt to destroy what remains of American democracy and what little chance there may be to restore it. There are all sorts of cases in point. President Trump has a citizen’s right to file lawsuits against various media — ABC News, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Paramount Global (the parent of CBS News) — but to call these anything other than an antidemocratic assertion of executive power is out of the question.

Chris Hedges Report: It’s Time To Fight Back Against Trump’s Fascist Regime

Ralph Nader, consumer advocate, corporate critic and former presidential candidate, asks these questions to demonstrate how Americans often sell themselves short regarding their power as citizens. Nader, whose life-long mission has been to empower people to fight back against corrupt politicians and greedy corporate criminals, joins host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report to continue to spread this message at a critical juncture in American politics. With Donald Trump’s increasing fascistic repression and an impending government shutdown, Nader offers a roadmap for how both government officials and ordinary people can fight back. His latest book, Citizen Self-Respect, serves as a call to action, arguing that Americans must not passively allow the Trump administration and corporate elites to consolidate their power.

Philly Meeting Shows Why Anti-Fascist Defense Can Work

Philadelphia - At a meeting Sept. 18 called by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner to oppose the use of federal troops in Philadelphia or other cities, community members stood on an historic church’s steps and kept about five fascists from entering. Krasner is running for a third term as District Attorney. Part of his re-election campaign is persistent criticism of President Donald Trump’s policies. At the first of three meetings Krasner called earlier to oppose the use of federal troops in Philadelphia or other cities, a Trump supporter named Frank Scales alongside a few others disrupted Krasner’s remarks with racist, right-wing denunciations. Coming off as a Charlie Kirk wannabe, Scales announced a protest against Krasner’s 3rd planned meeting, the one scheduled Sep. 18.

The Soviets Defeated Nazism, But Western Fascism Lived On

Victory Day! China just commemorated the 80th anniversary of its victory over Japan in the Second World War. This comes several months after Russia’s own massive celebration of the Great Patriotic War and its victory over Hitler’s Nazi war machine. I find the unfathomable sacrifices honored at these celebrations to be sacred. More than 80% of the Nazis were vanquished on the Eastern Front. This test of strength came at the great expense of 25 to 30 million Soviets. But more significantly, the Great Patriotic War was fought against Nazi ideology around notions of German supremacy. Unfortunately, the causes and costs of this war have been forgotten, while our current geopolitical order demonstrates that the lessons against supremacist ideologies were not fully internalized. The reality is that, while the Soviets won the war, the Nazis ultimately won the “peace.”

Trump Designates Anti-Fascism As Terrorism

US president Donald Trump has issued an executive order designating ‘Antifa’ as a terrorist group, despite there being no such group – and has worded his order so broadly as to make any form of protest against his fascist immigration ‘police’ treatable as terrorism. There has been little to no evidence of violence by anti-fascist protesters; on the contrary, they have frequently been the victims of unprovoked violence from both pro-Israel far-right groups and law enforcement. There is, of course, no individual group named ‘Antifa’; instead it is an umbrella abbreviation of ‘anti-fascist’ used for all opponents of the fascism that is burgeoning under Trump, a phenomenon in large part driven by the US Israel lobby’s wish to criminalise anti-genocide protest.

How Israel And Ukraine Built A Fascist, Transnational War Machine

From Bandera to Ben-Gurion, echoes of ethno-nationalist revival resonate in the modern trajectories of Ukraine and Israel, two states forged through war, hardened by siege mentalities, and fueled by historical narratives of existential struggle. But these similarities are no accident of parallel development. They reflect a deepening alignment shaped by shared adversaries like Russia and Iran, backed and brokered by the same Western patrons. In 2022, an officer of Ukraine’s Azov Regiment, toured Israel after surviving the siege of Mariupol. By 2025, Israeli drones were flying missions over Rafah, while American-made PSRL-1 rocket launchers, initially supplied to Ukraine, were spotted in conflict zones across the Middle East.

They Shall Not Pass: Our Call Against Fascism

A walk through the Museum of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance against Japanese Aggression in Beijing makes one despise war and everything about militarism. The museum is not far from the Marco Polo (or Lugou) Bridge, where the Chinese people began their war to liberate their country from the Japanese occupation in the north. The most striking parts of the museum are those that demonstrate the ugly violence of Japanese militarism, such as the Nanjing Massacre (1937–1938); the horrendous biological and chemical warfare and unspeakable human experimentation conducted by Unit 731 in the northeastern city of Harbin (1936–1945); and the prisons for ianfu (‘comfort women’) that the Japanese military established to hold sex slaves for their soldiers.

The Transformative Power Of Immigration Court Watch

Last Tuesday, I went for the second time to observe an immigration hearing in downtown Manhattan, as part of a coalition of groups whose work seems inspired by Central American accompaniment strategies. Besides providing a friendly presence to people in horrible circumstances, the point of going is to collect names and emergency contact numbers — so that if someone ends up disappeared, they won’t disappear as completely. When I entered Courtroom 7 on the 14th floor of 26 Broadway, an Ecuadorian refugee — I’ll call him Andrés — was sitting before Judge Deborah Klahr (who, like all Immigration Court judges, is actually an attorney appointed by the Justice Department). Klahr was in the process of informing Andrés that the government had recommended he be deported.

Chris Hedges Report: When Religious Mafia And Rightwing Extremists Take Over

One of the most stark examples of the expanding tide of authoritarianism worldwide was the 2017 murder of Gauri Lankesh, an Indian journalist and activist, allegedly assassinated by a far-right religious group in India for her fearless journalism. Joining host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report is Rollo Romig, a journalist whose Pulitzer Prize-finalist book, I Am On the Hit List: A Journalist’s Murder and the Ruse of Autocracy in India, examines the historic and political context of Lankesh’s murder. Romig chronicles the rise of Hindu nationalist extremism in India, linking it to India’s current authoritarian policies under Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Trump Deploys National Guard, Takes Over Washington, DC Police

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday moved to deploy the National Guard on the streets of Washington, D.C., while also officially taking over the city's police department. What's more, Trump suggested that this could be a model for other American cities. As reported by NBC News, Trump said during his announcement on plans to deploy the National Guard in the nation's capital that "other cities are hopefully watching this" and that he hoped it would make them "self-clean up, and maybe they'll self-do this and get rid of the cashless bail thing and all of the things that caused the problem." Trump then named Baltimore, Oakland, New York, and Chicago as potential future targets for National Guard deployments and other measures.

No To Fascist Austerity! No Pride In Genocide!

Over 1,500 demonstrators rallied outside Boston City Hall on July 23 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A coalition of Massachusetts disability rights organizations and labor unions, including Boston Center for Independent Living, Dignity Alliance Massachusetts and Service Employees International Union 1199, along with dozens of others sponsored the commemoration. Decades of protests, sit-ins and shutdowns by disabled activists and their allies forced Congress to pass the ADA in 1990.

The End Of Multilaterlism

The recent unilateral strikes by the United States on Iran’s nuclear development sites underline the fact that multilateralism is dead, and has been so for some time. It is not only when it comes to the question of the deployment of military power that multilateralism is shown to be dead or dying. The key institutions of Western-led globalization are no longer functioning or are in sleep mode. This was underlined by the U.S. government’s decision to boycott both the Finance and Development Summit in Seville, Spain, this week, and the Bonn Climate Summit two weeks earlier. The World Trade Organization has never recovered from the collapse of the Fifth Ministerial in Cancun in 2003, with the United States, in fact, taking the lead in emasculating it by preventing appointments to its decisive unit, the appellate court.
