Head Of Anti-Palestinian Group Is Now Top Civil Rights Enforcer

By Nora Barrows-Friedman for Electronic Intifada. Washington, DC - In a troubling move for students and Palestine rights activists, the Trump administration has tapped Kenneth Marcus as the top civil rights enforcer at the US Department of Education. He will lead the department’s Office of Civil Rights. Marcus is the head of the Brandeis Center for Human Rights, an Israel advocacy group that has for years worked to smear Palestine solidarity activism as anti-Semitism. It has no affiliation with the better known Brandeis University.

#NoMuslimBanEver: Taking It To The Streets

By the Center for Constitutional Rights. Washington, DC - This past Wednesday, October 18, over 3,000 people from all over the country convened in Washington, DC, for the national #NoMuslimBanEver mobilization. Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) staff members joined the march from the White House to the Trump International Hotel. The #NoMuslimBanEver campaign was a grassroots awareness and mobilization campaign that happened during the weeks leading up to Wednesday, October 18, the day that the third iteration of Trump's Muslim Ban was slated to take effect.

The Political Economy Of Obama/Trump

By Richard D. Wolff for Counter Punch. US capitalism is again careening down blind alleys. Earlier it had crashed into the Great Depression from 1929 to 1933 before lurching into the New Deal. After 1945 it concentrated on rolling back the New Deal until it turned sharply to neoliberalism and “globalism” in the 1970s. That provided the comforting illusion of a few decades of “prosperous normalcy.” When the second major crash in 75 years hit in 2008, it exposed the debt-dependent reality of those decades. It also sent capitalism careening through a new depression followed by a devastating austerity regime. The economic careening provokes the political: its establishment center cannot hold.

Here’s What Would Happen If US Nuked North Korea

By Greg Fish for Rantt. When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Maybe this is why so many Americans wonder why they can’t just nuke a country posing a risk to their security. With an arsenal of some 6,800 operational and precisely engineered warheads, it seems almost too appealing to end all your worries with the push of a button. But there’s a good reason why our nuclear posture isn’t determined by trigger-happy civilians eager to immolate enemy nations in radioactive hellfire. More than two decades of not having to think about nuclear annihilation seem to have created a bizarrely casual attitude about the, well, for lack of a better word, fallout from using nukes. Maybe this is why Trump has been psychotically cavalier about the notion of starting a nuclear war lately.

March For Racial Justice: Thousands Rally In DC

By John Zangas and Anne Meador for DC Media Group. Washington, DC - Tens of thousands marched for racial justice on Saturday, calling for racial equality, an end to police violence and white supremacy. Black women carried the lead banners for the March for Racial Justice, accompanied by Native Americans drumming. Many marchers displayed messages of disapproval of President Trump regarding his divisive comments about the NFL protests against police violence and his inadequate Puerto Rico relief efforts. The marchers were joined by a group of a thousand Black women who had just marched from the Capitol to join them at Lincoln Square Park.

Government By Goldman

By Gary Rivlin and Michael Hudson for The Intercept. Steve Bannon was in the room the day Donald Trump first fell for Gary Cohn. So were Reince Priebus, Jared Kushner, and Trump’s pick for secretary of Treasury, Steve Mnuchin. It was the end of November, three weeks after Trump’s improbable victory, and Cohn, then still the president of Goldman Sachs, was at Trump Tower presumably at the invitation of Kushner, with whom he was friendly. Cohn was there to offer his views about jobs and the economy. But, like the man he was there to meet, he was at heart a salesman.

Veterans Send Letter Calling For Peace Negotiations

By Veterans for Peace. Dear President Trump and Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, You have both made your point. The world has seen that neither of you will back down before the threats of the other. For the sake of the world’s people, it is now time for good faith negotiations. President Trump, you have engaged in reckless rhetoric and threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea with “fire and fury like world has never seen.” We can tell you right now that you do not speak for millions of veterans in this country.

Newsletter – No #NAFTA2, Yes To Trade For People & Planet

By Daniel Cooper Bermudez. The Trump administration is renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico in secret, just as President Obama did with the TPP. Over the past two decades, NAFTA has resulted in workers losing their jobs and being replaced by machinery, ruined family farms throughout the continent, displaced communities and privatized social services, environmental disasters like the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and a widespread attack on labor rights and unions. This week, we explain our opposition to NAFTA2 and put forward a strategy to remake trade so it is no longer corporate-driven trade for the profits of a few, but people-driven trade to benefit all and protect the planet.

Renegotiating NAFTA Is Putting Lipstick On A Pig

By Robert E. Scott for Economic Policy Institute. The first round of the Trump administration’s NAFTA renegotiations began in Washington wrapped up on Saturday. The negotiators will meet again in September in Mexico City and then again in October in Canada. The United States has not yet proposed any specific measures on important issues such as labor rights, currency manipulation, or rules of origin. By all accounts, these negotiations are more likely to hurt than help most working Americans, who would be better served by efforts to target countries with large, global trade surpluses such as China, the European Union (EU) and Japan. Rather than tinkering around the edges of NAFTA, the United States should begin a campaign to realign the U.S. dollar and rebalance global trade.

US Vastly Escalates Economic War On Venezuela

By Telesur. Venezuela - President Nicolas Maduro says the new financial sanctions imposed by the U.S. president on Venezuela are illegal, and the first to suffer will be U.S. investors. He said the prohibiton on U.S. citizens and companies buying Venezuelan bonds and securities, is an attempt to strangle Venezuela's economy. "Can the world accept this?" he asked, and called for solidarity from the world community. He recognized that the sanctions will mean sacrifice for the Venezuelan people. But he said they also open up the opportunity for a new era of independence. On this day in 2017, he said, "begins the stage of post-domination by the United States, with Venezuela again at the center of this struggle for dignity and liberation."

Immigration Crackdown Traumatizing A Generation Of Children

By Mark Keierleber for The Guardian. Gathered around a camera in their family’s kitchen, the four Duarte children pleaded for help. When their undocumented parents were picked up by border patrol agents outside their home in National City, California, the full-time students, aged 12 to 19, were unable to pay for food, let alone rent. Yarely and Aracely, 12-year-old twin sisters had watched it happen. The girls were eating breakfast last May when their father, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, went outside to grab a newspaper and was swarmed by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agents. When their mother went outside their home in National City, California, to investigate all the commotion, she, too, was arrested.

Trump’s ‘Military Option’ For Venezuela Provokes Russia Response

By Brandon Turbeville for Activist Post. The United States has finally rattled its sabers loud enough against Venezuela that it has provoked a response from Russia. After imposing yet another round of sanctions upon an already economically embattled nation following a questionable Venezuelan move to reassemble the Western-backed opposition-dominated National Assembly, the U.S. is grandstanding yet again about “democracy,” “human rights,” and all the other things America tends to ignore except when it is able to use those concepts to justify foreign wars. Speaking at a New Jersey Golf Club where Trump had concluded a meeting with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, the President reiterated the American hostility and aggression towards Venezuela and even openly stated that the United States is weighing a military option to enforce its own agenda of imperialism upon the country.

DreamHost Fights Search Warrant For Info On #DisruptJ20 Website

By Anne Meador for Dc Media Group. Washington, DC - A DC Superior Court judge will hear arguments next week related to a sweeping government search warrant served on a company which hosted an Inauguration Day protest website. DreamHost, LLC turned over records last January to the U.S. Attorney’s office when it requested information about the owners of disruptj20.org, a website of information about planned protests against Trump’s inauguration. But the Los Angeles company balked when the DOJ served a search warrant in July seeking all stored electronic communications related to the website. In its written response to the U.S. Attorney’s motion to compel, DreamHost says the warrant requires “unreasonable,” “all-encompassing disclosures” in violation of the Fourth Amendment.

Neo-Nazis And The Rise Of Illiberal Democracy

By Henry Giroux for TruthDig. While Trump finally gave way to overwhelming pressure on Monday and delivered a speech in which he asserted that “racism is evil” and described the KKK, neo-Nazis and white supremacists as “repugnant,” by Tuesday he had already reverted to his initial assertion of “blame on both sides,” equating neo-Nazis with anti-racist counter-protesters (whom he labelled as the “alt-left”) and speaking of “very fine people” among the crowd of right-wing extremists who chanted racist and anti-Semitic slogans on Friday night. The authoritarian drama unfolding across the United States has many registers and includes state violence against immigrants, right-wing populist violence against mosques and synagogues, and attacks on Muslims, Black people and others who do not fit into the vile script of white nationalism. The violence in Charlottesville is but one register of a larger mirror of domestic terrorism and home-grown fascism that is growing in the United States.

White House Warned About White Supremacist Violence 3 Months Ago

By Patrick Martin for World Socialist Web Site. The rampage through Charlottesville, Virginia last weekend by hundreds of neo-Nazis did not come as a surprise to the Trump White House. On the contrary, both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported the mounting threat of violence by white supremacist groups more than three months ago. According to a document obtained and made public by Foreign Policymagazine on its web site Monday, the FBI and DHS issued a joint warning that white supremacists had already carried out more violent attacks than any other US-based groups over the past 16 years and “likely will continue to pose a threat of lethal violence over the next year.”
