US Imperialism

US Media Suppressed Government’s Role In Ousting Brazil’s Government

In a new peer-reviewed academic article in Latin American Perspectives (11/19/23), “Anticorruption and Imperialist Blind Spots: The Role of the United States in Brazil’s Long Coup,” Sean T. Mitchell, Rafael Ioris, Kathy Swart, Bryan Pitts and I prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the US Department of Justice was a key actor in what we call Brazil’s “long coup.” This was the period from 2014, beginning with the lead up to the illegitimate 2016 impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, to the November 2019 release of then-former, now-current President Lula da Silva from political imprisonment.

What? Ukraine Is Not Winning The War?

This was the headline atop a Dec.9 commentary in The Telegraph, the farthest right of the major London dailies. The subhead elaborated the theme in yet graver terms: “Kyiv’s counteroffensive has ended in failure. This could be NATO’s Suez moment.” The piece that followed included all sorts of goodies in this line. It is not official, not yet, that Ukraine’s grand counteroffensive, the great Russophobic hope of the Zelensky and Biden regimes earlier this year, has proven a bust and that defeat is in the offing. The closest we have to such an admission came from Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this month, when the Ukrainian president declared that the counteroffensive “did not achieve the desired results.”

Anti-War Committee Launches Billboard Campaign For Divestment

Minneapolis, MN – On December 18, the Minnesota Anti-War Committee held a press conference to proudly announce the installation of four billboards in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. These billboards will serve as a visual call to action, reinforcing the committee's demands: “Divest Minnesota from Israel” and “End U.S. aid to Israel.” Strategically placed, these billboards will be a powerful tool to amplify the Anti-War Committee's demands that Minnesota divest from Israel and for the U.S. to end all support for Israel's apartheid regime. Billboards will be Minneapolis at 515 Washington Avenue S; 815 Washington Avenue SE, and at 328 S 3rd Street. The Saint Paul billboard is at 2040 Marshall Avenue.

From The River To The (Red) Sea: The US Is Forming A New Naval Task Force

Instead of pressuring Israel to stop its brutal assault on the Gaza Strip, the Biden administration is now mobilizing Arab and western fleets - and perhaps an Israeli one as well - to safeguard Tel Aviv's economic, political, and military interests. Amid heightened naval operations carried out against Israel-bound vessels by Yemen’s Ansarallah-aligned armed forces, this US mobilization is taking place under the guise of upholding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab. Officially, Washington claims it is doing its utmost to prevent Israel's war from expanding into a regional confrontation, and has publicly urged Tel Aviv to tone down its indiscriminate attacks on civilians in the besieged strip.

West Fears ‘Atrocity Upsurge’ While Ignoring Gaza

How do politicians, diplomats, the media and even the human rights community keep us politically ignorant, docile and passive – a collective mindset that prevents us from challenging their power as well as the status quo they benefit from? The answer: By constantly misrepresenting reality to us and their own role in shaping it. And they do it so successfully because, at the same time, they gaslight us by flaunting the pretence that they crave to make the world a better place — a better place where, in truth, the unspoken danger is that, were it to be realised, their own power would be severely diminished.

US-Led Red Sea Task Force To Face ‘Extraordinary Issues’

Iran’s Defense Minister Mohammed Reza Ashtiani told Iranian media in comments published on 14 December that the proposed maritime task force Washington and its Gulf allies are looking to form to protect Israeli shipping would face “extraordinary problems.” "If they make such an irrational move, they will face extraordinary problems. Nobody can make a move in a region where we have predominance," Ashtiani told the ISNA outlet. Last week, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed to reporters that Washington is looking to form a naval task force along with Saudi Arabia and the UAE aimed at protecting Israeli shipping lanes, against which Yemen’s Armed Forces and Ansarallah resistance movement have declared war.

Activists Detail Frontline Struggles Against US Militarism In Asia

With the US President Joe Biden waging an all-out economic war against China and aggressively pursuing new forms of collective security alliances to reinforce the military encirclement of China, the Asia-Pacific region has once again become a hotspot in Washington’s new Cold War. From the expansion of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (US, Japan, India, and Australia) to include South Korea, New Zealand, and Vietnam in 2021, the launch of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework in May 2022, the participation of Asian heads of state in NATO meetings in 2022 and 2023, and the cementing of the Japan-Korea-US trilateral alliance at Camp David this August, Biden’s Indo-Pacific Strategy has been dead set on forging a new anti-China Cold War bloc across the region.

On Human Rights Day; The US Is The Greatest Violator Of Human Rights

As the international community celebrates December 10th as International Human Rights Day, it is imperative that the world also affirm that violators of the fundamental human rights of peoples and nations will be held accountable. From the war in Ukraine to mass incarceration of Black, Latino and Native Peoples in the U.S. to Obama’s ongoing war in Yemen to murderous economic sanctions, coups, assassinations, war and abandonment of Afghanistan, international arms sales, commodification of COVID vaccines, illegal military occupations in Syria and Iraq, the pending invasion of Haiti and the resource wars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that have cost over six million lives.

The United States Is Losing Allies On Gaza

The United States is facing growing domestic and international opposition to its support for the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Defying the U.S. and Israel, the U.N. General Assembly voted on Tuesday, 153 nations in favor with 10 against, and 23 abstentions for an immediate end to the killing. Most significantly, the vote on Tuesday showed a slew of U.S. allies abandoning Washington on Gaza. It is the second time in the past six weeks that the Assembly voted for a permanent ceasefire.  On Oct. 27, the vote was 120 in favor, 14 against and 45 abstentions. After witnessing six more weeks of genocide, 33 more nations — including several who almost always automatically side with the U.S. — this time evidently had enough and voted against Washington and in favor of an immediate halt to the slaughter.

US Troops Are Occupying Syria’s Oil Fields; Congress Rejects Withdrawl

The US military has occupied Syrian sovereign territory since 2014, preventing Damascus from accessing its own oil and wheat fields. A top Pentagon official has acknowledged that Washington’s strategy is to starve Syria’s central government of revenue it needs to rebuild, after a decade of war fueled by foreign powers devastated the country. Former US President Donald Trump boasted in 2020: “They say, ‘He left troops in Syria’. You know what I did? I left troops to take the oil. I took the oil. The only troops I have are taking the oil. They’re protecting the oil. I took over the oil”.

Africans Should Expel All American Biolaboratories

It has been learnt that the Pentagon plans to allocate about $34 million between now and 2025 to modernize four US Army Medical Research Department laboratories, a move that could make millions of Africans hostage to deadly biological threats. Biological laboratories, which will be assigned biosafety level four, play an important role in implementing this policy by enabling research on specific agents of deadly diseases such as Ebola, which has a 90 per cent mortality rate, as well as Marburg, Lassa, anthrax, cholera, malaria, yellow fever and chikungunya. That is why 30 microbiologists from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Navy’s 3rd Medical Research Unit arrived in Kenya as early as October this year.

UN General Assembly To Vote On Emergency Gaza Resolution

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) president said on social media on 11 December that the 10th Emergency Special Session of the UN will be resumed on Tuesday, 12 December. UNGA President Dennis Francis wrote in a letter addressed to all permanent UN representatives and observer members that he received a letter from representatives of Egypt and Mauritania “requesting the resumption of the tenth emergency special session of the General Assembly as rapidly as possible.” Egypt and Mauritania’s representatives made their request for an emergency meeting on a draft resolution concerning Gaza after the US vetoed a draft resolution by the UAE on 8 December, the nation’s third use of its veto power during the current war on Gaza.

As US Vetoes Ceasefire Resolution, People Take The Streets For Palestine

From Alaska to Florida, people in the US once again took to the streets en masse to demand a permanent ceasefire in Israel’s war on Gaza and an end US aid to Israel. The Shut It Down for Palestine Coalition, composed of several organizations including the International Peoples’ Assembly, the Palestinian Youth Movement, the ANSWER Coalition, and National Students for Justice in Palestine, called for a day of action on December 8, to continue putting pressure on Israel and the US one week after Israel resumed its genocidal violence against Gaza.

Regional Resistance To War On Gaza Continues

The Israeli war in Gaza has continued to invite strong responses from resistance forces all across the West Asian region. Militias in the region have targeted both Israel and its strongest backer, the US. On Wednesday, December 6, the Ansar Allah (Houthi)-backed government in Yemen claimed that its army fired missiles targeting Israel’s southern Umm al-Rashrash (Eilat) city and said it would continue its operations until the Israeli war on Gaza is stopped. Media reports confirmed that sirens went off across Eilat city following the Houthi attacks on Wednesday. However, it claimed that using its Arrow air defense, the Israeli military was able to intercept the missile before it could enter the country’s air space.

200 Years Of The Monroe Doctrine

December 2, 2023 marked two hundred years since U.S. President James Monroe’s address to Congress, which came to be known as the Monroe Doctrine. It has become a household name for U.S. foreign policy over the past several centuries and will likely continue to be used indefinitely into the future. Although it was periodically supplemented by other doctrines and concepts. However, it was under James Monroe when it was categorically stated “America for the Americans”, and the European powers had no business there, even though they had overseas possessions.
