In Rare Protest US Supreme Court Is Disrupted

A rare disturbance broke out Wednesday during oral arguments at the Supreme Court when a lone protester at the back of the ornate room rose and loudly urged the court to overturn its 2010 ruling in Citizens United, which opened the door to unlimited corporate campaign contributions in elections. “I arise on behalf of the vast majority of the people of the United States who believe that money is not speech,” the protester said, “corporations are not people and that our democracy should not be for sale to the highest bidder.” The protester, identified by a court spokeswoman as Noah Newkirk, of Los Angeles, said the court should “overturn Citizens United” On his Facebook page Noah 'Kai' Newkirk wrote: "Just released from jail after disrupting a Supreme Court session yesterday to raise up the voice of the vast majority of Americans who believe democracy should be about everybody's votes not billionaire's dollars."

AIPAC Threatens To Sue CODEPINK Over Controversial Video Clip

On February 25th, an AIPAC member called a CODEPINK staffer threatening legal action in response to a controversial video clip that he alleges was made by the peace group CODEPINK. The video is a satirical version of an AIPAC policy conference promotional video. In response, CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin commented, “It is absurd for AIPAC to threaten legal action over such an obviously satirical video. It is interesting that they are reacting so strongly to the clip, though. Perhaps it's because the content is really an accurate reflection of AIPAC’s dangerous foreign policies. AIPAC does, in fact, advocate for bombing countries such as Iran and Syria; it fails to condemn Israel's continued building of settlements and its human rights abuses against Palestinians; and it lobbies Congress to send billions of taxpayer dollars to Israel to continue the occupation of Palestine.” She added, “What are they trying to hide by silencing this video?”

Video: A Robin Hood Tax To Take Back Our Economy

The Robin Hood tax, a small tax of less than ½ of 1% on Wall Street transactions can generate hundreds of billions of dollars each year in the US alone. It is an idea whose impact can be felt globally as well.

VIDEO: Manifest Destiny’s Child Strikes In Ukraine

As Paul Craig Roberts writes in an article published on his website and PopularResistance.org: “There is a lack of awareness on the part of the protesters that by permitting themselves to be manipulated by Washington, they are pushing the world toward a dangerous war. A number of confirmations have come in from readers that Washington is fueling the violent protests in Ukraine with our taxpayer dollars. Washington has no money for food stamps or to prevent home foreclosures, but it has plenty of money with which to subvert Ukraine.” The fact that we are meddling in the affairs of the Ukraine, spending money and influence that are resulting in violence and death should not read as tin foil hat conspiracy theory. These actions, and financial priorities have been US foreign policy dating back to at least the end of World War 2. Whether it is the 1953 CIA lead coup in Iran, or Ollie North funneling funny money to train freedom fighters in Afghanistan that would yield a young leader named Osama Bin Laden, the United States has been attempting to shape the geopolitical landscape and global economy loosing military conflicts ad wars for sixty years.

Is US Supporting Oligarch Coup Attempt In Venezuela?

The misinformation in the United States is because Venezuela is the lynch pin of the movement of Latin America away from US domination. Further, the oligarch class in Venezuela continues to control much of the media and big business interests. They are able to have a big influence on the economy, create scarcity of key goods and can impact the value of Venezuelan currency by flooding Venezuela with off-market US dollars. The oligarchs lost big in recent municipal elections and have lost national elections to Chavez and Maduro repeatedly. Not only is Venezuela a challenge to US hegemony in the Americas, it is a challenge to big finance capitalism. It has rejected the corporate-based neoliberal economics that the US is pushing throughout the world to the detriment of most people and the benefit of the wealthy. For all these reasons Venezuela is a top target of the United States and the oligarchs in Venezuela.

People Are Protesting Twitter’s Massive Tax Breaks

SEIU Local 1021, which represents 13,000 city and county of San Francisco workers, brought out hundreds of its members to march on the headquarters of Twitter. The company was targeted because of an exceptionally generous tax break it receives from the city for locating its offices in the Mid-Market area. These tax breaks added up to $55 million in 2013 alone, according to the San Francisco Chronicle and are expected to be even greater this year. Meanwhile, Local 1021 says its members - city employees - are being pressured to make concessions at the bargaining table, most notably in the amount they have to contribute toward health care costs for them and their families, because the city is running at a deficit. "As the city claims a deficit, corporations continue to get a free pass while services are being affected and unjustified health care costs are passed on to public and family budgets," says Larry Bradshaw, vice president for SEIU Local 1021 and paramedic with the fire department.

Lawmakers Push To Cut NSA’s Power And Water

NSA facilities in Maryland use a massive amount of water and electricity, the supply of which might be jeopardized by the legislation. The agency signed a contract with Howard County, Md., for water to cool a computer center under construction at Fort Meade, The Washington Post reported Jan. 2. The deal reportedly involves up to 5 million gallons of water a day for nearly $2 million a year. As of 2006 the agency headquarters purchased as much electricity from Baltimore Gas & Electric as the city of Annapolis, The Baltimore Sun reported. The proposal is the latest in a series of state bills aiming to cut off the NSA one jurisdiction at a time for allegedly ignoring the Fourth Amendment with its dragnet collection of phone and Internet records. The legislative wave is spearheaded by the Tenth Amendment Center, which along with the Bill of Rights Defense Committee launched the OffNow coalition last year seeking to cut off water to the NSA’s just-built Utah Data Center.

Activist Beaten Unconsciousness By Police Faces 7 Years

Over one weekend in March 2012, police arrested more than 70 Occupy Wall Street activists in a violent altercation in New York City’s Zuccotti Park. Among those arrested was then 23-year-old graduate student Cecily McMillan, who suffered a seizure while allegedly being beaten unconscious by police. On Monday, McMillan will go to court to face up to seven years in prison over felony charges that she assaulted a police officer with her elbow. McMillan and her lawyer say the violence began with an officer grabbing her breast from behind, making her swing her elbow back to hit the person groping her. Soon after her arrest, McMillan showed hand-shaped bruises on her chest and arms in an interview with Democracy Now.

Trayvon Martin Memorial Peace Walk

Hundreds gathered to commemorate the second anniversary of Trayvon Martin's fatal shooting by neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman. The walk for peace was led by Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, in Miami Gardens Saturday. Hundreds of demonstrators joined a 1.1 mile walk, with an important message. "Show everybody you can walk in peace, talk in peace," said Tracy Martin. "The whole thing is not just about Trayvon ... it's about all of our kids." The unarmed teenager was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida, two years ago. Fulton said nothing can break the bond of a mother and son, not even death. "I say all the time that I have two boys, and I still have two boys. I have one in heaven, and I have one here on Earth." said Fulton, as she addressed the crowd.

Massive Turnout At NC ‘Moral March’ Puts Right Wing On Notice

“Welcome to North Carolina,” reads one sign. “Turn your watch back 50 years!” You could say that the ”Moral Monday” movement and Saturday’s ”Mass Moral March” are the backlash against a backlash–against modernity. Since gaining the upper hand in the legislature in 2010 and securing the governorship in 2012, North Carolina’s GOP has gone on a rampage. In response, Moral Monday protests around the state have been growing in strength and numbers. People are fed up with the government’s hard-right turn and its seeming nostalgia for the pre-integration, pre-civil rights, and pre-feminist era. They came by busloads from Florida, New York, Alabama and Missouri and as far west as Oregon and Washington state to join ten of thousands of North Carolinians in Raleigh, the state capital.

The Co-op That Changed The South

It was a small cooperative store on a little known island off the coast of South Carolina. During the harshest days of the civil rights struggle, embattled black leaders came through its doors seeking inspiration. Among the legendary leaders who visited the co-op were: Ralph Abernathy, Dorothy Cotton, Conrad Brown, Fannie Lou Hamer, Martin Luther King Jr, John Lewis, Bernice Reagon, Cleveland Sellers, Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael), Andrew Young, Hosea Williams and many others. What began in that co-op was a Citizenship School to teach blacks on Johns Island, South Carolina how to qualify to vote. Later, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) spread that program throughout the South. That one class in the co-op became thousands of classes in churches, schools and homes. In 1962, the SCLC brought in other groups who then formed the Voter Education Project (VEP). Between 1962 and 1966 VEP trained 10,000 teachers for Citizenship Schools and 700,000 black voters registered throughout the South. By 1970, another million black voters had registered.

Free Pass Protest Gives Commuters Free Transit

After street protests, station invasions and turnstile vandalism, Rio de Janeiro’s free public transport movement finally got what it wanted for a few hours on Thursday night with a takeover of the city’s main train and bus hub. Thousands of commuters were shepherded through demolished ticket gates at the Central do Brasil station amid a violent confrontation over proposed fare rises that resulted in fires, arrests and disruption of transport networks. The station in downtown Rio echoed with police percussion grenades and the protesters’ celebratory samba drumming as they seized control of the main bank of ticket machines. Close to a thousand people joined the passe livre (free pass) march, sparked by the announcement by the city mayor, Eduardo Paes, that bus fires will rise from 2.75 reais to 3 reais (£0.75/US$1.25) on Saturday.

Video: The Day We Fight Back Against The NSA

Activists in New York City commandeered the Verizon building to promote the February 11th day of action to stop the NSA. Members of the New York City Light Brigade, The Illuminator Art Collective and other allies turned the Verizon building in downtown New York into a large billboard to project the all seeing “NSA eye” along with text stating “you will never be alone”, “our eye is on you”, and “Wherever you go, whatever you do, you are under surveillance.”

Is the TPP Dead? Have We Won?

An interview with Kevin Zeese, organizer with Flush the TPP and Popular Resistance.
It has been 20 years since NAFTA, (North American free Trade agreement) went into effect with the promise of more equality, more jobs, and a better, more prosperous and peaceful world for all of us. Given that NAFTA has contributed to a world that is a negative image of what was sold to us, it is no surprise that the global elite and the Obama administration have been negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership in secret.
