America For Sale! Everything Must Go!

The U.S. government has fallen into the hands of people who lack proper metaphors; all they know is business. The nation should be “run like a business” according to these unimaginative suits among the GOP, who haven’t read or studied enough to consider how the government might be run like anything else. The problem with this thinking is it will, by inevitably following the profit motive, lead to a terminal phase. With the House passage of President Donald Trump’s budget legislation “One Big Beautiful Bill,” the United States has reached the private equity looting stage of the metaphor. The logic of this scheme will collapse, but it might bring us all down with it.

What Many Environmentalists Get Wrong About The Money System

Amongst my environmentalist friends, one of their favourite novels of recent times is ‘Ministry for the Future’. In the book, the author Kim Stanley Robinson shocks us with how abruptly climate change might unfold. He also describes a policy response which seems unusually bold – the creation of a new currency that is linked to reducing carbon emissions. As an expert in alternative currencies, I was delighted that popular fiction turned some of my ecologically-minded friends on to the subject of money. I’d viewed environmentalism as failing to stem pollution and habitat destruction because the dominant ideology of growth, competition, and profit was seemingly out of their scope.

United States Approves $510 Million Arms Deal For Israel

The Trump administration has approved a new arms deal for Israel that will provide the country with $510 million worth of Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMS), kits that turn bombs into precision-guided weapons, as the US continues to provide military aid to support the genocidal war in Gaza. According to the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the State Department notified Congress of the sale of 3,845 JDAMS for 2,000-pound BLU-109 bombs and 3,280 JDAMS for 500-pound MK 82 bombs. The deal also includes US “government and contractor engineering, logistics, and technical support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support.”

UN Experts Urge United Kingdom Not To Misuse Terrorism Laws

UN experts* today urged the United Kingdom not to ban the “direct action” group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation under the Terrorism Act 2000. “We are concerned at the unjustified labelling of a political protest movement as ‘terrorist’,” the experts said. “According to international standards, acts of protest that damage property, but are not intended to kill or injure people, should not be treated as terrorism.” The Government asserts that the group is “terrorist” because some members have allegedly caused criminal damage to property, including at military bases and arms companies, with the aim of progressing its political cause and influencing the Government. Proscription would trigger a range of criminal offences relating to support for the group.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s Hallucinations

By the end of the annual meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in The Hague in June 2025, it became clear that everything was about money. In fact, the final communiqué was perhaps the shortest of any NATO meeting – only five points, two about money and one to thank the Netherlands for hosting the summit. The Hague Declaration was only 427 words, whereas in the previous year, the Washington Declaration was 5,400 words and ran to 44 paragraphs. This time, there was not the granular detail about this or that threat, nor the long and detailed assessments of the war in Ukraine and how NATO supports that war without limit (“Ukraine’s future is in NATO”, the alliance said in 2024, a position no longer repeated in the brief statement of 2025).

New Study: Criminalizing Homelessness Doesn’t Reduce Homelessness

A recent study shows that encampment bans and other policies that criminalize homelessness don’t keep people from living on the street. The analysis did not find any reduction in homelessness in any of the cities studied as a result of such ordinances. The study examined the effect of ordinances enacted between 2000 and 2021 across the 100 most populous U.S. cities, using data pulled from Continuums of Care — local entities that administer federal homelessness funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The study, published in May in the Policy Studies Journal, looked beyond camping bans and included laws criminalizing public drunkenness, urination or other actions that are criminalized when conducted in public but not behind closed doors.

Chris Hedges: Gaza’s Hunger Games

Israel’s weaponization of starvation is how genocides always end. I covered the insidious effects of orchestrated starvation in the Guatemalan Highlands during the genocidal campaign of Gen. Efraín Ríos Montt, the famine in southern Sudan that left a quarter of a million dead — I walked past the frail and skeletal corpses of families lining roadsides — and later during the war in Bosnia when Serbs cut off food supplies to enclaves such as Srebrencia and Goražde. Starvation was weaponized by the Ottoman Empire to decimate the Armenians. It was used to kill millions of Ukrainians in the Holodomor in 1932 and 1933.

Key Nuclear Allegation That Started War On Iran Was Coaxed From Palantir

The sudden claim of Iran being very close to a bomb (that seemingly jumped out of ‘nowhere’ to leave Americans puzzling how could it happen that – in the blink of eye, we are going to war – was subsequently refuted by IAEA Chief Grossi to CNN on 17 June (but only after the abrupt attack on Iran already had taken place): “We did not have any evidence of a systematic effort [by Iran] to move to a nuclear weapon”, Grossi confirmed on CNN. This statement drew the following riposte from Iran by its Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei on 19 June: “This is too late, Mr. Grossi – you obscured this truth in your absolutely biased report that was instrumentalized by E3/U.S. to craft a resolution with baseless allegation of [Iranian] ‘non-compliance’; the same resolution was then utilized, as a final pretext, by a genocidal warmongering regime to wage a war of aggression on Iran and to launch an unlawful attack on our peaceful nuclear facilities.

50,000 Died In Nicaragua’s Struggle Against Dictatorship; Sócrates Was One Of The Last

Nicaraguans will fill the streets later this month to celebrate the 46th anniversary of the Sandinista revolution. On July 19, 1979, the Somoza dictatorship finally fell, ending 18 years of guerilla fighting and urban insurrections. The regime had been supported for 43 years by successive US administrations (the history is told in Nicaragua: A History of US Intervention & Resistance). Only three weeks before, over the two days June 27-28, Sandinista forces had been forced to leave the capital, Managua, where the working-class barrios that they controlled in the east of the city came under aerial bombardment. Under cover of darkness, an enormous, silent retreat took place.

US Policy On Sudan Hurts Civilians Rather Than Warring Factions

As the war in Sudan enters its third year, experts, activists, and other community members say recent U.S. foreign policy is hurting, not helping, civilians. This month, the Trump administration banned Sudanese nationals, in addition to 11 other nationalities, from entering the U.S., a couple of weeks after the administration imposed sanctions on the country, claiming the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) used chemical weapons in their fight with Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Both moves, experts say, have drastically reduced resources and mobility for civilians at the center of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis more than they hinder the competing armed forces. As of this April, nearly 13 million people have been displaced, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency.

What Comes Next Following The US-Israeli War On Iran?

The fighting between Israel and Iran, sparked by an illegal and entirely unprovoked attack by Israel, has abated for the moment. After the United States did what Israeli Prime Minister hoped it would do and bombed Iran’s underground nuclear facilities, including the one at Fordow with bunker buster weapons, U.S. President Donald Trump told Israel to stop its attacks and reinforced that order when Israel sent dozens of bombers toward Iran shortly after the ceasefire was enacted, claiming a response to two Iranian missiles. The entire battle, fought on the basis of a fictional threat of Iran being close to acquiring a nuclear weapon, demonstrated how Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu can manipulate intelligence, politics, and ignorance in the U.S. to provoke American action.

Iran’s Army Chief Expresses ‘Serious Doubts’ Israel Will Adhere To Ceasefire

The Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, expressed on 29 June his “doubt” that Israel will adhere to the ceasefire with Iran, indicating Tehran’s preparedness to respond to any violation. The comments came during a phone call with Saudi Arabia’s Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman. "We have serious doubts about the continuation of the ceasefire and are prepared to respond to any aggression,” Mousavi was quoted as telling the Saudi war chief. "Israel and the United States have proven their lack of commitment to any international rules and norms,” he went on to say. "We did not initiate the war, but we responded to the aggressor with all our might and are prepared to deliver a decisive response in the event of repeated attacks."

How Structural Racism Fuels America’s Endless Wars

From the very inception of the United States, a privileged elite has engineered laws, institutions, and cultural narratives to preserve its dominance—initially through racialized land seizures and redistribution, the brutal system of chattel slavery, and exclusionary immigration policies; later through Jim Crow segregation; and today through more insidious mechanisms like militarized borders, discriminatory policing, mass incarceration, exploitative labor practices, and the weaponization of poverty. At the core lies structural white supremacy—an evolving, interlocking system of racial and class oppression that resists democracy, adapts with time, and refuses to cede power.

Bill Moyers Was A Truth-Teller, Not A Stenographer For The Powerful

My dear friend, Bill Moyers, died yesterday. He was the finest interviewer I’ve ever worked with, probing, fearless, and profoundly attuned to both the fragility and the enduring promise of democracy. With a rare combination of moral clarity and intellectual generosity, Bill devoted his life to illuminating the dangers that threatened the democratic imagination and nurturing its most humane possibilities. His work was never about spectacle or self-regard; it was about awakening the American conscience. Bill began his journey into the public eye as a young press secretary for President Lyndon B. Johnson, where he was thrust into the center of political history.

The Strategic Fallout Of The Israel-Iran War

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a truce between Israel and Iran following nearly two weeks of open warfare. Israel began the war, launching a surprise offensive on June 13, with airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, missile installations, and senior military and scientific personnel, in addition to numerous civilian targets. In response, Iran launched a wave of ballistic missiles and drones deep into Israeli territory, triggering air raid sirens across Tel Aviv, Haifa and Beersheba and numerous other locations, causing unprecedented destruction in the country. What began as a bilateral escalation quickly spiraled into something far more consequential: a direct confrontation between the United States and Iran.
