Millions Strike Against Bolsonaro’s Pension Reforms

The streets answered with a resounding “no” to Jair Bolsonaro’s pension reform proposition, to his intentions of restraining rights, and to the continuity of attacks against the people that have been happening since Michel Temer’s coup d’etat in 2016. Throughout the day, the protests, summoned as a General Strike by national union organizations, gathered millions of people in 360 cities from north to south, in all of the 26 states and the Federal District. In the capitals and major cities, the transport unions adherence to the general strike – affecting subway, urban train and bus systems...

Haiti Paralyzed By Protests Demanding The Resignation Of The President

Four months after the “blocked” country movement carried out in February protests with different sectors of the Haitian society large scale activities continue paralyzing large parts of Port-au-Prince.  Alterpresse reported on June 9 that tens of thousands of people protested against corruption and demanded the resignation of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. Most public and private institutions, commercial banks, supermarkets, and fuel stations are closed in the metropolitan area of Haiti’s capital city and the doors of the schools are closed.

Police Turn Violent In Massive Protests In Hong Kong Over Controversial Extradition Bill

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong police fired tear gas and high-pressure water hoses against protesters who had massed outside government headquarters Wednesday in opposition to a proposed extradition bill that has become a lightning rod for concerns over greater Chinese control and erosion of civil liberties in the semiautonomous territory. The afternoon violence marked a major escalation in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory’s biggest political crisis in years. It came after protesters earlier in the day forced the delay of a legislative debate over the bill...

Swamp Creatures Appear Outside Hotel Where Western Governors Meet With Bernhardt

Protesters dressed as swamp creatures kayaked down a river while others marched along a bike path, past private tennis courts and swanky swimming pools outside the hotel where governors met with Interior Secretary David Bernhardt. “My shirt says keep your oily hands off of Colorado's public lands,” says Chelsea Stencel, who was among the protesters. “David Bernhardt, the ultimate swamp monster.” Bernhardt has been compared to a swamp monster on multiple occasions for his former business ties to the industries that he’s now in charge of regulating, as the Mountain West News Bureau has reported.

French State Demands Four Months’ Jail For “Yellow Vest” Protester Eric Drouet

On Friday, on the eve of the 30th weekend of “yellow vest” protests, French prosecutors demanded a four-month prison sentence against Eric Drouet, one of the leaders of the “yellow vest” movement. He was accused of “grouping with a view to preparing violence or degradation” and “carrying a prohibited category D weapon” during a demonstration. Drouet’s conduct had been entirely peaceful, and the charges are fabricated out of whole cloth. At the end of December, police arrested Drouet, who had organised a rally at the Place de la Concorde to pay tribute to the victims of police violence among “yellow vest” protesters.

ADAPT Activists Protest Cuts To Medicaid Healthcare Services.

The Department of Health and Human Services is the federal agency most directly responsible for ensuring that Disabled Americans who need Long Term Services and Supports receive them in the most integrated setting. Although there have been increased opportunities for community living, many individuals with disabilities remain trapped in nursing facilities or other institutions and many of the initiatives that underpin the progress we have made are being eroded or eliminated, as HHS leadership espouses support for harmful changes to the programs and services that keep people with disabilities living free...

Protesters At Drone Base And Nevada National Security Site Cross The Line For Peace

We came for the annual Nevada Desert Experience Sacred Peace Walk. But this year, it is different. This year, eight of us will leave the Walk in belly chains. It is Holy Week, Good Friday, April 19, 2019. We are loaded into a white truck to begin the 50-minute ride from the Nevada Test Site — recently rebranded the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) — to Pahrump Jail. Our annual pilgrimage for nuclear abolition and in support of Western Shoshone sovereignty had begun a week earlier in front of the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas.

Virginia’s Controversial Pipelines Face Protests And Legal Hurdles

FLOYD — Warm weather has brought renewed activity to the Mountain Valley Pipeline in western Virginia, but the project and its equally contentious sibling, the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, still face unresolved legal and regulatory hurdles that leave their completion uncertain. This year has seen new protests on the ground, as well as an escalation in charges against protesters. A man who chained himself to a piece of pipeline equipment in West Virginia last month was charged with threats of terrorist acts, marking the first time a pipeline protester has been charged with a felony.

Several hundred people have shown up for the ‘march of the mutilated’ in Paris, protesting police brutality and demanding a ban on the weaponry law enforcement uses to control demonstrators. People gathered in central Paris on Sunday, the day after ‘Act 29’ of the Yellow Vest protests. US Threats To Dismantle Palestinian Refugee Agency Trigger Protests

UNITED NATIONS, May 28 2019 (IPS) - As it relentlessly pursues its strongly pro-Israeli policy – along with its disdain for multilateralism – the Trump administration continued to display its hostility towards the United Nations and its humanitarian agencies at a meeting of the UN Security Council focusing on the recent escalation of violence in Gaza. The administration’s three hardline objectives were best reflected as they converged on a single political crossroad...

Abortion Rights And The Power Of Protest

Americans do not know how to protest. Even on those occasions when they take to the streets they also waste time with nonsense. Props like pink hats or costumes from the Handmaids Taletelevision show are poor substitutes for effective politics.  It has been nearly 50 years since mass action has been coordinated into coherent political demands. Now the right to abortion is at risk and the lack of effective protest is partly the cause. The states of Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi, Iowa, Kentucky, and Arkansas have passed so-called fetal heart beat laws which ban the procedure before many women even realize they are pregnant.

Louisiana Law Turning Pipeline Protests Into Felonies Violates Constitution, New Lawsuit Alleges

A lawsuit filed today in federal court in Louisiana challenges the state’s “critical infrastructure” law, used to press felony charges against fossil fuel pipeline construction opponents, as unconstitutional. Louisiana’s critical infrastructure law is unconstitutionally vague and broad, the suit alleges, because it lets “any authorized person” exclude people from public places like sidewalks and roads if the state’s 125,000 miles of mostly unmarked pipelines cross there. The law could even be used to bring felony charges against a landowner for being on their own land, the lawsuit alleges.
