Reality Check: Bank Of England Governor Criticizes The Petrodollar!

It is remarkable that Bank of England Governor Mark Carney recently spoke publicly about “the U.S. dollar’s “destabilizing” role in the world economy,” going on to suggest that “central banks might need to join together to create their own replacement reserve currency.” This is very significant because in his capacity as Bank of England Governor, Carney serves as Chairman of the Monetary Policy Committee, giving him a major role in directing national economic and monetary policy.

Labour’s Inclusive Ownership Funds Should Be Fine

The Financial Times published an alarmist front-page story about Labour’s Inclusive Ownership Funds proposal over the weekend. The headline of the story is that “UK’s Labour would cost companies £300bn by shifting shares to staff.” The paper then goes on to quote some right-wingers saying that this will be devastating in various ways. But in reality, the proposal, if implemented, should be fine. Labour’s IOF proposal is pretty simple: every year, for the next 10 years, large British companies will be required to issue stock equal to one percent of their ownership to trusts established for each company.

Brexit Protest: Police Guard Downing St Gates As Hundreds Chant ‘No One Voted For Boris’

Boris Johnson’s plan to suspend Parliament in order to force through a no deal Brexit by October 31 has been confirmed by the Queen’s Privy Council. The move has been met with backlash, with members of the public taking to the streets in London and Manchester to protest. One video shows hundreds of protestors chanting “no one voted for Boris”, while holding up EU and UK flag. Police officers can also be seen lining the gates outside Downing Street.

US, UK Hong Kong Hypocrisy

Imagine the response if protesters were to smash up JFK or Heathrow airports, closing down international flight services. The US and British authorities would have culprits rounded up and jailed, or worse, shot dead on the spot by armed police. The scenes of vandalism and lawless insurrection this week at Hong Kong’s airport – the world’s eighth-busiest hub for passengers – were staggering. Thousands of club-wielding demonstrators trashed the terminals causing cancellation of all flights for the day.

Britain After Brexit: Welcome To The Vulture Restaurant

Britain has no leverage, Britain is desperate … it needs an agreement very soon. When you have a desperate partner, that’s when you strike the hardest bargain.” So warned former US treasury secretary Larry Summers on Radio 4 ‘Today’ programme this morning, as new foreign secretary Dominic Raab jets off on a tour of North America to investigate potential trade deals. “Britain has much less to give than Europe as a whole did, therefore less reason for the United States to make concessions,” said Summers, a senior figure in both the Clinton and Obama administrations.

UK Government Is Pushing Ahead With Extreme US Trade Deal With No Mandate

Campaign group Global Justice Now has accused Boris Johnson’s government of pushing ahead with an extreme US trade deal without a mandate from the public or parliament. This week both Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and Trade Secretary Liz Truss have been in Washington DC to talk trade with US officials. Both ministers are well known opponents of the sort of regulations and protections that would be threatened by a US trade deal. Liz Truss will speak at a meeting of the extreme free market Heritage...

Iran – Seizure Of A British Tanker – More Than Tit For Tat

July 24, 2019 "Information Clearing House" -  The British-flagged tanker “Steno Impero”, heading for Saudi Arabia, was seized on Friday, 19 July 2019, by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in the Strait of Hormuz, after it rammed an Iranian fishing boat, whose distress call it ignored. The tanker was taken to an Iranian port, because it was not complying with “international maritime laws and regulations,” Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said. Most importantly, the ship did not respond to several warnings from helicopters and Iranian boats...

The Guardian Publishes, Then Censors Jewish Open Letter Defending Smeared Pro-Corbyn Labour MP Chris Williamson

Britain’s leading newspaper The Guardian has censored an open letter published by prominent Jewish intellectuals, writers, and activists that defended leftist Labour Party Member of Parliament Chris Williamson from “anti-Semitism” smears. The Guardian printed, but then quickly removed the letter without explanation. Meanwhile, the paper has refused to retract a wholly discredited article that maligned journalist and political prisoner Julian Assange which has remained on the website for more than seven months. WikiLeaks says this piece is completely false, and has pledged to sue the newspaper over it.

UK Government Holds “Media Freedom” Conference While Imprisoning Assange

Thursday marked three months since WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange was dragged out of the Ecuadorian embassy and into London’s Belmarsh Prison, where he is being held pending extradition to the United States and a drumhead trial on Espionage Act charges that carry a prison sentence of 175 years. Assange’s only “crime” is exposing war crimes, subversion and corruption by the US and British governments. Chelsea Manning, the courageous whistleblower who leaked the information to WikiLeaks, has been sent back to jail for refusing to give false testimony against Assange before a US grand jury.

In Terms Of Combating Climate Crisis, Renowned Naturalist David Attenborough Declares: ‘We Cannot Be Radical Enough’

In testimony to British lawmakers Tuesday, famed scientist and environmental advocate Sir David Attenborough said that humanity "cannot be radical enough" in working to stop the ravages of the climate crisis from destroying the planet. Attenborough made the comment during his remarks to Parliament's business, energy and industrial strategy committee. When Attenborough was asked his opinion on a goal of reducing British greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, he told Tory MP Patrick McLoughlin that the nation should not limit itself to that goal but rather to the furthest-reaching standard possible.

Activists Shut Down UK-Based Israeli Arms Factories ‘In Solidarity With Palestinian People’

Elbit is directly involved in the murder of Palestinians by the occupying Israeli forces. They work closely with the Israeli military to develop increasingly lethal weapons, which are then tested on Palestinians and sold as ‘battle-tested’ to governments around the world, including the British government. It is deplorable that they have four factories in the UK where they… manufacture their deadly weapons with impunity.

Extinction Rebellion’s Massive Summer Uprising

Climate activists Extinction Rebellion (XR) is urging supporters to sign up to action in five UK cities over the summer which will be “as large, if not larger” than its April protests in the capital. Action will take place in Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds and London from 15 July. Each site will see different action, for a different amount of time, but all will demand that the government acts immediately to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025, XR said. In June, the government signed a target to bring the UK economy to net zero by 2050 into law, following analysis by its advisors, the Committee on Climate Change, that the previous target of an 80% reduction could be beaten.

Theresa May Was A Bad PM, But Her Resignation Will Do Nothing To Arrest Britain’s Long-Term Decline

There is a story about an enthusiastic American who took a phlegmatic English friend to see the Niagara Falls. “Isn’t that amazing?” exclaimed the American. “Look at that vast mass of water dashing over that enormous cliff!” “But what,” asked the Englishman, “is to stop it?” My father, Claud Cockburn, used to tell this fable to illustrate what, as a reporter in New York on the first day of the Wall Street Crash on 24 October 1929, it was like to watch a great and unstoppable disaster taking place.

How Ireland’s Citizens’ Assembly Helped Climate Action

In July 2016, the new government – led by Fine Gael, backed by independents – put forward a bill to establish a national-level Citizens’ Assembly to look at the biggest issues of the day. These included the challenges of an ageing population; the role fixed-term parliaments; referendums; the 8th Amendment on abortion; and climate change. Citizens from every region, every socio-economic background, each ethnicity and age group and from right across the spectrum of political opinion convened over the course of two weekends between September and November 2017.

For The Love Of Winning: An Open Letter To Extinction Rebellion

You just made history, there is no doubt about it. On May 1, the UK Parliament declared a climate emergency. You just nudged the world into the right direction with your disobedient bodies and beating hearts. Extinction Rebellion’s first demand has become a reality. You put your dreams and courage on display, splashed images across the world that showed that in an emergency, words are never enough. You proved, what fierce lover and rebel poet of everyday life Oscar Wilde, believed when he wrote: “Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is our original virtue.
