US Imperialism

Trusting The ‘Five Eyes’ Only

Wherever he travels globally, President Biden has sought to project the United States as the rejuvenated leader of a broad coalition of democratic nations seeking to defend the “rules-based international order” against encroachments by hostile autocratic powers, especially China, Russia, and North Korea. “We established NATO, the greatest military alliance in the history of the world,” he told veterans of D-Day while at Normandy, France on June 6th. “Today… NATO is more united than ever and even more prepared to keep the peace, deter aggression, defend freedom all around the world.”

The Kenyan Intervention In Haiti: A Wave Of ‘Diplomatic’ Terrorism

The invasion of Haiti that has just begun with the arrival of Kenyan police, was long in the making. It is the end result of a long imperialist war of destabilization and propaganda against the country. Kenya's involvement is said to be a better solution than previous interventions, but it is just a cover for the goals of western imperialist machinations.

Colombian Social Movements Reject US-Colombia Military Exercises In Pacific

The Colombian political and social movement the People’s Congress (Congreso de los Pueblos), which brings together dozens of social organizations across sectors and regions of the country, categorically rejected the joint US-Colombia military drills as part of the US Southern Command’s “Southern Seas 2024” operation. Joint exercises between the US Marines and the Colombian Navy took place from June 29-30, 2024, off the coast of the Cauca Valley in Colombia. There were five coordinated exercises and practices between the two armed forces in the Pacific Ocean. Notably, the US aircraft carrier USS George Washington (one of the largest in the world) was present, which can carry 75 military aircraft and 5,000 people on board, and fire nuclear weapons.

Trump/Biden Debate Immigration: US Foreign Policy As A Driver Is Ignored

The contestants squared off in the first of the US presidential debates of 2024. Both wore identical white shirts and navy suits with American flag lapel pins. One wore a red tie; the other a blue one. There were other differences, but none quite so substantive. The immigration issue dominated the debate. The challenger claimed that the country was being menaced by immigrants – marauding hordes of rapists, murders, and mentally ill. They were the ruination of the nation. Social Security and Medicare were jeopardized by the alien element. Immigrants endangered the jobs of blacks and Hispanics.

Anti-War Organizers On The Pacific Coast Protest US Military Exercises

Anti-war activists with the international Cancel RIMPAC Campaign and the Resist NATO Coalition are organizing to protest the RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific Exercise), the largest international maritime warfare exercise, taking place in Hawai’i, which is hosted by the United States Navy‘s Indo-Pacific Command, set to begin on June 27. Organizers are also opposing the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington, DC, which will take place from July 9 to 11. These two groups held a joint press conference to quick off future actions on June 26. Cancel RIMPAC is holding a week of action culminating in a People’s Summit and mobilizations in San Diego on June 29 and 30.

Gaza Blowback: A Crisis Of Conscience In The Military Can Impact Foreign Policy

The unprecedented live-streamed violence in Gaza has forced a crisis of conscience for many government employees. From the State Department to the military, individuals have taken rebellious action to remove themselves from participating in a blazingly obvious campaign of controlled famine and collective punishment. Tonight on State of Play, we interview two conscientious objectors from the United States Air Force and reflect on military retention rates, the recruiting crisis, and the lessening of military capacity due to increasingly unpopular foreign policy actions. Will the younger generation’s lack of jingoistic zeal be a potential brake for US belligerence?

There Is No Such Thing As A Small Nuclear War

There was a time when calls for a nuclear-free Europe rang across the continent. It began with the Stockholm Appeal (1950), which opened with the powerful words ‘We demand the outlawing of atomic weapons as instruments of intimidation and mass murder of peoples’ and then deepened with the Appeal for European Nuclear Disarmament (1980), which issued the chilling warning ‘We are entering the most dangerous decade in human history’. Roughly 274 million people signed the Stockholm Appeal, including – as is often reported – the entire adult population of the Soviet Union. Yet, since the European appeal of 1980, it feels as if each decade has been more and more dangerous than the previous one.

New Evidence US Blocked Ukraine-Russia Peace Deal

Since the collapse of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in April-May 2022, the Biden administration and establishment US media have maintained a near-total vow of silence. Even as Russian President Vladmir Putin has directly accused the US and UK of sabotaging the negotiations in Istanbul, President Biden and his top principals have never offered a rebuttal, and no major US outlet has bothered to seek one. The lone exception was an anonymous senior administration official, who told the Wall Street Journal’s Yaroslav Trofimov that Russian complaints were “Utter bulls—.” The official added: “I know for a fact the United States didn’t pull the plug on that. We were watching it carefully.”

How Venezuela Is Overcoming The United States Blockade

The future of Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution, a target of US imperial power since its inception in 1998, may be decided on July 28, the date of their presidential election. Incumbent President Nicolás Maduro and seven other presidential candidates pledged to abide by the choice of the electorate. Edmundo González, promoted by the US, and another candidate have not signed the pledge, consistent with the far right only accepting contest results where they win. Likewise, a bipartisan and bicameral resolution was introduced on June 18 to the US Congress not to recognize a “fraudulent” Maduro victory.

Washington Plans To Turn Taiwan Strait Into ‘Hellscape’

The Washington Post in an opinion piece by Josh Rogin titled, “The U.S. military plans a ‘Hellscape’ to deter China from attacking Taiwan,”  lays out a fundamentally flawed assessment of a US Department of Defense strategy relying on unmanned systems to fight off the Chinese military for up to a “month” before the US and its allies can mobilize their armed forces. And even as the Washington Post attempts to sell this strategy as plausible, it itself calls into question the window of opportunity in which it could be implemented and actually succeed. A Flawed Strategy Laid Upon an Equally Flawed Premise Before even examining the flaws of the strategy itself, it must first be pointed out that the entire premise upon which this strategy would be utilized, “defending Taiwan,” is entirely flawed.

Maduro Vs. US Election Interference: A Battle For Venezuela’s Future

With upcoming elections scheduled for July 28, the United States is working overtime to dislodge the socialist government of Nicolás Maduro. Ten individuals are vying for the position, including nine in opposition to Maduro, who heads a coalition of 13 leftist groups. Washington, though, has made clear that its preferred candidate is 74-year-old retired diplomat Edmundo González, and is spending big, bankrolling a myriad of opposition organizations, from political parties to NGOs and media outlets, all with the same goal in mind: ousting Maduro and returning Venezuela into the U.S. sphere of influence.

Russia States The Conditions Under Which It Will Invade NATO

On June 20th, the Russian Government’s RT News issued an English-language translation, titled “Russia fears a NATO attack. Here’s why.”, of a June 19th Russian-language article by Professor Igor Istomin, who is the acting head of the Department of Applied Analysis of International Problems, at MGIMO University, which is a part of Russia’s Foreign Ministry. This article would not be so published if it did not express accurately the views and policies of Russia’s Government. It stated that there are three things which would spark a Russian response to eliminate “the notorious ‘decision centers’” within NATO.

US Responsible For Sevastopol Strike With Weapons Supplied To Ukraine

Washington is responsible for the missile strike on Sevastopol’s civilians, as all targeting data for the ATACMS missiles used are entered by US specialists, the Russian Ministry of Defense said. Flight missions for ATACMS missiles are programmed by US specialists based on US satellite reconnaissance, making Washington primarily responsible for the deliberate missile strike on Sevastopol’s civilians, the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) stated. “Therefore, the responsibility for the deliberate missile strike on Sevastopol’s civilians lies primarily with Washington, which supplied this weapon to Ukraine, as well as the Kiev regime, from whose territory the strike was launched,” the statement said.

Top US Official On Israel-Palestine Affairs Tends ‘Surprise’ Resignation

The deputy assistant secretary for Israeli-Palestinian affairs at the US State Department, Andrew Miller, resigned from his position this week in what US media describes as a significant “setback” to the White House's efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. Miller's colleagues told the Washington Post that he announced his departure on 21 June in a surprise move, citing his family and saying “he has seen them sparingly as the eight-month war in Gaza has become all-consuming.” Nevertheless, officials familiar with Miller described him as skeptical of President Joe Biden's "bear hug” strategy toward Israel.

Defeat The Fascist War On African People In The US And Abroad

“Defeat the War on African People in the US and Abroad” has been the rallying cry for the Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) since the formation’s inception in 2017. As we rolled out and expanded the campaign, we were frequently met with the same question in the teach-ins, webinars, panel discussions, and outreach efforts we conducted among colonized and oppressed Africans across this country and even the world: “What war on Africans?” We were similarly asked as a follow-up, “Who is waging war on us?” Those are excellent questions, but before we get to those questions, let us deal clearly with the relationship of the working class and poor Africans, and others in the U.S. to the state.
