US Imperialism

How USAID And The Global Fragility Act Sustain US Imperialism In Libya

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is presented as an agency to assist or "aid" in the positive development of Libya—and other African states—but in reality supports the same imperialist agenda that drove the 2011 military assault that destroyed Libya’s social and political fabric. The regime change operation in Libya, especially following the 2011 NATO overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, left the country in a state of perpetual chaos and factionalism. This instability serves as fertile ground for the expansion of U.S. influence through soft power mechanisms like the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which, despite its humanitarian facade, works in concert with broader U.S. imperial objectives, as outlined in the Global Fragility Act (GFA), through which Libya is a “priority partner” country.

US Embassy Blocks Iraq-Lebanon Humanitarian Air Bridge

The US embassy in Lebanon has blocked the establishment of a humanitarian air bridge between Baghdad and Beirut, insisting instead that any humanitarian aid for those displaced by the Israeli war be delivered via Jordan “for inspection first,” according to a report by Lebanese daily Al Akhbar. Washington reportedly also threatened Lebanon's national airliner, Middle East Airlines (MEA), with sanctions if its planes were used to transport those wounded by Israel's terror attack that caused communication devices to explode across the country.

The Wondersome Effects Of Weapon Sales And Sanctions

In a world where everything is interconnected - economics, industrial production and global political competition - it becomes exceedingly difficult to use foreign policy instruments like weapon sales to proxies or sanctions. There will nearly always be some unforeseen backlash coming in an unexpected area that will hurt. The European sanction policies against Russia may be the prime example for this. But hostile U.S. policies towards China may, over time, cause much more damage. Not to China but the U.S. and its desired policy aims themselves.

Venezuela Calls For World Antifascist Parliamentary Forum

Undoubtedly the major conflicts underway in the world today, more often than not, can be viewed as expressions of ideologies—long thought to have been left behind in history—like fascism, nazism and zionism where imperialism and colonialism remain the underlying rationalisation for warmongers. If the warmonger were to be equated to a painter one could imagine different shades of fascism, nazism and zionism as splashes of colours on a canvas of imperialism-colonialism. The problem is that warmongers do not produce art, at odds with the title of the 2500-years-old book The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

US Ambassador To Lebanon Promotes ‘Internal Uprising’ To Assist Israel

A high-ranking Lebanese security source revealed to Al-Akhbar newspaper that the US Ambassador to Lebanon, Lisa Johnson, is continuing her agenda to prepare Lebanon for a “post-Hezbollah era” by mobilizing “internal” forces against the Islamic resistance movement while it fights the Israeli Army. In discussions with Lebanese politicians, Johnson reportedly said, “Israel cannot achieve everything through war; it’s time for you to do your part and launch an internal uprising under the banner of ‘Enough.’” The ambassador added, “The Lebanese people must show their desire to rise up and get rid of Hezbollah and return to the context that emerged after the assassination of Rafik Hariri, especially since the regional, international, and field circumstances are in your favor.”

SADC Calls For ‘Unconditional Lifting’ Of ‘Illegal’ US Sanctions On Zimbabwe

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has condemned the US-imposed unilateral sanctions on Zimbabwe as “illegal” and a violation of the “basic human rights of ordinary Zimbabweans”. It has also once again called for their “immediate and unconditional removal.” The regional intergovernmental organization with 16 member states has been observing every October 25 as the SADC Anti-Sanctions Day, after the date was thus designated by the heads of the SADC states at its 39th Summit in August 2019. “These sanctions have not only affected the people of Zimbabwe and their Government, but the entire region.

Media Hawks Make Case For War Against Iran

The media hawks are flying high, pushing out bellicose rhetoric on the op-ed pages that seems calculated to whip the public into a war-ready frenzy. Just as they have done with Hezbollah (FAIR.org, 10/10/24), prominent conservative media opinionators misrepresent Iran as the aggressor against an Israel that practices admirable restraint. Under the headline, “Iran Opens the Door to Retaliation,” the Wall Street Journal editorial board (10/1/24) wrote that Iran’s October 1 operation against Israel “warrants a response targeting Iran’s military and nuclear assets. This is Iran’s second missile barrage since April, and no country can let this become a new normal.”

War And The Constitution

Can the president fight any war he wishes? Can Congress fund any war it chooses? Are there constitutional and legal requirements that must first be met before war is waged? These questions should be addressed in a national debate over the U.S. military involvement in Ukraine and Israel. Sadly, there has been no debate. The media are mouthing what the C.I.A. is telling them, Congress is in lock-step, and only a few websites and podcasts — my own, “Judging Freedom” on YouTube, among them — are challenging the government’s reckless, immoral, illegal and unconstitutional wars.

Why Brazil Opposes Venezuela’s Entry Into BRICS

On Monday, it was reported that Brazil would oppose Venezuela’s entry into the BRICS group. The 16th Summit of the BRICS organization is taking place this week in the Russian city of Kazan. President Nicolás Maduro was invited by the Russian president himself, Vladimir Putin, at the beginning of August, and is attending with a Venezuelan delegation. The Brazilian government’s advisor for international affairs, former foreign minister Celso Amorim, announced that Brazil would seek to prevent Venezuela from joining BRICS. The instruction to veto Caracas’s possible accession came from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Widening The War: The US Sends Troops To Israel

The dangers should be plastered on every wall in every office occupied by a military and political advisor. Israel’s attempt to reshape the Middle East, far from giving it enduring security, will merely serve to make it more vulnerable and unstable than ever. In that mix and mess will be its greatest sponsor and guardian, the United States, a giant of almost blind antiquity in all matters concerning the Jewish state. In a measure that should have garnered bold headlines, the Biden administration has announced the deployment of some 100 US soldiers to Israel who will be responsible for operating the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.

War With Iran More Concerning Than A National Security Leak

President Joe Biden’s administration has deployed at least 100 United States troops to Israel, along with an anti-ballistic missile defense system, to help the Israeli government as it pursues an attack on Iran. When the Israeli military strikes targets in Iran, the U.S. will become a party to the armed conflict between Israel and Iran. "To introduce troops into hostilities, per the 1973 War Powers Act, you either need an authorization from Congress, or there needs to be some urgent and imminent self-defense threat," said former U.S. Army major Harrison Mann, who resigned in protest over Israel's war on Gaza.

United States And China Why Not A Deal?

An old theme within social theory holds that societies with very unequal distributions of wealth can sustain their social cohesion so long as total wealth is growing. Such total growth enables all who get a distributed share of that wealth—even those with the smallest shares—to experience at least some increase. The rich with the biggest shares can grab most of the growth so long as some is provided to those with small shares. The pie analogy works well: so long as the pie is growing all distributed shares of it can also grow.

US Reinforces Control Over Peru

On June 7, 2021, a political earthquake occurred in Peru. A political outsider, the rural teacher Pedro Castillo, was elected president of the country with the promise of transforming a political and economic system built on great inequalities among the Peruvian population. The first measure taken by this government was the initiative of Foreign Minister Héctor Béjar to leave the Lima Group, which weakened the regime change operation against Venezuela, initiated by the United States. The foreign minister’s sovereign decision would cost him his job. Just 15 days after taking office, he was dismissed by Congress.

Resetting BRICS For The South Slavs, New Europe And The World

On October 22, in the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, located less than five hours along the M-12 “Vostok” highway from Moscow, the 16th Kazan BRICS summit opens – an association of 10 countries of a new geopolitical format, ahead of all the slow-moving Western alliances that has fallen into recession or stagnation. Already, Kazan is fully ready to host the leaders of more than 33 countries participating in the BRICS summit in a year when Russia is the chairman of the association of leaders of the multipolar world. The Moscow Kremlin noted that Kazan is fully prepared to host more than 20,000 guests and the summit organizers took into account the interests of more than 30 countries planning to receive an invitation to BRICS or become partner states of this association in the near future.

Censorship, War Propaganda And Fascism

The F-word of the moment is fascism. Establishment pundits, Democratic Party politicians, and corporate media are of one accord and agree that a Donald Trump presidency will bring fascism to the United States. All of them ignore the authoritarian nature of the state that already exists and the actions taken to date which can accurately be described as fascistic. On October 13, the same day that the Israel Defense Force (IDF) bombed refugees at the Al-Aqsa Hospital and burned patients alive, the U.S. announced it was sending troops to Israel to man the THAAD missile system which will be used in the imminent attack on Iran. Congress has not approved such a deployment. Most citizens of the U.S. are unaware that their government has chosen to fulfill Israel’s long held fantasy of attacking Iran with U.S. help or that the repercussions could lead to a wider regional war with other nations.
