A (Re)Born National “Black And Left-Led” Organization Fights For Community Control Of Police

Eight-hundred organizers from 28 states gathered last weekend at the Chicago’s teachers union hall to “re-found” the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, an organization initially launched in 1973  by Angela Davis and fellow Communists to resist state destruction of what remained of the 1960s radical movement. Davis, a university professor who became a fugitive and political prisoner when the FBI attempted to entangle her in the 1970 Marin County shootout , was on hand to help restore the Alliance to national status.

Operation Condor 2.0: After Bolivia Coup, Trump Dubs Nicaragua ‘National Security Threat’ And Targets Mexico

One successful coup against a democratically elected socialist president is not enough, it seems. Immediately after overseeing a far-right military coup in Bolivia on November 10, the Trump administration set its sights once again Nicaragua, whose democratically elected Sandinista government defeated a violent right-wing coup attempt in 2018. Washington dubbed Nicaragua a threat to US national security, and announced that it will be expanding its suffocating sanctions on the tiny Central American nation.

‘Ten Year Challenge’ For 400 Wealthiest Americans Shows Fortunes Doubled Since 2009 While Tax Rates Dropped

"Here's the thing: the way the system is set up, we're headed for another decade of this." Exemplifying a national economy rigged in favor of the already rich, the wealthiest 400 people in the U.S. enjoyed a drop in their tax rate from 2009 to 2019 even as they enjoyed a drop in their tax rate. University of Calfornia Berkeley economist Gabriel Zucman—citing the social media meme known as the “ten year challenge“—crunched the numbers Sunday in a tweet, finding that the total wealth of the 400 richest Americans jumped from $1.27 trillion to $2.96 trillion. The tax rate fell from 27% to 23% in that time.

Earth Nears Irreversible Tipping Points

LONDON, 28 November, 2019 – On the eve of a global climate summit in Madrid, seven distinguished climate scientists have issued an urgent warning of approaching planetary tipping points: within a few years, they say, humankind could enter a state of potentially catastrophic climate change on a new “hothouse” Earth. They warn that dramatic changes to planetary stability may already be happening in nine vulnerable ecosystems. As these changes happen, they could reinforce each other and at the same time amplify planetary temperature rise...

Museum Workers Across The Country Are Unionizing. Here’s What’s Driving A Movement That’s Been Years In The Making

“Let us in! Let us in!” chanted a small crowd of visitor services associates dressed in black. They stood at the locked gate of the Marciano Art Foundation (MAF) on Friday, November 8, at 11 a.m., the time the museum normally would have opened to the public. Three days earlier, the austere contemporary art foundation had closed abruptly—less than a week after the visitor services associates announced their plan to unionize. The foundation, a private nonprofit opened in early 2017 by the two art-collecting brothers behind the denim brand Guess...

Neoliberalism And Evangelicalism Is Teaming Up To Remilitarize Latin America

Latin America appears to be in a state of chaos with a struggle emerging between the so-called independent socialist Pink Tide countries and the neoliberal conservative Blue Tide countries. Revolts against neoliberal policies have been seen in Chile and Ecuador and a coup has recently taken place in Bolivia. Latin America is certainly remilitarizing. However, there is also a Great Power element to this, with the U.S. desperately holding onto its unilateral hegemony over what it considers its Latin American “backyard” in the face of growing Chinese and Russian economic and military interests in the Western Hemisphere.

The Urgent Need For Worker-Owned Media

Another quality media outlet has been killed, another talented group of writers and editors pushed out of their jobs. Today’s casualty: Deadspin, the acclaimed not-just-sports website, where staff resigned en masse to protest the elimination of their editorial independence. Earlier this year, private equity firm Great Hill Partners acquired Gizmodo Media—which included not only Deadspin, but the Onion, Jezebel, and Lifehacker. Great Hill rebranded the company G/O Media because of course they did, and began to do what rich owners do to successful and high-quality media properties: destroy them.

A Grassroots Movement Is Growing To Take On Amazon

Athena is a new alliance of people who believe that control over our lives, our communities, and our democracy should be in our hands. Everyone should be able to enjoy the benefits of digital technologies and online commerce without having to sacrifice our rights and liberties, health and planet, or hopes and dreams. But billionaire corporations like Amazon rig the rules so only they can prosper. They threaten our ability to earn a good living and live a good life. We are joining together to stop Amazon’s growing, powerful grip over our society and economy.

U.S. Is Using Hong Kong For A Shakedown

The United States government just officially crowned itself as a shakedown artist. The passage and signing of Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act and Placing Restrictions on Teargas Exports and Crowd-control Technology to Hong Kong Act have gone beyond mere interference in domestic affairs. Maybe U.S. politicians don't realize it, or maybe they just don't care anymore, but this bill has removed all façade that the United States have put up. It isn't designed to protect Hong Kong residents' "freedom" and "human rights" as Congress claims it to be.

On This Day Of Thanks And Mourning, A Call To Demilitarize The US Border

One year ago this week, as families across the country were preparing to sit down together for a Thanksgiving (or Day of Mourning) meal, families at the U.S.-Mexico border were facing a potentially deadly threat; just one day prior, Donald Trump had authorized U.S. troops to use lethal force against migrants and asylum seekers. Since then, the militarization of the southern border has only intensified. Approximately 7,000 military service members are now stationed there, operating under continued unclear rules of engagement and nebulous legal authority to surveil, detain, and even kill.

Google Secretly Harvests The Health Data Of Millions

Google has been harvesting the health data of tens of millions of U.S. patients since 2018, unbeknownst to those patients or their doctors, as revealed by a Nov. 11 investigation by the Wall Street Journal. According to the story, Ascension, a private network of some 2,600 hospitals and other health care facilities, had been systematically feeding the medical information to Google’s cloud infrastructure in what amounts to the largest data transfer in the health care field. Google, in turn, plans to “suggest” changes to patients’ care, possibly via machine learning.

Why Anti-Abortion Lawmakers Have Become So Open About Attacking ‘Roe’

Since Trump entered the presidential race in 2015, anti-abortion advocates and lawmakers "have been emboldened with horrific rhetoric that supports a climate of violence against abortion providers," said Erin Matson, co-founder and co-director of Reproaction. "They’re just going for the jugular." In late October, Pennsylvania state Rep. Stephanie Borowicz (R-Clinton County) and state Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-Franklin County) introduced a bill banning abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. During the press conference, Borowicz said the bill could be the “dagger in Roe v. Wade.”

50th National Day Of Mourning

An annual tradition since 1970, Day of Mourning is a solemn, spiritual and highly political day. Many of us fast from sundown the day before through the afternoon of that day (and have a social after Day of Mourning so that participants in DOM can break their fasts). We are mourning our ancestors and the genocide of our peoples and the theft of our lands. It is a day when we mourn, but we also feel our strength in political action. Over the years, participants in Day of Mourning have buried Plymouth Rock a number of times, boarded the Mayflower replica, and placed ku klux klan sheets on the statue of William Bradford, etc. Although we very much welcome our non-Native supporters to stand with us, it is a day when only Indigenous people speak about our history and the struggles that are taking place throughout the Americas.

Our Children Await A Radioactive Legacy

LONDON, 26 November, 2019 − After 70 years of building and operating nuclear power plants across the world, governments are bequeathing to future generations a radioactive legacy. They remain unable to deal with the huge quantities of highly radioactive spent fuel they produce, says a group of independent experts − and as more reactors are reaching the end of their lives, the situation is worsening fast. That is the conclusion of the first World Nuclear Waste Report (WNWR), produced by a group which says there are ever-growing challenges in waste management and no sustainable long-term solutions.

A BDS Campaign Tackles The Sports Industry In Portland — And Wins

Boycotting for Palestinian rights works. A reporter broke the news in late September that the Portland Trail Blazers basketball team ended their partnership with Leupold & Stevens, which makes rifle scopes for Israel’s brutal occupying army, following a year-long protest campaign led by our Portland, Oregon, chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and many allies. For nearly 10 years, Leupold & Stevens sponsored a “Hometown Hero” segment during Blazers games...
