Israel’s Assault On North Gaza’s Last Functioning Hospital

Tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians across northern Gaza have been forced on a death march by the Israeli army since Monday, October 21. Northern Gaza is being emptied of its inhabitants, and one of Israel’s strategies in achieving this goal is to take out the area’s few remaining social institutions: hospitals. As part of its ongoing offensive on northern Gaza, the Israeli army has been trying to clear out the entire area north of Gaza City for the past 18 days. At least 200,000 people continue to stay there, many of them fearing, according to local testimonies, that they will be targeted on the way south or in Israeli-designated “safe zones,” which have been consistently bombarded over recent months.

Why Brazil Opposes Venezuela’s Entry Into BRICS

On Monday, it was reported that Brazil would oppose Venezuela’s entry into the BRICS group. The 16th Summit of the BRICS organization is taking place this week in the Russian city of Kazan. President Nicolás Maduro was invited by the Russian president himself, Vladimir Putin, at the beginning of August, and is attending with a Venezuelan delegation. The Brazilian government’s advisor for international affairs, former foreign minister Celso Amorim, announced that Brazil would seek to prevent Venezuela from joining BRICS. The instruction to veto Caracas’s possible accession came from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Mearsheimer’s bizarre remarks on the absence of systemic racism in the U.S. would suggest that he is a signatory to what the late Jamaican philosopher Charles Mills dubbed the “Racial Contract” in which whites agree to deliberately misinterpret the world in an effort to qualify the genocide, colonization, and slavery of nonwhite peoples. In his eponymous book, Mills wrote that the Racial Contract “…establishes a racial polity, a racial state and a racial (judicial) system, where the status of whites and nonwhites is clearly demarcated, whether by law or custom. And the purpose of this state …is to maintain and reproduce this racial order, securing the privileges and advantages of the full white citizens and maintaining the subordination of whites.”

Sometimes it’s a no for an MRI for a high school wrestler with a strained back. Sometimes for a cancer procedure that will help a grandmother with a throat tumor. Sometimes for a heart scan for a truck driver feeling short of breath. But the insurance companies don’t always make these decisions. Instead, they often outsource medical reviews to a largely hidden industry that makes money by turning down doctors’ requests for payments, known as prior authorizations. Call it the denials for dollars business.

Fish is often sold as the perfect climate-friendly dinner: highly nutritious and lower carbon than other forms of protein. But new research is increasingly bringing some of these eco marketing claims into question. In part, because industrial fishing – scientists and campaigners say – is weakening the ocean’s ability to act as a carbon sink. Over the last 60 years, the ocean, forests and other natural carbon sinks have absorbed over half of all man-made emissions, slowing down global warming. Yet, as temperatures rise, scientists warn such processes could be on the brink of collapse.

Leaked Report Finds Israel Targeting United Nations Troops In Lebanon

Israel’s military has attacked UNIFIL troops deployed on the Lebanon–Israel border a dozen times, including possibly with white phosphorus, the Financial Times (FT) reported on 22 October. According to a confidential report prepared by a country contributing troops to the UN mission, Israeli forces forcibly entered a clearly marked UN base and are suspected of using the incendiary chemical white phosphorus, injuring 15 UN soldiers. Israeli forces began targeting UN troops shortly after launching ground operations across the border into Lebanon on 1 October. UNIFIL has called the attacks “deliberate” and a “flagrant violation of international law.”

Journalist Jeremy Loffredo, Detained In Israel, Heads Home

Jeremy Loffredo, the journalist from Toms River who was detained in Israel and charged with "aiding the enemy during wartime," has left Israel, a State Department spokesman said Monday. Loffredo was arrested Oct. 8 at a checkpoint in the West Bank and held in detention until a judge ordered his release Friday. The allegations against him stemmed from his reporting for The Grayzone, which included information about the locations of strikes launched at military targets inside Israel this month. Asked about Loffredo at a press briefing, spokesman Vedant Patel answered, "My understanding is that he has left Israel," but he provided no further detail.

A new report out Monday puts "into numbers the trend that ordinary Americans have known to be true for years," said economic justice advocates behind the analysis: "Their everyday struggles of affording a home are made worse by the sweeping influence that billionaires have over the market." The Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) joined Popular Democracy in compiling a 71-page report titled Billionaire Blowback on Housing, aiming to get to the bottom of growing concerns in recent years about how Wall Street, as Democratic vice presidential nominee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said earlier this month, is "buying up housing and making them less affordable."

And there’s the mold that grows in the floorboards and walls of his apartment — the mold that has sent him three times to the emergency room, the mold he’s been breathing in his entire life. On Nov. 17, 2023, an eight-months-pregnant Beatriz Caban moved into Sunset Ridge Apartments, a 312-unit low-income complex nestled in the northeast corner of New Haven, Conn. She found mold for the first time that day, along with a bucket in the laundry room next door, filled to the brim with water dripping from the ceiling.

As US presidential elections approach in the coming weeks, activists and organizers are ringing the alarm bells about the broad practice of voter suppression that still exists in the United States. On October 19, a group of students and activists at the historically Black institution of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia marched in protest of election measures that they compare to Jim Crow laws that enshrined racist oppression into law for decades in the US South. A 2021 law, dubbed the Election Integrity Act, has made it illegal in Georgia for anyone to hand out water to those waiting in line to vote—polling lines which can often last for several hours in the Southern heat.

Big Ag Uses ‘Regenerative Agriculture’ To Mask Business-As-Usual

During September’s Climate Week in New York City, the world’s major food companies lined up to share their pro-nature credentials, claiming that they are embracing “regenerative agriculture” practices that will reduce their massive carbon footprint. However, a new report finds that multinational food and ag companies – such as Cargill, Bayer and Unilever – which are using the term, have barely changed how they do business. A total of 30 major agriculture companies were analysed in the report, which was released in September by the New Climate Institute. It found that while around 80 percent of the firms were heavily referencing the phrase “regenerative agriculture” in their climate and sustainability strategies, only a third had targets, and many lacked specifics on how plans would be implemented, or applied them to just small subsets of their total operations.

A row of executives from grain-processing behemoth Archer Daniels Midland watched as Verlyn Rosenberger, 88, took the podium at a Decatur city council meeting earlier this month. It was the first meeting since she and the rest of her central Illinois community learned of a second leak at ADM’s carbon dioxide sequestration well beneath Lake Decatur, their primary source of drinking water. “Just because CO2 sequestration can be done doesn’t mean it should be done,” the retired elementary school teacher told the city council. “Pipes eventually leak.” ADM’s facility in central Illinois was the first permitted commercial carbon sequestration operation in the country.

Iran, Saudi Arabia In Talks For Joint Naval Drills

The Iranian and Saudi navies are planning to hold a joint exercise in the Red Sea region, Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Shahram Irani announced on 22 October. ISNA news agency quoted Irani as saying that the Iranian naval forces are present in the Red Sea and that Saudi Arabia has expressed interest in organizing joint maneuvers in the region. The admiral stressed that the delegations from both countries would hold consultations on organizing the maneuver, adding that they had extended mutual invitations to visit each other's ports. Iran and Saudi Arabia normalized relations in March 2023 following a six-year rupture through talks brokered by China.
