How Nonviolent Resistance Is Shaping 2016 Elections

By Erica Chenoweth for Vox - Violence has gotten a lot of attention in the 2016 presidential race — from the kicking and punching of protestors at Trump’s rallies to incitements of violence against Muslim refugees and Mexican immigrants to promises by various candidates to use overwhelming military force to destroy the Islamic State. But nonviolent resistance — that is, when unarmed civilians use a coordinated set of actions, such as protests, strikes, and noncooperation to directly confront opponents without harming or threatening to harm them

Cops Still Killing People, But Nation Has Stopped Paying Attention

By Nick Wing and Julia Craven for The Huffington Post - The call came through Officer Geoffrey Freeman’s radio a few minutes before 10 a.m. on Feb. 8. “Complaint that somebody jumped a fence and tried to chase a neighbor,” the police dispatcher in Austin, Texas, said. “Black male, tall, thin, wearing jeans, boxers.” The dispatcher left Freeman with a final detail. “No weapons,” she can be heard saying just before the call, later released to the public, cuts out.

Black Culture Isn’t The Problem – Systemic Inequality Is

By Boots Riley for The Guardian - The idea that it is black folks and our supposedly immoral and savage culture that creates our disproportionate rates of poverty and imprisonment is everywhere: cop shows, news media, movies set in black neighborhoods and high-school social studies classes have all perpetuated this misconception. And some are now using this old, false idea to disparage Black Lives Matter, saying that the real problem facing black communities isn’t police violence, racist oppression or economic exploitation but “black-on-black crime”.

Forged In Activism: An Interview With Makayla Gilliam-Price

By Samantha English for Tote Magazine - Most 18-year-olds are freaking out about college applications and graduating high school. Though Makayla Gilliam-Price is certainly getting excited about college and is studying hard at her high school, she is also establishing herself as a powerful voice in the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Makayla is occupying Baltimore’s City Hall, organizing student walkouts, marching in protests, eloquently writing about the racism penetrating the Baltimore police department, and leading even more actions as an activist, all before entering adulthood.

Newsletter: The Corruption Of Money

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers. As tax day approaches, there will be numerous reports about how US oligarchs – wealthy individuals and major corporations – do not pay their fair share in taxes. A GAO report released this week found “at least two-thirds of active U.S. corporations paid zero federal income taxes between 2006 and 2012. The report also found that large, profitable corporations only paid 14% of their profits in federal income taxes on average from 2008 through 2012, while approximately one-fifth of them paid nothing at all.” This is not only due to tax laws that provide corporations with a wide array of loopholes to lower their taxes, but is also due to the intentional hiding of money off-shore. A 2015 report found that nearly 75% of Fortune 500 companies tucked away $2.1 trillion in accumulated profits offshore to avoid paying US income taxes.

Why Black Lives Matter And Fight For 15 Are Protesting Side-By-Side

By Kira Lerner for Think Progress - BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — On Thursday, low-wage workers across the country are taking to the streets to demand a $15 minimum wage. In New York, the protests were scheduled for the same day that a New York police officer was set to be sentenced for the killing of Akai Gurley, one of the most high-profile police misconduct cases in recent city history. Though a judge postponed the sentencing of former NYPD officer Peter Liang while allegations of juror misconduct are considered...

Why Labor Movement Must Join Anti-Racist Struggle

By Andrew Tillett-Saks for In These Times. American unions appear on their deathbed. The percentage of workers in unions is at its lowest point in 75 years, corporate politicians have spread union-busting right-to-work laws to more than half the states in the union and labor’s traditional strongholds (from manufacturing to the public sector) are rapidly being eroded. But an opportunity for labor to reverse its fortunes looms large in the Black Lives Matter movement, the largest wave of anti-racist struggle in recent memory. If American labor is going to reverse its declining fortunes, it must begin with attacking American racism. Racism is the lynchpin that holds corporate America together—as well as the shoals upon which American labor has sunk for centuries. Racism in America—past and present, from the colonial to the Trump era—divides workers so to prevent an effective united front.

#BlackLivesMatter Camps At Police Station For 2 Weeks

By Tamara Khandaker for Vice News - Any discussion of anti-black racism in Toronto, much to the frustration of many black Canadians, commonly elicits one response — that it's not as bad as it is in the United States. Patrisse Cullors, LA-based activist and co-founder of Black Lives Matter (BLM), said she didn't even know Canada had issues until she met her husband Janaya Khan, a co-founder of the Toronto chapter of the growing, international movement. It's the only active branch outside of the United States.

No Charges Against Minneapolis Police Officers In Jamar Clark Shooting

By Erin Golden, Paul Walsh and David Chanen for Star Tribune - The two Minneapolis police officers involved in the November shooting death of Jamar Clark will not face criminal charges, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said Wednesday, as he released volumes of evidence that he said prove the officers feared for their lives during the 61-second altercation. Freeman said DNA and other evidence collected after the shooting on a north Minneapolis street show that Clark was not handcuffed during a scuffle with police officers Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze, and that Clark had grabbed for Ringgenberg’s gun after the officer tackled him to the ground.

Being Undocumented Black Immigrant In America Is A ‘Lonely Experience’

By Esther Yu-Hsi Lee for Think Progress - The pendulum swing of the campaign debate on immigration issues has largely centered on either denouncing undocumented Latino immigrants or getting their eligible family members to take to the polls on Election Day. It seems unsurprising that the conversation heavily focuses on Latinos — after all, 59 percent of the 11.3 million undocumented population are from Mexico. But there are also 400,000 undocumented black immigrants living in the United States who have largely been left out of the debate over immigration reform.

NYC’s New Generation Of Militant Activists

By Vienna Rye for Medium - Over the past year and a half, New York City has seen the growth of an organized, militant grassroots movement, lead by young activists of color and completely ignored by the mainstream media. Gaining steam a few months after the Ferguson Uprising in 2014, tens of thousands of New Yorkers began taking to the streets to demand justice for Mike Brown and Eric Garner. Now, seventeen months later, a coordinated network has formed, shutting down the streets on a weekly basis in every single borough.

4 Years Since Chicago Police Officer Killed Rekia Boyd

By Mariame Kaba for In These Times - The fact that Rekia Boyd’s name might be familiar to you is a testament to her family and local Chicago activists’ persistent and effective organizing. Today marks four years since detective Dante Servin killed Rekia in the North Lawndale neighborhood. She was unarmed and hanging out with friends when Servin shot her in the head. He was off-duty and carrying an unregistered gun at the time. Servin is the very rare police officer who was actually tried for the extrajudicial killing of an unarmed Black person.

By Staff of Tele Sur - Protesters said their encampment was attacked by police officers. Police shutdown a Black Lives Matter protest that had set up a camp in front of police headquarters in downtown Toronto Monday. Police reportedly forcibly removed the tents set up by demonstrators and had firefighters on hand doused the fire started by the demonstrators in order to keep warm.

Newsletter: Justice Takes A Lifetime

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers for Popular Resistance. The #BlackLivesMatter movement continues to grow its power and have notable victories, but 600 hundred years of racial oppression, older than the nation itself, will not be rooted out quickly. The movement had a series of electoral and other victories this week. These victories for #BLM and their supporters are notable but problems still persist and the movement must continue to grow and get stronger. There are no quick fixes to a country that is crippled by its history of racism. We must all recognize that the work we are doing for racial, economic and environmental justice requires us to be persistent and uncompromising. achieve the transformational justice we seek will last our lifetimes – a marathon and not a sprint.
