2019 Latin America In Review: Year Of The Revolt of the Dispossessed

A year ago, John Bolton, Trump’s short-lived national security advisor, invoked the 1823 Monroe Doctrine making explicit what has long been painfully implicit: the dominions south of the Rio Grande are the empire’s “backyard.” Yet 2019 was a year best characterized as the revolt of the dispossessed for a better world against the barbarism of neoliberalism. As Rafael Correa points out, Latin America today is in dispute. What follows is a briefing on this crossroads.

U.S. Crusade Against Cuban International Medical Cooperation

As MINREX warned in a statement released August 29, 2019, the United States government has, since last year, been waging an intense, offensive campaign against the medical collaboration Cuba provides, along with threats of sanctions against Cuban leaders and pressure on recipient states to end such cooperation. Directed in detail by the National Security Council at the White House, the campaign has the active participation of Senators and Representatives associated with the anti-Cuban mafia in Florida and rabid State Department officials.

US Vows To ‘Reinforce’ Sanctions, Accuses Venezuela And Cuba Of Stirring Regional ‘Strife’

Caracas, November 28, 2019 (venezuelanalysis.com) – The Trump administration has pledged to continue economic sanctions against Venezuela in its ongoing bid to oust the Maduro government. Speaking at a press conference at the State Department Wednesday, Special Envoy for Venezuela Elliott Abrams defended US regime change policy, which he said would “continue.” “There’s no change… What is next is, I would say, a continuation of the current policy,” he said in response to questions about the status of US efforts more than ten months after recognizing opposition politician Juan Guaido as “interim president” of Venezuela.

Cuban Doctors Who Provided Health Services In Bolivia Are Returning To Cuba

Government sources have confirmed with Granma that the first group of the more than 700 Cuban medical professionals who provided medical attention in the Plurinational State of Bolivia, are returning to their homeland from the city of Santa Cruz, in a Cubana airliner. On November 13, four members of the Medical Brigade in El Alto were arrested by Bolivian police as they were returning to their place of residence with money taken from a bank to pay for basic services and rents for the 107 members of the Medical Brigade in that region.

Cuba’s Urban Farming Shows Way To Avoid Hunger

LONDON, 11 November, 2019 − When countries run short of food, they need to find solutions fast, and one answer can be urban farming. That was the remedy Cuba seized with both hands 30 years ago when it was confronted with the dilemma of an end to its vital food imports. And what worked then for Cuba could have lessons today for the wider world, as it faces growing hunger in the face of the climate crisis. When the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990s, most of Cuba’s food supplies went with it.

Nearly Unanimous: 187 Nations Call For The End To US Blockade Of Cuba

New York - For the 28th time the UN member states call to lift the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States. To Cuba. With 187 votes in favor, the United Nations Organization (UN) approved the resolution on the need to lift the financial, economic and commercial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, which constitutes a violation of human rights and international regulations. The results of the vote held on Thursday demonstrate the "unquestionable isolation of the US," said Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez. The resolution against the blockade against Cuba received only three votes against (USA, Israel and Brazil) and two abstentions (Colombia and Ukraine).

Pink Tide Against US Domination Rising Again In Latin America

Once again, the left is rising in Latin America as people revolt against authoritarian regimes, many of whom were put in place by US-supported coups. These regimes have taken International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans and are under the thumb of international finance, which is against the interests of people. After the embattled President of Ecuador claimed that President Nicolas Maduro was the cause of the massive protests against him, Maduro made clear what was occurring in Latin America, saying: “We have two models: the IMF model which privatizes everything and takes away the people’s rights to health, education and work; and the humanist-progressive model which is emerging in Latin America and has the Bolivarian Revolution at the forefront.”

Sowing Hardship And Discouragement: The Failed American Strategy Against Cuba

The enmity of the United States Government led by Dwight D. Eisenhower against Cuba manifested itself on January 1, 1959 when it welcomed the murderers and torturers of the Batista dictatorship who fled to the United States with more than 400 million dollars belonging to Cuban public funds. One of the first measures taken against the young Revolution was to reduce the supply of oil, refuse to refine oil from the USSR in June 1960 and eliminate the sugar quota that same year.

US Caused $4.5 Billion In Losses To Cuba Over The Last Year

The U.S. economic blockade has caused over US$ 138.8 billion in losses to Cuba since the 1960s. Cuba's Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Friday presented a report on the impact caused by the U.S .blockade policy on the Cuban economy over the last year. "The U.S. blockade against Cuba impacts, as never before, on the everyday life of every Cuban family, in every sector of our economy, in every social development project in the country," Rodriguez said and anticipated that his country will insist on the elimination of such arbitrary policy before the international community.

Ottawa Goes To Havana To Talk Venezuela. Returns Empty-Handed

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland has just concluded a working visit to Cuba on August 28 intended to discuss the “crisis in Venezuela” with her Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez. A reading of the news release from the Ministry indicates that there were no tangible results aside from a statement that the two foreign ministers had “different perspectives on the crisis in Venezuela”, having agreed to disagree, and that “senior officials would stay in contact and continue to exchange views”.

Cuba: U.S. Government Earmarks Millions To Hinder Cuban Medical Cooperation

The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement today strongly rejecting a USAID program against Cuban medical cooperation projects. Cuban News Agency reproduces the full text of the statement: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly denounces and condemns the recent aggression against Cuba by the Government of the United States through a USAID program aimed at financing actions and to search for information to discredit and sabotage the international cooperation provided by Cuba in the area of health in dozens of countries and for the benefit of millions of people.

Interview With Aleida Guevara, Che’s Daughter

Dr Aleida Guevara’s famous surname still evokes adulation among admirers of Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, the Argentine revolutionary. His iconic image, with his beret, intense, faraway look and brooding visage, snapped by Alberto Korda, has become a symbol of resistance and idealism. Beneath a black-and-white photograph of Che’s, which has pride of place in Politburo member MA Baby’s house in Thiruvananthapuram, Aleida, a medical practitioner like her father, settled down to talk about her father, his legacy and how present-day Cuba continues to be stand up to the economic blockade imposed by the US.

This Stack Of Papers Has More Rights Than You + Cuba

As ecosystems around the world fall into death spirals and scientists cry out that the point of no return is upon us, a look at our justice systems highlight the pitfalls and fallacies in our thinking. For instance, did you know that your right to clean air, water and food pales in comparison to the rights of a stack of papers? Next up, July 26th marked the 66th anniversary of the Cuban revolution. Netfa Freeman joins us to talk about building solidarity, exchanging ideas and Afro-Cuban racial justice.

Join The 50th Brigade

Cuba is the only country on earth that US citizens can’t travel to freely. In the 50 year tradition of the Venceremos Brigade, this July (2019), we will travel to Cuba to practice solidarity with the Cuban People and their struggles, many of which are due U.S. policy. We do this through voluntary labor, donations of material aid, relationships building and dialogue between our peoples. We have much to learn from each other about building a more just and equitable world. During the 50th brigade, more Americans than ever will have the opportunity to travel to Cuba within these values.

The Latest Imperial Aberration; Preparing “Guaidos” For Cuba

Following such a failure in Venezuela you really have to be desperate to insist on creating leaders to oust governments. But the heads of the White House’s aberration team never seem to learn and now is intending to create another Guaido, this time in Cuba. We heard about this plan thanks to the Twitter page of the Cuban Ambassador to the United States, Jose R. Cabañas. He wrote on the social media that, “while the U.S. Administration is strengthening measures of the blockade against Cuba, the State Department has announced a program to manufacture Cuban ‘Guaidos’.  Don’t they read history?”
