Iran Agrees To Nuclear Talks With European States

Iran has agreed to hold nuclear talks with the UK, France, and Germany, an informed source told the semi-official Tasnim News Agency on 20 July. “Tehran and the European troika have come to an agreement in principle on the resumption of the talks about Iran’s nuclear program, but the timing and location of the negotiations are under debate,” the Iranian source said. “The decision as to which country will be hosting the upcoming talks has not been finalized yet,” the source added. The report goes on to say that “Iran was considering a request from the EU3 about the resumption of talks on the nuclear issue and the removal of sanctions.”

What To Do When You, Too, Become A ‘Terrorist’: New Zine Launch

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network is launching a new zine, “What to do when you, too, become a ‘terrorist’” — inspired by our own experience being banned in Germany and being labeled a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT)” by the United States and a “terrorist entity” by Canada, and by the ongoing attempts of the British state to proscribe Palestine Action as a “terrorist” organization. Of course, it is also influenced by the years of state repression targeting a wide array of liberation struggles and movements, from the Black Liberation Movement to Indigenous warriors to Puerto Rican independentistas, not to mention the designation of Palestinian, Lebanese, Yemeni, Iranian, Filipino and other resistance organizations as “terrorists” by the imperialist powers.

Protest Ramstein Air Base: ‘Young And Old Will Suffer The Consequences’

With the slogan "Stop Ramstein Air Base," the anti-war movement will protest against the US's war-making this Saturday. What is the reason for this rally against the military base near Kaiserslautern? As the largest US air base in Europe, Ramstein is a symbol of the use of European military bases for attacks around the world. The military base is allegedly being used to transfer weapons to Israel and also to fuel the Iran war with US bombs. Ramstein serves as a logistical hub for many of the bloody US wars. The air base is relevant to the US war machine. It is important that the German public stands up against this – and does not accept that the US continues to act as it has done so far.

US Relocates Forces From Gulf Bases Ahead Of Possible Iran Strike

On 18 June, the US began relocating aircraft and naval assets from key military sites in West Asia over concerns of potential Iranian retaliation, two US officials told reporters on condition of anonymity. The repositioning effort includes aircraft not housed in hardened shelters at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, and naval vessels previously stationed at the port of Bahrain, home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet. One official said the moves fall under standard force protection procedures. “It is not an uncommon practice,” the official said. “Force protection is the priority.”

Trump Fascism: A Reality Check

With the second coming of Trump, many who profess left credentials again proclaim fascism is back, after we voted “fascism” out in 2020. Every four years we hear the story: “this election is the most important in our lifetime.” Republicans are the new fascism, Democrats are the lesser evil. No matter corporate interests fund both parties and dictate their policies. No matter Democrat Biden green-lighted the ongoing slaughter in Gaza. No matter Biden deported more than Trump did, no matter every year the police killed more under Biden than Trump. Trump is the Hitler, not Biden. So once again, time for a reality check on actually existing fascism.

War In Our Time

Friedrich Merz has been in office as Germany’s new chancellor a matter of weeks, and already he has the German capital aflutter with worry about the increasing danger of a third world war. More to the point, while Germans are fearful of such a prospect, the Russians are warning of it. In a series of recent remarks, notably on German television, Merz has stopped just short of stating that he intends to authorize supplies of German-made ballistic missiles to Ukraine and to do so without imposing restrictions on the Kiev regime’s use of them to attack Russian territory. This is a tripwire for Moscow, as Merz cannot possibly fail to see.

Across Europe, People Urge Intervention To Stop Gaza Genocide

Thousands of protesters in Berlin, Paris, and Stockholm have demanded their governments break silence on Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, urging immediate international intervention and sanctions against the regime. In Berlin, thousands of people assembled at Oranienplatz on Saturday to protest Israel’s intensified airstrikes and ground invasion of Gaza. The demonstrators chanted slogans like “Freedom for Palestine,” “Germany finances, Israel bombs,” “Israel is a terrorist state,” and “Stop the genocide.” German protesters asserted that no person or state has the right to deny an entire people their rights, displace them, or commit acts of violence against them. Some German protesters of Jewish descent also joined the rally.

EU Sanctions Red. Media For Covering Crackdown On Palestine Protests

The EU Council’s latest sanctions, intended to deter Russia’s war with Ukraine, include red. media founder Hüseyin Doğru, and AFA Medya (which operates red.), citing their coverage of Germany’s pro-Palestine protests which the council claims “supports” Russia. Since the EU began rolling out one sanctions package after another in the wake of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the targeting of Doğru marks the first time the EU has used this weapon in the service of Germany’s crackdown on Palestine solidarity, a crackdown which has been condemned by UN officials and human rights groups.

Trump’s Far-Fetched Attempt To Divide Russia And China Is Clearly Failing

US President Donald Trump claimed he would “un-unite” Russia and China. However, this divide-and-conquer strategy — which prominent US officials like Henry Kissinger have advocated since the 1970s — is clearly failing. In a meeting in Moscow celebrating the 80th anniversary of their nations’ shared victory in World War Two, Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin reaffirmed that “China-Russia relations have reached the highest level in history”. In a lengthy statement, Beijing and Moscow vowed to “jointly resist any attempts to interfere with and disrupt the traditional friendship and deep mutual trust between China and Russia”.

On The 77th Anniversary Of The Nakba And Israeli Support Of Genocide

Jew hatred in Germany, as compared to the Israeli hatred of Arabs, was not as intense or broadly supported. The industrial murder of Jews was a late development in Nazi Germany. It was not that well known and took place mostly outside of the country. The murder of Arabs is advocated by several Israeli war cabinet members who have publicly declared that they are fascists. The genocide carried out against the Palestinians is not covered up. It cannot be. Not in the age of the Internet. There’s a long-standing policy of Zionism to overwhelm and displace the native Palestinians. This goes all the way back to Ben Gurion.

Diplomatic Chess, Ukraine The Pawn

As was universally expected, little came out of Istanbul this week, where Ukrainian and Russian delegations met with the ostensible purpose of exploring a negotiated settlement of the proxy war the U.S. provoked three years ago. It is an odd state of affairs when even the people doing the talking did not anticipate anything useful to emerge from their talking. After less than two hours of negotiation, the two sides agreed only to future talks on subsidiary questions: a prisoner exchange and a 30–day ceasefire — a ceasefire Kiev and its Western backers refused for years but are now desperate to implement.

Who Defeated The Nazis? A Colloquy

On June 6, 2019 President Trump commemorated the 75th Anniversary of Operation Overlord, popularly known as D-Day, when approximately 160,000 U.S., British, Canadian and Free French soldiers landed in and around the beaches of Normandy, France. Speaking at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer, where the remains of 9,388 American fighting men, most of whom perished on D-Day, are interned, Trump promoted the mythology of American omniscience that was born on the beaches of Normandy. … For Americans, D-Day stands out among all others when it comes to celebrating the Second World War.

Germany In Crisis Part 4: Wanderers And Seekers

Dresden, May 6 — Friedrich Merz barely managed to assume power Tuesday as the Federal Republic’s 10th chancellor, having fallen six votes short of the number he needed when the first Bundestag ballots were counted in a morning vote. Berlin was reeling for most of the day as it faced a political impasse unprecedented in postwar German history. A second ballot, held hurriedly later in the afternoon, got Merz over the line by a margin of nine votes. While Bundestag members vote secretly, the numbers indicate that some members of his new coalition betrayed him. Among the German analysts with whom I spoke today, the interesting question now is how long Merz will manage to remain as chancellor.

Germany In Crisis Part 3: A Culture Of Submission

Berlin— I return briefly to those singular moments when Olaf Scholz stood next to President Joe Biden at a press conference on Feb. 7, 2022, after concluding private talks in the Oval Office. This was the occasion when Biden declared that if Russian forces entered Ukrainian territory—as he was by this time confident they would have no choice but to do—“then there will no longer be a Nord Stream II. We will bring an end to it.”  Take a moment to view the video record of this event. What do we see in those two men? Let us consider their demeanor, their gestures, their facial expressions, what each said and left unsaid, and read what we can into them. I read a 77–year history.

Germany In Crisis Part 2: A Short History Of Exploding Gas Pipelines

A single, brief phrase always comes to mind when I think of Germany. Whatever may be the specific matter to hand, sooner or later my thoughts go to three words that seem to me — and to many others, given they have survived so long in the discourse — to capture some essence of the nation and its place in the world. “Germany is Hamlet.” For a long time I attributed this pithy observation to Gordon Craig, among Germany’s great 20th century historians. Craig (Germany, 1866–1945; The Germans) was noted for succinct observations of this kind. He saw Germany as a nation divided in history between its humanist achievements (Goethe et al., Kant et al., Thomas Mann et al.) and its regrettable givenness to varieties of absolute power.
