Why “Countering Violent Extremism” Programs Won’t Stop White Supremacists

As the daughter of Muslim Egyptian immigrants, I’m used to getting surprised looks when I tell people I grew up in a small Appalachian town in Western Maryland. A town where teens dared each other to drive up to the old church where local KKK members would supposedly meet. Boys I knew and rode the school bus with would go on to become Neo-Nazis. I had just started high school in 2001, making me — the only Muslim girl in high school in our county — a walking target after Sept. 11. I know the violence of white supremacy intimately. But I disagree with those who are currently criticizing the Trump administration for defunding Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) programs that supposedly target white supremacists.

Palestinians Denounce Hollywood Stars’ $60m For Israeli Army ‘Terror’

RAMALLAH, West Bank - As Hollywood stars celebrated at a fundraiser for the Israeli army last week in Los Angeles, halfway across the world Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip were waking up for another Friday of protest and bloodshed. The gala on 1 November, organised by Friends of the Israeli Defence Forces and attended by actors such as Ashton Kutcher, Gerard Butler and Andy Garcia, was praised by Israel and its supporters for raising a record $60 million and bringing together more than 1,200 people. A memorandum of understanding signed between Israel and Barack Obama's US administration in 2016 included a record $38bn deal to provide Israel with military assistance over a ten-year period, the largest such pledge in American history.

Meet Ten Corporate Giants Helping Israel Massacre Gaza Protesters

NEW YORK — As Israeli soldiers gun down unarmed Palestinian demonstrators in the Great March of Return, their lethal operations depend on an array of contractors and suppliers, many of them companies based outside Israel. “The Israeli military relies on a network of international companies, supplying everything from sniper rifles to tear gas, to carry out its massacres of protesters in Gaza,” Tom Anderson, a researcher for Corporate Occupation, told MintPress News. “These companies are knowingly supporting war crimes, and are complicit in state-orchestrated murder.” Since the mobilization began on March 30, Israeli forces have killed 205 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip...

Canada Is Richer Than The US, According To A New Wealth Ranking — In Fact, The US Doesn’t Even Make The Top 10

The United States is home to more millionaires than any other country in the world. But whether the country is truly the wealthiest in the world depends on how you measure. A report released by Credit Suisse in October says the US is "in the lead" when it comes to global wealth. But a closer look at the numbers in that report reveals a different story. While it's true that wealth in the US is growing faster than anywhere else in the world, it's not the richest when you compare the average amount of wealth per adult. That prize goes to Switzerland, as you can see in the map below.

Disregard For World Opinion Defines The US Government

Last week, the United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to condemn the US embargo against Cuba. A total of 189 member-nations said Cuba did not deserve this embargo, which began in 1961 and has continued unabated to this day. Only two countries – the United States and Israel – voted against the motion. No country abstained. Cuba’s minister for foreign affairs, Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla, has said the US embargo has cost the small socialist island state upwards of US$933.678 billion, with the losses in the past year amounting to $4.3 billion (twice the amount of foreign direct investment into the island). This embargo, Rodríguez Parrilla said as he put the resolution forward, is an “act of genocide” against Cuba and its people.

Chicanos Welcome Central American Caravan

Los Angeles, CA – On October 26, as the caravan of refugees from Central America traveled through Mexico, they were welcomed with food, festivity, aid, and clothing. As Chicanos, we must do the same when the caravan arrives at U.S. border. Attacking Mexicans, and by extension Chicanos, Trump has dispatched the U.S. military to the U.S.-Mexico border to block the caravan. We say down with Trump, down with him hiding like a coward behind the U.S. military, down with the continued militarization, killings and abuses at the border, down with the injustices to the undocumented in the U.S., and down with the U.S. destabilization of Central America. We must demand legalization for all current 11 million undocumented people in the U.S., and asylum now for the caravan refugees when they arrive at the border.

Democracy, Class And The Fight Against Recolonization

Having lost Eurasia, the US elites and their allies have focused much more attention on Latin America and the Caribbean in order to re-consolidate their absolute control of the region's resources. They work to destroy the movements and political leaders who defend impoverished majorities against the neocolonial agenda of the West. Western elites devote special attention, along with their local allies, to the elimination of all expression of international sovereignty. From within countries, they undermine and co-opt governments and institutions. From the outside, they deploy all kinds of financial, commercial, diplomatic and media aggression, in addition to the blatant military harassment.

Trump’s Call To ‘Protect’ Border Reactivates Vigilante Militias

Armed anti-immigration groups of civilian volunteers have been reactivated at the call of President Donald Trump to protect the U.S. from the “invasion” of Central American asylum-seekers, and are preparing to install themselves at the border with their rifles. After years of relative inactivity, the Texas Minutemen militia summoned volunteers for a watchout operation at the border with Mexico in order to aid the border patrol and the 15,000 troops that Trump is allegedly dispatching to the border to stop the migrant caravan. The organization, similar to a paramilitary group, is headed by the private investigator Shannon McGauley, who said they’re preparing scores of armed volunteers to guard three points at the Texas border.

Jeff Sessions Interrupted By Religious Leaders During Speech, Tell Him To ‘Repent’ And ‘Care For Those In Need’

Attorney General Jeff Sessions had just begun his speech at the Boston Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society on Monday when he was interrupted by two religious leaders in protest. Sessions was due to speak about "the future of religious liberty” when a man who identified himself as a “fellow United Methodist,” the same denomination as Sessions, stood up and began to protest, according to footage of the speech. “Brother Jeff, as a fellow United Methodist, I call upon you to repent,” the man said. “To care for those in need. To remember that when you do not care for others, you are wounding the body of Christ.” The man was likely referring to the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

‘That’s Not Who We Are?’ Well, You Are What You Do, Your Actions Speak For Themselves

How often do we hear those words, “that’s not who we are”, uttered in situations when Americans see or hear something extremely troubling or of a tragic event or action initiated by someone in this government or in our society; one that brings great harm to people in America or in some other part of the world? We hear that phrase so often. It’s like it’s been embedded in our culture. It’s kind of an excuse or a form of self-denial when we see something that is too painful to accept. Here’s a quote that puts for the truth of the matter: “You are what you do, not what you say you do:” And as the title says, your actions speak for themselves. Now, in that phrase of self-denial what is the meaning of the word “we?”

Israel Invokes Its “Fight for Survival” As It Descends Into a Racist State

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza has confirmed that over 100 Palestinians were killed in a single day during the 30th March of Return held October 19, and yet the Israeli government is being criticized from within for not being tough enough. Hard as it may be to believe — even though Israel’s ongoing response to the Gaza Return March protests can only be described as extremely heavy-handed, injuring thousands and killing hundreds — there are calls from within the Israeli cabinet and the Knesset, as well as the press, demanding Netanyahu and his defense minister Lieberman adopt a more “heavy-handed” response. Education Minister Naftali Bennet referred to Israeli policy as “restrained” when he stated that, “the policy of restraint has failed.”

Saudi Arabia Financed The Killers Of American Troops I Commanded

It’s time to ask an uncomfortable question: What exactly is the U.S. getting out of its partnership with Saudi Arabia? The answer is: nothing but headaches, human rights abuses and national embarrassment. In the cynical past, the U.S. could at least argue that it needed Saudi oil, but that’s no longer the case, due to the shale-oil boom (though that fact is not necessarily good for an ever-warming planet). Recently, the crimes of the Saudi government managed to pierce the Trump-all-the-time-Kanye-West-sometimes media-entertainment complex due to Riyadh’s likely murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi. That the U.S.-Saudi relationship is, however briefly, coming under the proverbial microscope is a good thing.

No One In The United States Should Be Poor, Period

The federal minimum wage hasn’t gone up in nearly 10 years. Yet with a stroke of his pen, Jeff Bezos of Amazon raised the wages of hundreds of thousands of the company’s lowest paid workers. In an age of extreme income inequality, this is leap in the right direction. It’s also a stark reminder of how far we as a nation are from caring for our most vulnerable people. Consider the story of Vanessa Solivan, an East Trenton mother of three struggling in and out of homelessness. Vanessa is “working homeless,” an increasingly common phenomenon as the gap between wages and cost of living grows wider. In the richest country in the world, millions of families shouldn’t have to struggle every day to get by while wealth concentrates into fewer and fewer hands at the top.

With Little Left To Lose, Gaza’s Great Return March Protesters Ramp Up Their Resistance

UNITED NATIONS — As the Great March of Return roared past its half-year anniversary last Friday, it also seemed to reach levels of resistance and repression not seen in months. The escalation aims to “put more pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities, hoping they meet the protesters’ demands — lifting the siege and recognizing the right to return,” a spokesperson for the Hamas movement told MintPress News. Every Friday since March 30, the demonstration has mobilized thousands of Palestinians to a military barrier erected by Israel around the Gaza Strip. Protesting both an 11-year closure of the Palestinian enclave imposed by Israel and Egypt, and Israel’s ongoing refusal to allow millions of Palestinian refugees — including two-thirds of the Gaza Strip’s population...
