Independence Trial Protest Organizers Celebrate A “Historic” March In Madrid

Organizers of the protest against the Catalan trial have celebrated a “historic” march in Madrid in a “context of political repression”. For the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) president Elisenda Paluzie this demonstration showed the unity of “all the peoples of Spain” for the right to self-determination. The vicepresident of Omnium Cultural, Marcel Mauri, deemed the protest as a “wall” against intolerance and hate. Thousands of people rallied against the ongoing independence trial on Saturday through Paseo de Prado – the symbolic and geographical heart of the Spanish capital – under the banners "Self-determination is not a crime" and "Democracy is about deciding".

Global Climate Strike In Pictures: Millions Of Students Walk Out To Demand Planetary Transformation

"We are facing the greatest existential crisis humanity has ever faced. And yet it has been ignored. You who have ignored it know who you are.” All over the planet on Friday, millions of children and young adults walked out of their classrooms in an unprecedented collective action to demand a radical and urgent shift in society's energy and economic systems in order to avert the worst impacts of human-caused global warming and climate change.

A Year After The March, Gaza Organizer Explains Why The Protests Continue

Salah Abdel Ati lived through the First Intifada as a young student and a leader of the student movement in Gaza. Now, in very different circumstances, he is one of the organizers of the protests taking place along the dividing line between Gaza and Israel. He came to Rome for a series of events organized by Cultura è Libertà, Assopace and Rete Romana, part of his European tour that also included a stop at the EU Parliament. Speaking with us in the courtyard of the International Women’s House in Rome, he summed up a year of non-stop demonstrations in Gaza, an event that reminded many of the Intifada.

Venezuelans March Against Attack On Electric Grid System In Anti-imperialist Day

The march gathered thousands of Venezuelans that protest imperialist intervention in the country, two days after the attack on its electric system. Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets Saturday to march against interventionism in the country, as part of the celebrations of the national Bolivarian Anti-imperialist Day. The march started at 09:00 a.m. local time from the headquarters of Venezuela's TV Channel 8 and it mobilized down Av. Libertador de Caracas to the Presidential Palace of Miraflores, where President Nicolas Maduro and the countries political leaders received the gathering crowd.

Algeria: What’s Fuelling The Country’s Mass Protest Movement?

President Bouteflika's decision to run for fifth term is only one cause of widespread public anger. Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s decision to run for a fifth presidential term - despite his poor health and advanced age - is a non-starter for many Algerians. Hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets in cities across the country as well as abroad over the past several days to peacefully oppose the candidacy of Bouteflika, 81, shattering a wall of silence and fear. The current Algerian government did not anticipate this unprecedented level of mobilisation. It also shouldn't expect it to end quickly.

As Big Lincoln Yards Vote Looms, Protesters Call On Ald. James Cappleman To ‘Delay The TIF’

UPTOWN — On Thursday, the massive Lincoln Yards development will advance to the City Council’s Zoning Committee. And while the project is miles from Ald. James Cappleman’s North Side ward, his position as chair of the powerful committee has made him a target for those opposed to the development — and the $900 million tax subsidy that goes along with it. “Hey Cappleman, you can’t hide, we can see your greedy side,” protesters chanted outside the 46th Ward aldermanic office at 4544 N. Broadway on Tuesday.

Hundreds Of Sacramento Students Walk Out, March To Capitol In Stephon Clark Protest

Continuing a week of civic unrest and political turmoil in Sacramento, high school and college students walked off their campuses by the hundreds Thursday to join a boisterous and at times angry four-hour march to the state Capitol to demand reforms on police use of force. The protesters, organized by campus chapters of the Black Student Union, marched in support of Assembly Bill 392, which seeks to change police use of deadly force law. The group also voiced anger at Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert’s decision not to charge two Sacramento officers in the killing of Stephon Clark.

To Fight A Pipeline, Live In A Tree

For almost five months, Phillip Flagg has been living in a chestnut oak tree 50 feet above the ground. His home is a four-by-eight sheet of plywood, a little larger than a typical dining room table, that is lashed to the oak’s boughs. Since going aloft on October 12, he has not set foot on the ground. Below him there’s small group of about a dozen scrupulously anonymous young people who take care of Flagg’s basic human needs. They’re all here to halt the construction of a natural gas pipeline in rural Elliston, in the Virginia highlands near Roanoke. For many of them, organizing, staffing, and supporting long-term eco-protests like this is as a way of life.

More Than 80 People Arrested During Stephon Clark Protest In Sacramento

A reporter and several clergy members were among those detained. More than 80 people were arrested in Sacramento, California, on Monday during a protest over Stephon Clark’s death. A reporter on assignment and several members of the clergy were also detained. Clark, a 22-year-old black man, was shot dead by two Sacramento police officers in March 2018. He was unarmed, but the officers said they mistook his cellphone for a weapon. Prosecutors announced over the weekend that the two officers would not face criminal charges — a decision that sparked protests across the city.

Burnt Tires & Clashes With Police As Pro-Independence Protests Grip Catalonia

Pro-independence activists in Catalonia are venting their anger at Madrid’s trial of the region’s provincial leaders. Baton-wielding police scuffled with some of the demonstrators as people also blocked roads and set tires ablaze. The group behind the protest is called the Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDRs) and has been involved in demonstrations against Spain’s central government for months. The goal of Thursday’s action is to ‘paralyze everything,’ as the group put it.

Nationwide Rallies Denounce #FakeTrumpEmergency And President’s Anti-Immigrant Agenda

The ACLU was swift in its announcement of intent to sue, doing so on Friday. "Let's get something straight upfront," wrote the organization's deputy legal director, Cecillia Wang. "There is no emergency. Members of Congress from both parties, security experts, and Americans who live at the border have all said so. What the president is doing is yet another illegal and dangerous power grab in service of his anti-immigrant agenda." In addition to the rights group, environmental advocacy organizations as well as a number of states have vowed legal challenges to the emergency declaration.

Act 14: The Yellow Vests Protests Persist

Thousands of "yellow vest" protesters marched across France Saturday, three months since the movement began and in a week that has seen growing international concern at police treatment of the protesters. Demonstrating for the 14th consecutive weekend, just over 41,000 people turned out across the country, according to the government, well down on the 282,000 peak during the protests' early weeks. An interior ministry statement said 41,500 people had demonstrated nationwide, 5,000 of them in Paris. Organisers of the marches, however, put the numbers far higher.

On Valentine’s Day, The Fight To Stop The Williams Pipeline Hits The Heart Of NYC

New York, NY – A clear message to Governor Andrew Cuomo struck the heart of Times Square this Valentine’s Day. A building-side message was displayed on February 14, 2019 calling the Governor to “Be a real climate leader and stop the Williams fracked gas pipeline”. As New Yorkers gear up for public hearings being held on Tuesday, February 26, organizers argue stopping this dangerous project is Cuomo’s first major test for his commitment to a Green New Deal for New York. “If Cuomo has a heart this Valentine’s Day, he’ll stop the Williams fracked gas pipeline from wreaking havoc on our communities,” said Cata Romo of 350.org and the Stop the Williams Pipeline NY Coalition.

Germany: Fridays For Future

“There’s no point in learning for a future that doesn’t exist.” With this motto, more and more young people this year have taken to the streets every week to fight climate change. On January 18, more than 30,000 school students in more than 50 cities across Germany went on strike. Last Friday, 10,000 of them went to Berlin to exert pressure on the Coal Commission, which presented its results of negotiations at the weekend. There have also been large demonstrations in Switzerland and Belgium in recent weeks: on 18 January, 22,000 school students went on strike in Switzerland; on Thursday, 24 January, 35,000 young demonstrators marched through Brussels - making it the biggest youth protest in many years...

Johns Hopkins’ Latest Plan For Police Force Prompts Protest From Students, Faculty, Neighbors

Worried about over-policing in Baltimore and across the country, Johns Hopkins University students, faculty members and others on Wednesday protested the school’s efforts to establish its own police force. Students Against Private Police demonstrated days before state lawmakers are to debate the issue — and one year after the group defeated a similar effort during the last legislative session. More than 100 people gathered holding signs stating “Keep guns off campus” and “No private police” amid piles of days-old snow outside the Milton S. Eisenhower library.
