Organizers of the protest against the Catalan trial have celebrated a “historic” march in Madrid in a “context of political repression”. For the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) president Elisenda Paluzie this demonstration showed the unity of “all the peoples of Spain” for the right to self-determination. The vicepresident of Omnium Cultural, Marcel Mauri, deemed the protest as a “wall” against intolerance and hate. Thousands of people rallied against the ongoing independence trial on Saturday through Paseo de Prado – the symbolic and geographical heart of the Spanish capital – under the banners "Self-determination is not a crime" and "Democracy is about deciding".

Now, in very different circumstances, he is one of the organizers of the protests taking place along the dividing line between Gaza and Israel. He came to Rome for a series of events organized by Cultura è Libertà, Assopace and Rete Romana, part of his European tour that also included a stop at the EU Parliament. Speaking with us in the courtyard of the International Women’s House in Rome, he summed up a year of non-stop demonstrations in Gaza, an event that reminded many of the Intifada.

Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets Saturday to march against interventionism in the country, as part of the celebrations of the national Bolivarian Anti-imperialist Day. The march started at 09:00 a.m. local time from the headquarters of Venezuela's TV Channel 8 and it mobilized down Av. Libertador de Caracas to the Presidential Palace of Miraflores, where President Nicolas Maduro and the countries political leaders received the gathering crowd.

Continuing a week of civic unrest and political turmoil in Sacramento, high school and college students walked off their campuses by the hundreds Thursday to join a boisterous and at times angry four-hour march to the state Capitol to demand reforms on police use of force. The protesters, organized by campus chapters of the Black Student Union, marched in support of Assembly Bill 392, which seeks to change police use of deadly force law. The group also voiced anger at Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert’s decision not to charge two Sacramento officers in the killing of Stephon Clark.

For almost five months, Phillip Flagg has been living in a chestnut oak tree 50 feet above the ground. His home is a four-by-eight sheet of plywood, a little larger than a typical dining room table, that is lashed to the oak’s boughs. Since going aloft on October 12, he has not set foot on the ground. Below him there’s small group of about a dozen scrupulously anonymous young people who take care of Flagg’s basic human needs. They’re all here to halt the construction of a natural gas pipeline in rural Elliston, in the Virginia highlands near Roanoke. For many of them, organizing, staffing, and supporting long-term eco-protests like this is as a way of life.

A reporter and several clergy members were among those detained. More than 80 people were arrested in Sacramento, California, on Monday during a protest over Stephon Clark’s death. A reporter on assignment and several members of the clergy were also detained. Clark, a 22-year-old black man, was shot dead by two Sacramento police officers in March 2018. He was unarmed, but the officers said they mistook his cellphone for a weapon. Prosecutors announced over the weekend that the two officers would not face criminal charges — a decision that sparked protests across the city.

Thousands of "yellow vest" protesters marched across France Saturday, three months since the movement began and in a week that has seen growing international concern at police treatment of the protesters. Demonstrating for the 14th consecutive weekend, just over 41,000 people turned out across the country, according to the government, well down on the 282,000 peak during the protests' early weeks. An interior ministry statement said 41,500 people had demonstrated nationwide, 5,000 of them in Paris. Organisers of the marches, however, put the numbers far higher.

On January 18, more than 30,000 school students in more than 50 cities across Germany went on strike. Worried about over-policing in Baltimore and across the country, Johns Hopkins University students, faculty members and others on Wednesday protested the school’s efforts to establish its own police force. Students Against Private Police demonstrated days before state lawmakers are to debate the issue — and one year after the group defeated a similar effort during the last legislative session. More than 100 people gathered holding signs stating “Keep guns off campus” and “No private police” amid piles of days-old snow outside the Milton S. Eisenhower library.
