US Imperialism

Syria – Winners And Losers Or Both

Syria has fallen. It is now highly likely that the country will fall apart. Outside and inside actors will try to capture and/or control as many parts of the cadaver as each of them can. Years of chaos and strife will follow from that. Israel is grabbing another large amount of Syrian land. It has taken control of the Syrian city of Quneitra, along with the towns of Al-Qahtaniyah and Al-Hamidiyah in the Quneitra region. It has also advanced into the Syrian Mount Hermon and is now positioned just 30 kilometers from (and above) the Syrian capital. It is also further demilitarizing Syria by bombing every Syria military storage site in its reach.

US, UK Consider Removing HTS From Terror Blacklist

US officials are considering removing Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from the US terrorist list after the offshoot of the Islamic State of Iraq (later known as ISIS) helped achieve the long-term US goal of overthrowing the Syrian government led by President Bashar al-Assad, The Washington Post reported on 9 December. “US officials are in contact with all the groups involved in fighting in Syria, including the main group that ousted Assad, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was once affiliated with Al-Qaeda and remains on a US terrorist list,” the newspaper wrote.

Turkey Takes Aleppo

Before it fell under 20th century Anglo-American colonialism, Syria was the core of the Levant, encompassing (today’s) Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine, the site of multireligious, multicultural cities between which people traveled and traded freely. In the countryside, peasants and herders tended an agricultural and pastoral landscape of olive and orange trees, pasture, forest, and drylands. This region was under the control of the Ottoman Empire for hundreds of years (perhaps Erdogan’s dream is to take some of it back. He’s been accused of “neo-Ottoman” fantasies).

Scott Ritter Lobbies At The Capitol To Avert Nuclear War

Scott Ritter, the former U.S. Marine counterintelligence officer and chief U.N. weapons inspector joined forces with Medea Benjamin and Code Pink to lobby members of the U.S. Hose of Representatives to urgently act to head off what could be impending nuclear war with Russia. Ritter laid out the immediate peril the world faces, which is being dangerously ignored by most of the U.S. government and establishment media. That’s because U.S. intelligence services have foolishly concluded that Russia is bluffing, Ritter argued.

Support Koreans against Yoon!

The labor unions and mass organizations of the people of South Korea deserve the support of everyone who wants to struggle against war and dictatorship. They are fighting at this time — Dec. 4, 2024 — to rid the Seoul regime of its autocratic, anti-worker, pro-war President Yoon Suk-Yeol. On Dec. 3 Yoon declared martial law and sent elite troops to seize the National Assembly. His coup attempt failed, and the Congress voted to lift the coup. Yoon’s own cabinet members had dissented in fear of defeat, and Yoon was forced to retreat within hours of his martial law declaration.

US Influence On The Decline As China And BRICS On The Rise

In recent weeks, various summits and international conferences took place that set the priorities both regionally and internationally for the next several years. Two in particular in the region of Nuestra América highlighted both the growing influence of China and its Belt and Road Initiative and the US empire’s declining power in its “backyard”. Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, APEC 2024 , Perú and the Group of 20, G20 summit , in Río de Janeiro, Brazil took place in November and both provided glaring examples on the world stage of the decline of US influence and the rise of BRICS and China as contending power players in the region.

Regime Change Machine In Venezuela Grinds To A Halt

The extremist sector of the Venezuelan opposition, represented by María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia, suffered a new setback both nationally and internationally on December 1, when a call to protest to demand “justice” before the International Criminal Court resulted in remarkably low participation. “Today, Sunday, December 1, we already have a first task to fulfill: Venezuelans are going to raise our unanimous clamor before the International Criminal Court, where we have already provided sufficient evidence for justice to be done,” Machado said on her social networks.

United Nations Demands Israeli Withdrawal From Golan Heights

The UN General Assembly adopted on 3 December a resolution demanding Israel’s withdrawal from Syria’s illegally occupied Golan Heights, which the Israeli army captured during the 1967 war. The resolution demanded “once more” that Israel withdraw from the occupied Golan Heights “to the line of 4 June 1967" while stressing the illegality of settlement building and other activities in the territory. “The continued occupation of the Syrian Golan and its de facto annexation constitute a stumbling block in the way of achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the region,” it added. Any decision imposing laws or jurisdiction in the region is “null and void and has no validity whatsoever.”

The US And Israel Quietly Revived Al-Qaeda Allies In Syria

As Syrian opposition forces, spearheaded by the Al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, intensify their offensive to seize more territory after capturing Aleppo, Washington has distanced itself from the attack—a remarkable reversal, considering its longstanding support for weaponizing so-called “moderate rebel” groups based in Idlib. Under President Barack Obama, the U.S. government secretly poured billions into a covert operation designed to topple Bashar al-Assad’s government. The CIA’s Timber Sycamore program, one of the agency’s most expensive undertakings, at its peak, funneled $100,000 per Syrian militant trained—many of whom would ultimately fight under the banner of Al-Qaeda-linked factions.

Neocons Try Again in Syria

On the neocon list of ways to make the world safer for Israel, Iran originally occupied pride of place. “Real men go to Tehran!” was the muscular brag. But Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was persuaded to acquiesce in a less ambitious plan — to “do Iraq” and remove the “evil dictator” in Baghdad first. As the invaders/occupiers got bogged down in Iraq, it seemed more sensible to “do Syria” next. With the help of “friendly services,” the neocons mounted a false-flag chemical attack outside Damascus in late August 2013, blaming it on President Bashar al-Assad, whom U.S. President Barack Obama had earlier said, “had to go.”

Syrian Dirty War’s Secret Origins

On November 27th, ultra-extremist militants Hayat Tahrir al-Sham launched a vast offensive in Syria. Within days, the Turkey-backed faction seized significant swaths of Aleppo, the country’s second-largest city, and advances elsewhere continue. While disinformation on the scale and success of HTS’ incursions abounds on social media, establishment news outlets remain a redoubtable source of manipulation and deceit. No context to the current upsurge of violence is provided, although reference has been widely made to supposedly “peaceful” protests in 2011 that produced the decade-long Syrian civil war.

President Maduro Calls For Creation Of ‘Powerful Media Network For The People’

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, proposed the creation of a “powerful media network for the truth of the peoples across all continents, with all languages and on all existing social media of today and those that will be born as alternatives.” He made this proposal on Friday, November 29, at the International Conference in Solidarity with Palestine, held in Caracas. He commented that there is a consensus across the world for “the cause of the struggle for freedom and the right to life of the Palestinian people, and we must do more for Palestine, because still there are many people who are misinformed about the brutal genocide that is being broadcast live.”

Is The United States Headed For Another Middle East War?

Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has taken a hardline position against Yemen’s Ansar Allah movement, advocating policies aimed at reigniting the conflict between Riyadh and Sana’a. Critics warn that his approach could risk dragging the United States into a direct confrontation, escalating tensions in an already volatile region. As vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Marco Rubio has carved out a reputation as a steadfast proponent of hardline policies, particularly against Yemen’s Ansar Allah-led government and its allies. Rubio, who has received over $1 million from pro-Israel donors, has consistently aligned himself with neoconservative hawks.

The Geopolitical Dimensions Of The US BOLIVAR Act

Awaiting approval by the US Senate, the bipartisan bill titled “Banning Operations and Leases with the Illegitimate Venezuelan Authoritarian Regime Act,” known by its forced acronym “BOLIVAR Act,” represents a milestone in the institutionalization of illegal sanctions against Venezuela. This law aims to—under a legislative and bipartisan framework—perpetuating the executive orders that have operated as the core of the economic and financial coercion policy against Venezuela over the past ten years. Within the law, the definition of the term “person” as a legal object establishes an expansion of the scope of sanctions, covering everything from individuals and private entities to governmental bodies and their extensions, thereby creating a vast catalog of potential targets on an international scale.

United States Raises Middle Finger To The International Criminal Court

Finally, before history ends, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The indictment stated that there ‘are reasonable grounds to believe that both individuals intentionally and knowingly deprived the civilian population in Gaza of objects indispensable to their survival, including food, water, and medicine and medical supplies, as well as fuel and electricity’. The court found sufficient reasons to believe that the two men ‘bear criminal responsibility’ for the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare, the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts, and the war crime of intentionally directing an attack against a civilian population.
