Wars and Militarism

‘Forever Wars’ Authorization Finally Repealed By US House

Almost exactly 24 years after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the U.S. House of Representatives voted this week to finally repeal a pair of more than two-decade-old congressional authorizations that have allowed presidents to carry out military attacks in the Middle East and elsewhere. In a 261-167 vote, with 49 Republicans joining all Democrats, the House passed an amendment to the next military spending bill to rescind the Authorizations for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) passed by Congress in the lead-up to the 1991 Persian Gulf War and 2003 War in Iraq. The decision is a small act of resistance in Congress after what the Quincy Institute’s Adam Weinstein described in Foreign Policy magazine as “years of neglected oversight” by Congress over the “steady expansion of presidential war-making authority.”

SanctionsKill Demands An End To US Aggression Against Venezuela

We condemn the escalating US attacks on Venezuela that have been ongoing since the Bolivarian Revolution began in 1998, including pressuring the country to bend to US interests through the imposition of unilateral coercive measures (“sanctions”) since 2015. These illegal measures are deliberately designed to cause inhumane suffering to destabilize the country and compel regime change. It has always been clear that the sanctions on Venezuela are a ploy to gain access to the country’s vast natural resources, including the world’s largest oil reserves. While the coercive measures imposed on Venezuela “succeeded” in causing over 100,000 excess deaths, the imperial objective of regime change was thwarted by President Nicolás Maduro in concert with the people of the country and in firm alliance with their military.

US Revisits ‘War On Drugs’ Routine With A New Target

Venezuela has once again been in the international media spotlight due to the US naval deployment in the waters of the southern Caribbean Sea. This military deployment was officially announced by the US on August 14, but had been reported days earlier by the New York Times. Under the guise of fighting drug trafficking and in parallel with the announcement of an increased reward for the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, the US regime has relaunched its “maximum pressure” campaign against Venezuela. The “bounty” on President Maduro has been doubled to US $50 million, and this time around, the US claims that the president of Venezuela is the head of the nonexistent Cartel of the Suns, the defunct Tren de Aragua criminal gang, and even Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel.

Israeli War Chief Vows To Strike Enemies ‘Wherever They Are’

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on 10 September that Tel Aviv will strike at “enemies” wherever they are in the world, one day after an illegal Israeli airstrike that failed to assassinate senior leaders of Hamas in Qatar. Referring to the attack, dubbed “Operation Summit of Fire,” Katz said, “Israel's security policy is clear – Israel’s long arm will act against its enemies wherever they may be.” “There is no place where they can hide,” the defense minister went on to say. “Everyone who was involved in the 7 October massacre will be held fully accountable. Anyone who engages in terrorism against Israel will be targeted."

Gaza Flotilla In Tunis Attacked By Explosives Delivered By Drones

For the second time in three months, drones carrying explosives have attacked boats in the Gaza flotillas. I was in Malta when the “Conscience” ship was attacked by drones carrying explosives and I am now in Tunis where the “Familia” ship was attacked. Several hours ago in the evening of September 8, an explosive dropped from a drone hit “Familia, ”the lead ship of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) anchored in national Tunisian waters off Port    causing a fire on the bow of the ship.  There were 5 people onboard as the crew and security team. No one was injured. Five months previously, on May 1, 2025, multiple drones dropped explosives on the “Conscience” flotilla ship in international waters off Malta causing such extensive damage to the bow of the ship that it became inoperative.

Hamas Says Leaders Survived Israel’s Attack On Qatar’s Doha

Jeremy Scahill, cofounder of Drop Site News, says the attack in Doha is “yet another sign” that “neither the United States nor Israel are interested in actually having a negotiated end” to the war on Gaza. Scahill underscored that Hamas made major concessions in accepting a ceasefire proposal last month, dropping demands for a timetable for Israeli withdrawal from the border area with Egypt and lowering the number of Palestinian captives it is requesting in exchange for Israelis held in Gaza. The veteran journalist said Israel did not even respond to the Hamas-approved proposal, and instead pushed on with the assault on Gaza City in a plan to forcibly displace more than one million Palestinians.

US Considers Bombing Venezuela; Deploys F-35 Fighter Jets To Puerto Rico

The Trump administration is considering multiple options for launching military strikes against alleged drug cartels in Venezuela, including hitting targets that could weaken Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, as it is deploying F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico, CNN has reported. US officials told CNN that the US bombing of a boat near Venezuela last week was just the beginning of a much larger effort against drug trafficking that could lead to the ouster of Maduro. US officials claim the pressure on Venezuela and Maduro is about drug trafficking and a response to overdose deaths in the US, but fentanyl doesn’t come from or through Venezuela, and the majority of the cocaine that is transported to the US comes through the Pacific, not the Caribbean.

Veterans For Peace Condemns Deployment Of National Guard In DC

Veterans For Peace unequivocally condemns President Trump’s unlawful deployment of the National Guard to Washington, DC. This follows the outrageous deployment of National Guard and U.S. Marines to the streets and parks of Los Angeles in support of ICE terror tactics in a city where as many as one in ten residents are undocumented workers. West Asia Is Lurching Toward War

There is extremely alarming news about the situation around Iran. In consultations with the Trump administration — rather, in deference to the command from Washington — the E3 countries (Britain, France and Germany) who are the remaining western signatories of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal known as JCPOA, have initiated the process of triggering the so-called snapback mechanism with the aim to reimpose all U.N. sanctions against Iran on the plea that it has breached the terms of the ten-year old agreement. A joint statement issued in the three European capitals on Aug. 25 notified the U.N. Security Council that Tehran is “in significant non-performance of its commitments under the JCPOA” to give a 30-day notice “before the possible reestablishment of previously terminated United Nations Security Council resolutions.”

Washington Sanctions Palestinian Rights Groups For Aiding ICC

The US has imposed sanctions on three Palestinian human rights organizations that previously petitioned the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate Israel for war crimes in Gaza. “Today, the Trump Administration is sanctioning three NGOs – Al Haq, Al Mezan, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights – for assisting in the ICC's illegitimate actions against Israel. The United States will continue to protect our own sovereignty and the sovereignty of our allies from the ICC's overreach,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on Thursday evening on X. The announcement first appeared as a notice on the US Treasury Department's website on Thursday. In November 2023, the organizations requested that the ICC investigate Israel for war crimes in response to its actions in Gaza, including carrying out airstrikes on heavily populated civilian areas, imposing a complete siege to cut off food, water, and electricity to the civilian population, and causing the mass displacement of residents.

Kathmandu Declaration Of The IADL

The 19th Congress of the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) held in Kathmandu on the theme: “The Role of Democratic Lawyers in Promoting and Defending Peoples’ Rights, Peace and International Law in the Face of Fascism, Genocide, Militarization and Wars of Aggression” has been a vibrant forum for lawyers and jurists from around the world to come together in mutual understanding and collective work towards full implementation of the principles of the United Nations Charter. Together we reaffirm our commitment to work for a world with peace; without wars, conflicts, oppression or repression, poverty and hunger; and with full respect for justice, equality and human dignity. We reiterate our support for the creation of a just international economic order based on the interest of the whole people and not of the few.

Global Day Of Solidarity With Venezuela Against US Interventionism

The Global Day of Solidarity with Venezuela and for Peace in Latin America and the Caribbean was held in locations around the world. On Saturday, August 30, mass organizations, political parties, and social movements from various countries united under the slogan “Venezuela is not a threat, Venezuela is a hope” to express their support for Venezuela and peace in Latin America. The solidarity event comes in response to the recent interventionist actions and threats by the United States Government against the Venezuelan people and government, which include the deployment of military vessels in the Caribbean Sea as an excuse for intervention and destabilization, as well as the increase of a bounty on President Nicolás Maduro’s head, whom the US falsely accuses of association with drug trafficking.

Europe Just Made War With Iran More Likely

France, Germany, and the UK (E3) have announced they will trigger snapback sanctions on Iran at the United Nations. This will launch a 30-day process that will likely culminate in the full reinstatement of all U.N. sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal. The move will carry four major consequences. First, the U.N. Security Council will formally adopt the demand — pushed by Israel — that Iran cease all uranium enrichment. Israel designed this demand to sabotage nuclear diplomacy and edge the conflict toward war. Next, a U.N. arms embargo on Iran will return, potentially curbing Tehran’s ability to rebuild deterrence against future Israeli or American strikes, provided Russia and China treat the snapback as legitimate and enforce it.

What Do You Fear The Far Right Will Do That You Have Not Already Done?

On 12 August, Samar Abu Elouf, who won the 2025 World Press Photo of the Year for the picture above, posted on her Instagram account that her son’s close friend Sami Shukour had been killed while he ‘went to look for flour to feed himself and his family’. Samar had taken Sami’s graduation photographs just before the genocide began in October 2023. Sami’s family owns one of the most famous companies in Palestine, which made halawa with tahini. ‘Among the best in Gaza’, Samar wrote. Sami, she added, ‘was killed under a hail of bullets; the sound was very terrifying… We are not just numbers; each one of us is a story’. We have now entered the last quarter of 2025, the days galloping rapidly toward another year.

The Chris Hedges Report: Reporting On War

It is rare to find war correspondents who are willing to break the rules of access and safety imposed by dominant powers. Only by challenging these structures and facing the dangers of war can journalists begin a true effort to report the truth and, if they are lucky, materially alter the course of conflict. Journalist, author and documentary filmmaker Ben Anderson joins host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report to detail what it means to be a reporter who is committed to chasing and documenting the truth in a media landscape that often chooses complacency. Anderson chronicles his motivations and influences, such as the late John Pilger, early on in his career.
