Interfering In The Interference: Trump, WOLA And Honduran Elections

Trump’s surprise promise to pardon convicted drug trafficker and former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández on the eve of today’s Honduran presidential election, in combination with his directive to Hondurans earlier in the week that they vote for Hernández-allied candidate Nasry Asfura Zablah have interfered with the carefully planned interference already underway in Washington. While Trump prefers the brutish approach that succeeded in keeping his friend Milei in control in the recent Argentinian election, other Washington actors have long maintained a different approach to regime change of coordinated messaging between politicians and organizations across the political spectrum to give the appearance of an unbiased shared concern based in human rights and democracy.

On November 28, US President Donald Trump Trump declared he will be pardoning former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was sentenced to 45 years in a New York prison in 2024 for his role in helping smuggle 400 tons of cocaine into the US in a drug-running scheme linked to the Sinaloa cartel. Hernandez, Trump wrote, had been “treated very harshly and unfairly.” While Hernandez was President of Honduras, he initiated contracts worth over half a million dollars with Republican lobbying firm BGR Group, after his brother, Tony, was sentenced to life in prison for cocaine smuggling.

The Nobel Peace Prize was established in 1901. In the decades that followed, Mahatma Gandhi emerged as the international symbol of world peace for resistance to the dominant imperialism of his time – the British Empire. He was never recognized by the Nobel Committee. The Nobel Committee has honored figures ranging from the admirable Martin Luther King Jr. to the war criminal Henry Kissinger. Barack Obama received the prize after less than nine months in office, a “premature canonization” for not being George W. Bush. He then used his acceptance speech to justify US military invention.

Trump Attempts To ‘Close’ Venezuela’s Airspace With Imaginary Decree

In a bizarre social media post on Saturday, November 29, US President Donald Trump issued a warning amid escalating military action and pressure on Venezuela and President Nicolás Maduro: “To all airlines, pilots, drug dealers and human traffickers, please consider the airspace above and surrounding Venezuela to be closed in its entirety.” This unprecedented attempt at an air blockade is another step in the escalating aggression that Washington is carrying out against Venezuela. However, experts in international law emphasize that Trump does not have the authority to close the airspace of another sovereign country, as that power belongs solely to the state that exercises sovereignty over its territory or to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

European leaders are in panic mode. They are scrambling to ensure that Trump’s 28-point peace plan that they believe favours Russia can be revised to give Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky an equal say alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is delusional thinking. Whether or not Zelensky and his U.S./NATO allies, who have poured hundreds of billions of dollars into this conflict care to accept it, Russia is the indisputable victor in this terrible 14-year war, beginning with the 2014 Ukrainian civil war, which Russia entered in 2022. Moscow will call the shots when it finally ends. As in Potsdam at the end of WWII, the only path forward now is working out the terms of defeat.

After more than two years of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, popular outrage has mounted against the weapons manufacturers enabling the slaughter. The antiwar movement in the United States has begun targeting local nodes of the weapons supply chain in cities from Oakland to Brooklyn and Boston. These campaigns have deployed a breadth of strategies: pressuring local municipalities to divest, physically disrupting the supply chain through direct action, encouraging airports to adopt arms embargo policies and demanding public and private industrial landlords evict weapons companies.

The Ontario Federation Of Labour Adopts ‘Hot Cargo’ Resolution

The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) became the fourth Canadian labour federation to adopt a hot cargo resolution against Israeli goods last week. The resolution has the OFL declare trade relationships and services with Israel to be “hot cargo” that workers will not touch. “Hot cargo” is used to define goods that workers will not handle due to its association with exploitation or oppression. The New Brunswick Federation of Labour was the first to adopt a resolution supporting the boycott of Israel when it passed a resolution against handling weapons bound for Israel in May. Since then, three other provincial federations of labour have taken similar actions in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Ontario.

Milei Launches ‘Isaac Accords’ To Expand Israeli Influence

Argentinian President Javier Milei formally launched the Isaac Accords on 29 November, a new initiative aimed at strengthening political, economic, and cultural cooperation between Israel and Latin America. Milei announced the initiative following a meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who visited Buenos Aires on Saturday as part of a regional diplomatic tour. The Isaac Accords are being promoted in partnership with Washington and are modeled after the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab countries, including the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco.

More union Starbucks baristas are on ULP strike Friday, joining what has become the longest unfair labor practice (ULP) strike in Starbucks history. With the addition of hundreds of new union baristas from 26 new stores across nearly 20 new cities joining the picket lines, 2,500 baristas from 120+ stores across 85 cities are now engaged in the open-ended ULP strike that began on Red Cup Day, November 13 and expanded on November 20, to protest Starbucks’ historic union busting and failure to finalize a fair union contract.  “We’re joining the Red Cup Rebellion to fight for a better future at Starbucks that we all know is possible,” said Hailie Muro.

Italy is on general strike for the third time in less than three months, following a call by the grassroots union Unione Sindacale di Base (USB). Pickets, industrial actions, and demonstrations were organized in over 40 cities, with massive rallies demanding an end to rearmament plans and the war budget shaped by Giorgia Meloni’s government. On Friday, workers stressed that their mobilization is tied both to worsening material conditions at home and to international events, specifically the struggle of the Palestinian people – whose fate, they insist, is inseparable from Europe’s expanding war economy.

Black student unions have been a vital part of many Black college students’ lives for more than 60 years. But since 2024, Black student unions have lost their institutional support, campus space and funding with the rise of anti-diversity, equity and inclusion laws in Utah and Alabama. Black student unions now face a new wave of pressure, as more than 400 colleges and universities under the Trump administration have rebranded or eliminated programs and centers that promote diversity, equity and inclusion. Amy Lieberman, education editor at The Conversation U.S., spoke with Antar A. Tichavakunda, a scholar of race and higher education, to better understand what Black student unions are and how they influence Black students’ experiences in higher education.

New Yorkers Foil ICE Raid Before It Begins

For the second time in just over a month, a large-scale raid by dozens of immigration agents in New York City was met with a similarly large-scale counter-protest. This time, however, the protesters thwarted the authorities' plans before they began. Multiple arrests were made on Saturday during scuffles on the edge of Chinatown, during which hundreds of protesters faced off with federal agents, eventually supported by the New York Police Department (NYPD), as they prepared to launch a raid in the area. It comes just a month after a raid by 50 federal agents using military-style vehicles stormed nearby Canal Street in Lower Manhattan, and was met with a protest of hundreds in response.

Donald Trump made some revealing remarks to the media as he flew to Florida for Thanksgiving on Wednesday. Asked if he thought Ukraine is being asked to give too much land to Russia in his proposal to end the war, Trump responded: “It’s clearly up to the Russians. It’s moving in one direction. … That’s land that over the next couple of months might be gotten by Russia anyway. So, do you want to fight and loose another 50,000 or 60,000 people? Or do something now? They are negotiating; they are trying to get it done.” That’s the same realistic approach Trump’s new special envoy to Ukraine, U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, took with the Ukrainians and Europe’s so-called “coalition of the willing” during a visit to Kiev earlier this week.

Gaza ‘Stabilization Force’ Fails To Launch; Nations Unwilling To Commit

The White House is having difficulty launching its so-called Gaza International Stabilization Force (ISF), as countries that previously expressed willingness to deploy troops to the project now seek to distance themselves from it, according to a 29 November report in the Washington Post. The ISF “is struggling to get off the ground as countries considered likely to contribute soldiers have grown wary” over concerns their soldiers may be required to use force against Palestinians. Indonesia had stated it would send 20,000 peacekeeping troops. However, officials in Jakarta speaking with the US news outlet said they now plan to provide a much smaller contingent of about 1,200.

Solidarity movements with Palestine have made important gains in the past few months. Labour for Palestine reports that labour federations in Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador all recently passed Hot Cargo resolutions – making the cutting of all services and relationships with Israel including with the Israeli labour group, Histradut, union policy. The Jewish Faculty Network published The CIJA Report, a scathing indictment of the Centre for Israel and Jewish affairs (CIJA) for its anti-Palestinian Racism and genocide denial.
