Two Years Of Israel’s Genocide In Gaza

The world as we know it died two years ago today, on October 7, 2023 — but not, as we’ve been incessantly bludgeoned into believing, because Palestinian resistance fighters who broke out of the “open-air prison” of the Gaza Strip went on a killing spree in southern Israel in a desperate response to 75 years of persistent oppression, apartheid and murder by the State of Israel. Those attacks — horrific as they were, with 1,195 people killed and 251 others taken hostage (although it should be noted that no one knows how many were killed by Israeli forces themselves under the notorious Hannibal Directive) — were portrayed by Israel as a genocide, and as an existential threat to their very existence by sub-human monsters, but that was clearly untrue.

Power And Justice

Those were an eventful few days as the General Assembly convened at the United Nations Secretariat in New York Sept. 22. France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco and Andorra formally recognized the state of Palestine on the first day of the General Debate, Sept. 23. Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal had done so two days earlier. With Spain, New Zealand, Finland, Ireland, Norway and other nations also recognizing, virtually the whole of the Western bloc except the United States now accepts Palestine as a sovereign state. The imperium fades further into its corner. Always good. And eventful days have followed all the new endorsements of the sovereignty of the Palestinian people. President Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, presented a grandly titled Gaza Peace Plan at the White House on Monday, Sept. 29.

Bringing A Howitzer To A Knife Fight: US Armada Off Venezuela

Donald Trump boasted striking small boats off Venezuela’s Caribbean coast to “blow the cartel terrorists the hell out of the water.”  Claiming destruction of enough drugs to kill 25,000, he called the extrajudicial murders “an act of kindness.” Then he ominously hinted at a US land invasion of Venezuela now that the marine route for drugs had been obliterated. The Miami Herald described the “precision strike” as targeting the Tren de Aragua (TdA) criminal organization. Then, in the very next sentence, the newspaper lauded the strike at the “heart of Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles,” as if the two entities were one in the same. The rest of the article addressed the Cartel de los Soles, forgetting that it was TdA that had supposedly been blown out of the water.

Trump’s Blueprint To Crush The Left Draws From Decades Of Counterterrorism Policy

Five days after the murder of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, Vice President JD Vance hosted Kirk’s podcast from the White House. The Trump administration has never been particularly friendly to dissent, but since the killing of Kirk it has increasingly sought to lay blame for his death on their political opponents. While broadcasting from the White House, the vice president used the opportunity to rail against the left, promising to “dismantle the institutions that promote violence and terrorism in our own country.” Vance was joined by Stephen Miller who serves as the White House Deputy Chief of Staff as well as Trump’s Homeland Security Advisor. Miller pledged, “With God as my witness, we are going to use every resource we have at the Department of Justice, Homeland Security and throughout this government to identify, disrupt, eliminate and destroy this network and make America safe again for the American people.”

Charges Against Kilmar Abrego Garcia Appear ‘Vindictive,’ Judge Rules

A federal judge ruled last week that the U.S. government likely engaged in retaliatory prosecution against Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an immigrant who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration earlier this year. Waverly Crenshaw Jr., a federal judge based in Nashville, Tennessee, said in a 16-page order issued on Friday that there is a “realistic likelihood” that the human trafficking charges against Abrego Garcia were a “vindictive” action by the administration after he filed a successful lawsuit challenging his illegal deportation to El Salvador. For several weeks after Abrego Garcia was initially deported in March, the White House insisted that he was sent to a “super-prison” in El Salvador because of alleged ties to the MS-13 gang, bizarrely citing his tattoos and the types of hats he wore as supposed evidence.

Testimonies Reveal ‘Torture, Humiliation’ Of Flotilla Activists

Pro-Palestinian activists who were on board the Global Sumud Flotilla reported being mistreated by Israeli authorities following their arrest last week. One Spanish activist, Goretti Sarasibar, told Reuters after his deportation that the detainees were forced to watch videos of Hamas’s attack on 7 October 2023. “They didn’t give us food all day,” he said. “Now we are super happy eating, as we were starving.” Dutch activist Marco Tesh said he could not breathe at one point “because they put something to my face and they tied my hands to my back.” Another one of the deported activists, Rafael Borrego, said, “At any time that any of us called a police officer, we risked that seven or more fully armed people entered to our cell, as they did on mine, pointing us with weapons at our heads, with dogs ready to attack us, and being dragged to the floor.”

Intrigue And Confusion Reign Over Ukraine

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov came out of a meeting in New York on Sept. 24 with the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio showing a thumbs-up sign as he passed journalists. It was a confusing signal so soon after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly shamed the Russian military as a “paper tiger” and stunned European capitals by saying that Ukraine could still “fight and win” all its land. A charitable explanation could be that Trump was building the off ramp to hand the responsibility for Ukraine’s defence to the Europeans. He made a strong point that Europeans can and should do more. That said, it is also noticeable that Trump’s initial sympathy for Russia has given way steadily to a more neutral position — a shift that accelerated last month.

The True Face Of The White House Plan: More Money To Kill

The United States announced that it will allocate $1.8 billion to foreign aid projects with a political and strategic vision. According to a document sent to Congress, $400 million will go to Latin America, aimed at confronting the “regimes” of Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Cuba. The Trump administration’s plan seeks to redirect resources toward programs to curb the influence of governments labeled by Washington as “anti-American,” extending its reach to Europe and Greenland in order to “contain China’s advance in strategic sectors.” This narrow and unilateral vision, which prioritizes Washington’s economic and security interests, far from promoting international cooperation based on mutual respect and solidarity, is based on a logic of confrontation that jeopardizes regional and global stability.

The 13th Largest Army In World Is Unleashing Violence In Chicago

If the immigration enforcement apparatus of the United States were its own national military, it would be the 13th most heavily funded in the world. This puts it higher than the national militaries of Poland, Italy, Australia, Canada, Turkey and Spain — and just below Israel. That bloated force is due to a massive funding increase in President Donald Trump’s budget bill that went into effect October 1, and it comes as Chicagoland faces an escalation of violence from ICE and other federal agencies. Agents are tear gassing and beating protesters, raiding and ransacking communities across the area, and detaining people at homeless shelters and hospitals. They are roaming the city and surrounding suburbs in masks, sometimes in plain clothes and unmarked cars, and other times — especially near protests — in armored vehicles, wearing the militarized, camouflage uniforms that are the hallmark of soldiers.

The UN Is Failing To Protect Palestine Despite Demands To Take Action

Margaret Flowers: You left the United Nations on October 28th of 2023, the same month that Palestinians broke out of Gaza, which has been referred to as the world's largest open-air prison. Can you talk about how that impacted you and your decision to leave the United Nations? Craig Mokhiber: 2023 was a particularly disturbing year for the world and also for me. When this new government took control in Palestine and Israel in the beginning of 2023, it immediately announced that the gloves were off and that the country's policy of incremental genocide that had gone on for decades would be replaced with an expedited form of attacking Palestinians. In the spring, there was a violent upsurge in racially-based attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank, including full-scale pogroms in villages like Huwara, by Israeli settlers backed up by Israeli soldiers.

Trump ‘Peace Plan’ A Cynical Cover To Continue Palestinian Extermination

The psychopathology of the white supremacist colonial mindset renders colonial policy makers operating within that framework incapable of apprehending reality from the standpoint of the colonized.  The belief in a  Gaza “paradise” for the rich and famous, once Palestinians are paid to leave, or the idea that, after over seven hundred days of a war of extermination, where continued survival is, Palestinians would then surrender, can only be believed by individuals completely afflicted with this psychopathology. Yet, this is Trump’s 20 Point so-called peace plan, released on September 29th with indicted war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu at his side. It is a proposal with a core demand that Palestinian resistance completely surrender to occupation— and certain annihilation.

Israeli Authorities Have Beaten Greta Thunberg

Reports are emerging that Israeli authorities have abused activist Greta Thunberg while illegally holding her in detention. Greta Thunberg beaten by Israeli authorities On Saturday 4 October, the Israeli occupation authorities deported 137 of the kidnapped international solidarity activists who participated in the Global Sumud Flotilla to break the humanitarian siege on Gaza, in the second deportation operation in a matter of days, after returning four Italians to their country on Friday 3 October. One of the deported activists who arrived at Istanbul airport on Saturday recounted shocking details of what he described as ‘brutal assaults’ on some activists during their detention

Healthcare Takes Center Stage In Shutdown

The US government shut down at midnight on October 1 after Congress failed to approve new spending bills, forcing federal agencies nationwide to halt or scale back operations. At the heart of the shutdown is a standoff between Republican and Democratic Party politicians over healthcare. Over the summer, Republican lawmakers passed Donald Trump’s sweeping “Big Beautiful Bill” that makes deep cuts to public healthcare. Democrats argue that the Republican budget plan would weaken programs like Medicaid, the nation’s largest public health insurance program which covers over 70 million people. Democratic Party lawmakers demanded that protections for these programs be locked into a short-term spending bill, and when Republicans failed to deliver, lawmakers were unable to pass a funding bill to avoid a shutdown.

European Union Climate Breakdown

In the sharpest possible contrast to the US approach to climate change, in a very grown-up adult fashion, the EU has publicly stated: “EU officials warn climate breakdown and wildlife loss are ruining ecosystems that underpin the economy.” Whew!!! The world is still sane. Like a cool refreshing late afternoon breeze, a great sense of relief has spread across the Continent. With a remarkable pitch-perfect admission, the EU informs its citizens of the truth no matter how much it hurts. The upside to this admission is an understanding by the citizens that something horrible is wrong. Ipso facto, they must pull together to do something about it. Definitively, this pulls everybody into the mix to be aware, be prepared, make sacrifices, if necessary, to make it right.

Renewables Are A Global Economic Engine, Not A Culture War Threat

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith boasted in June that a private sector proponent for a new bitumen pipeline to British Columbia’s coast would come forward “within weeks.” Three months have passed and exactly zero companies have bet their own money to back up the pipeline hype constantly coming from Smith.  Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the first tranche of infrastructure projects to be fast tracked by the federal government, which also conspicuously included no bitumen pipelines. What gives? It is almost as if the oil industry does not share the giddy enthusiasm of the Alberta government for somehow doubling the province’s heavy oil production. Perhaps companies have been reading recent news, which has not been good for those still believing that oil prices and demand would justify billions in long-term investments.
