Strategic direct action and civil disobedience such as strikes, sit-ins and occupations can expose injustice, slow down or stop harmful practices and win specific demands. Below is an archive of articles covering resistance groups in the United States and internationally. If you are inspired by a campaign, perhaps you will join or support it. If you like the tactics being used, you can adapt them for your own struggle. Check out our Resources Page for links to tools that may be helpful in your resistance.
For several days, various Indigenous communities have been mobilizing and protesting in Paraguay against recent decisions of the right-wing government of Santiago Peña. Peña hails from the Colorado Party, one of the oldest parties in Latin America, which, incidentally, was the political base of the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989), one of the longest-serving dictators in 20th-century history.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of the president of Paraguayan Institute of Indigenous Affairs (INDI) and the restoration of the institution’s headquarters.
On October 3, it was announced that this Indigenous struggle in Paraguay had been successful. The leaders of the protests said, “Our heroic resistance has paid off.

n the past three months, citizens around the world have participated in dramatic challenges to the horrific Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza with over 66,000 known dead and at least a hundred thousand souls under the rubble, most of whom are women and children.
The genocide includes the destruction of virtually all food and food distribution systems, hospitals and clinics, schools and universities, water and sanitation facilities and a huge amount of the housing for 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza.
For the past 18 years, the Gaza Freedom Flotilla Coalition has used ships to attempt to carry citizens from all over the world to Gaza in a non-violent challenge to the genocidal violence of the Israeli government and the illegal Israeli naval blockade of Gaza.

Siargao seems like the most unlikely place where the ongoing genocide in Gaza might enter public discourse. A small island in the Philippines’ Mindanao region, it is best known as a top international surfing destination. It has a reputation for being laid-back, slow-paced, and largely tolerant of the influx of outsiders despite the rapid changes they have brought to island life. In the past several months, things have changed.
In mid-2024, as the genocide in Gaza intensified, a number of local Filipinos in Siargao began to show their support for a free Palestine in small ways. Some covered over Israeli stickers posted in public spaces with their own Free Palestine messages. Others talked about holding a protest event—a plan that fizzled out.

The video is shocking. The footage is low quality, shot from above and behind the scene: A group of people run from state security forces up an empty highway at full speed. Four people are carrying a limp body. But under the fire of gunshots, tear gas and police sirens, three of the people drop the body and flee. The other man, in a blue jacket, kneels beside the body, and holds onto him.
Two armored vehicles arrive, lights flashing. Two men in green fatigues, helmets and body gear jump out. They point their weapons, and begin to kick and beat the two men on the ground — one alive, though he would end up unconscious and hospitalized, one already dead. The latter’s name was Efraín Fuerez.

Protests broke out in various countries in Asia on Thursday, October 2, following the Israeli attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) on Wednesday and the abduction of hundreds of activists.
The GSF, consisting of over 40 ships with hundreds of activists onboard, was heading towards the besieged Palestinian territory of Gaza in order to break the Israeli siege and deliver crucial humanitarian aid to its people forced to starve by Israel.
The ships were attacked by the Israeli forces on the night of October 1, an attack which continued until October 3, when they were scores of miles away from the Gaza coast. Israeli forces abducted the activists and seized the aid the ships were carrying for the people of Gaza.

Hundreds of thousands flooded Italy’s streets on 3 October as part of a general strike organized to protest Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and the kidnapping of hundreds of activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla.
"After what I saw with the flotilla, I thought I couldn't just stand by and do nothing. It's the first time I go to these kind of demonstrations," Mario Mascetti told Reuters after attending the protest in Rome.
The CGIL and USB trade unions organized the demonstrations, which took place in more than 100 cities on the same day Israeli forces intercepted the last of the Global Sumud Flotilla vessels.
Organizers said the illegal seizure marked the capture of all 42 boats in the flotilla, each carrying humanitarian aid and international volunteers determined to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

A boat carrying dozens of international journalists and medical professionals from 25 countries has set sail for Gaza as part of the latest mission organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) to break Israel‘s illegal siege. The vessel, Conscience, bombed by Israel off the coast of Malta in May 2025, has returned to serve as a vehicle for medics and media determined to reach their colleagues in besieged Gaza.
For nearly two years, Israel has barred foreign journalists from entering Gaza, creating one of the most severe and sustained press blackouts in modern history. During this time, Israeli forces have targeted Palestinian journalists, killing over 270 and imprisoning countless more since October 2023.

Contact has been lost with all but two of the over 40 vessels participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla’s humanitarian mission to break the siege on Gaza, organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.
As of this writing, the flotilla’s live tracker showed that 19 vessels were presumed intercepted by Israeli marine forces in international waters, while an additional 21 were confirmed to be intercepted, and three were reported to still be sailing. One of them, the Mikono Al-Bireh vessel, appeared to be in Palestinian waters a few miles away from the coast of Gaza, while the Marinette appeared further away in international waters. Both have lost contact.
The flotilla’s “motherships,” which provide legal observation, appeared to have sailed north away from Gaza’s coast.

Day after day, Israel grows more and more audacious in its quest to impose its hegemony not only over the West Asia region, but also over the entire world, violating land, air, and international waters alike.
Hundreds of peaceful international activists aboard over 40 civilian vessels were subjected to a brutal act of piracy on the high seas, just 75 miles away from the Gaza coast. Their boats were loaded with life-saving humanitarian aid for the forcibly-starved two-million-person population in the Gaza Strip.
The activists were kidnapped and the ships were forcibly steered towards Israeli ports. Few governments took any action to prevent the mass abduction from happening. The interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla is a grave crime, which revealed that many Western countries are indifferent to the lives of their citizens when the offender is Israel.
These Tenants Are Going On Strike Against ‘Rent Debt’
Nine former tenants of Equity Residential, the nation’s fifth-largest apartment owner, announced this week that they’re going on a new kind of strike. According to the company, the former tenants still owe amounts ranging from $195 to more than $50,000 — but in order to spotlight what they say are predatory practices by corporate landlords, the tenants will collectively refuse to pay up.
For sisters Tay’Laur and Tai’Leah Paige, one missed rent payment triggered a chain of events that left them homeless and tens of thousands of dollars in debt.
Two years ago, when the Paige sisters came up short on rent for their North Hollywood apartment, they say Equity Residential moved rapidly to lock them out of their online payment portal and file for eviction.

Mediterranean Sea – After Israeli occupation naval forces illegally intercepted vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla —a peaceful, non-violent convoy carrying food, baby formula, medicine, and volunteers from 47 countries to Gaza—hundreds of participants have been abducted and reportedly taken aboard the large naval vessel, the MSC Johannesburg. This was after they were assaulted with water cannons, doused with skunk water, and had their communications systematically jammed in yet more acts of aggression against unarmed civilians.
Additionally, several boats were reportedly stopped by a chain-like barrier in international waters where Israel has no jurisdiction, just as they have no jurisdiction over Gaza’s waters and shoreline, compounding Israel’s continued war crimes and illegal blockade.

Hamas slammed the Israeli military’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which is carrying aid for Gaza, in a statement released on 2 October.
The statement called the interception “a treacherous attack and a crime of piracy and maritime terrorism against civilians.”
“It is a barbaric assault targeting international solidarity activists who were on an urgent humanitarian mission to deliver emergency aid to our besieged people in the Gaza Strip, who have been subjected for two years to genocide and systematic starvation,” Hamas added.
It also saluted “the courage of the free activists” and called on the UN and international community to hold Israel “accountable.”
Israeli naval forces moved to intercept the flotilla overnight as the boats were approaching the besieged strip.

As boats from the Global Sumud Flotilla prepared to set sail toward Gaza from the coasts of Italy, Spain, and Tunisia, a representative of Genoa’s Dockworkers’ Union (CALP), now part of Unione Sindacale di Base, declared that if anything happened to the flotilla, workers would “block everything.”
“Our young women and men must come back without a scratch,” the worker said at the port, before the flotilla ships departed. “And all this cargo, which belongs to the people and is going to the people, must reach its destination, down to the very last box.”
So when the flotilla was attacked on the night of September 8 while in Tunisian waters, the reaction was swift: Italian labor unions, led by Unione Sindacale di Base, called for a 24-hour general strike on September 22.

The escalating the political crisis in Madagascar appears to have reached its peak on September 29, when President Andry Rajoelina announced that he was dissolving the government, following days of mass protests largely led by young people, against chronic water and power outages.
The unrest began on September 25 in the capital, Antananarivo, as demonstrators took to the streets demanding reliable access to electricity and potable water, a fundamental challenge for many Malagasy households.
What began as largely peaceful marches soon degenerated as security forces intervened decisively. Tear gas was deployed, curfews imposed, and reports emerged of beatings, mass arrests, and even use of live ammunition.

A coalition of unions in the federal sector signed on to an extraordinary Federal Unionists Network letter September 29 urging the Democrats to fight Trump administration cuts, even at the price of a government shutdown. It was titled “No Bad Budget in Our Name,” and signers represent tens of thousands of federal workers.
Now that the shutdown has started, FUN is organizing a response among federal unionists, stating: “This is much more than a fight between branches of government or political parties. This government shutdown is a showdown between the public and the billionaires.”
“[They’re] using a shutdown as a threat to pressure Congress to pass a budget that impacts our most vulnerable, including seniors, rural communities, hungry children and cuts out access to healthcare for millions of Americans,” said FUN Co-Executive Director Alyssa Taft.
